You can tell heart went into this game, but it's not very good. The menu navigation is bizzare, the gameplay is very boring, and the soundtrack gets old quickly.

Looks like a quick whipped up cobbled together game. The player character behaves like a ball, but instantly stops once you let go of the movement. When trying to turn yourself around, this is very jarring. I need let go then move again to turn around instantly. If I did this like any other 3D game, momentum isn't preserved in the direction I was going but rather the direction I want to go.

So I previously Platinumed this game on PlayStation and have been following the games development a bit beforehand. I had a vague idea of what this game was going to be like before I started playing it. The game is a 3D platformer at its very core. You can float, jump and glide through hexagonal levels with the occasional button press for certain items. Controls do feel dated and floaty. There is also a lack of controller support so be warned. The game doesn't offer a lot of varied content but thrives in delivering an incredibly chill and worry free experience. The game has a Neon drenched world made up of hexagonal environments that are reminiscent of Tron or Electroplankton. The point of the game is to bring life to dead colorless worlds using your staff and drums. The game is around 2-3 hours long and includes a few different worlds with a couple of levels in them. that mostly just change the color palette of the environment. The game never does anything more than offer basic hexagonal environment with a little bit of foliage. The game is incredibly cheap price wise and has colorful visuals and relaxing music that are dynamic and open up the more you explore the levels. If you have a couple dollars to spare I would definitely recommend buying this game even it is a simple game. Turning a bland environment with mute colors into a fantastic and colorful wonderland is a simple joy that will keep you playing.

Newt One is awesome! It is certainly off the beaten track in terms of what you would expect from a 3D platformer, but that is kind of the point. At first glance, you would read the words "non-violent" and quickly discard the relevance of it, but as a parent to a younger guy, I completely appreciate Newt One and its Developers focus on this. It is no small thing to compete in the video game world and design a game that makes this center to its design. I would imagine it is so much harder to make something non-violent but still is engaging, which I think Newt One achieves. Overall, we (my little guy and me) are only a little ways into it, but we are having a blast! The music is spectacular and it's plain to see a lot of intentionality here as well. Subtle things like the music picking up as you awaken more and more of the world. The whole thing is a sublime, relaxed experience that focuses on the great parts of what makes games fun.

One level complete, but between the lack of controller support (the 3D platforming equivalent of crimes against humanity) and absolutely ATROCIOUS movement physics akin to greasing a lead brick and letting it bounce around the nearest wooden floor, I can already tell this will be a miserable time. A mega bummer considering the beautifully saccharine, Japanese-inspired aesthetic, especially since it gives me Iglooghost cover art vibes (i.e. Neo Wax Bloom), but unlike Seamus and his phenomenal music, there's no polish or complexity to be had.

Time Note: The game took me about 3hours to 100%. Cute, non-combat, 3D platformer where you play as Newt who has to restore color to the world. It really is a lot of fun at it's very core. The levels are fun and some of them really show the developers understanding of what a platformer should be. The game respects your time as a player. The music is wonderful yet simple. Each zone has it's own track that plays, but it plays for the all the levels in that zone. However the track doesn't get old. The music is quite enjoyable to consistently listen to while you go through the levels. The game is not without issue. There are some areas that will cause frame drops because of the moving platformers. Game is still perfectly playable, it just can be abit ugly to look at. The controls also are in need of optimization. However, it's nuanced. You can still play the game without having to put much thought in to 'getting used' to the controls. The story ultimately isn't there, but that's ok. The small story they added is something cute and simple. The overall design and build of the game really exceeds expectations. This allows the story to understandably not be the main focus. Overall the game delivers on what you'd expect from an indie, 3D platformer. I'd love to see this world expanded on.

This game DOES NOT support controllers at all, despite advertising as full controller support. I need controller support for accessibility reasons so I was not able to play at all. (Note the play time is inflated by trying to fix the issue / forgetting to close the game window )

Lies about having controller support and slippery movement. Really like the look of the game and the music theme but its just not fun in the slightest.

Sadly, Newt One just doesn't have enough content, polish, or really even strong enough game elements for me to recommend. Yes, it has a bit of charm, but I think it's all 'feels', really. I like the idea of what is being pushed, but when it comes down to brass tacks - it really isn't all that engaging or fun to play. Essentially, this is a 3D platformer with linear levels. The levels can feel sandboxy and open at times, but there is more-or-less a path you have to take to get to the end. There are no penalties for anything; you can fall off ledges all you want. We have four worlds and apparently less than five hours of content. The music and artwork are good but both aspect suffer from not having near enough diversity. By the time I was finishing the first world - I was sick of the music. World two was more of the same with slightly different colors and slightly different music. Now I don't want to simply complain about things without offering potential solutions. I do know the Early Access campaign is quite short for this, so I also understand that some of these suggestions are probably unreasonable. First thing I'd do is get rid of that sterile world completion % meter. This game feels like a fairy tale and that thing breaks the immersion. Why not show world completion graphically? Like, have a frame slowly build around the screen to show completion. Maybe make it look like stained glass or whatever. I think the lack of a walking/moving animation can cheapen the experience at times, so I'd maybe work on that part a bit. I also often wonder if a subtle screen filter would make it feel a bit more storybook, instead of hard-edged polygons. Just food for thought. I think it's a bit silly to have a 3D platformer that only has a few hours of playtime. You've done the heavy lifting with building the foundation, so why not add in heavy collection elements? Also, there really should be some penalty for failing. You can always have an optional 'free mode' for children or whatever. Finally, I'd put more effort in trying to make the worlds more different. You could do this structurally or graphically, or both. Pros: +It's cute +While repetitive, the music and artwork are nice Cons: -This is really an Itch-level game, and I think the price-point and that whole list of awards is going to give some misleading impressions -The base idea and game are okay, but this really could be expanded upon in nearly every aspect -No penalty for death doesn't really work for this kind of game in my opinion -The worlds don't feel different enough -Other than the initial experience of exploring a new kind of game, this just doesn't keep me interested Unfortunately this is a hard pass for me. I do wish the developers the best of luck with this, and any future projects.
