Within minutes it had me screaming and swearing and biting my hands. Still, the protagonist is cute.

Overall Rating: 5.5/10 Gameplay: 6/10 • A platformer game similar to "Getting Over It" and "Golfing Over It." • Overall has simple mouse controls but includes numerous physics-related technical skills found through the player's creativity. Graphics: 5/10 • Simple character and simple backgrounds. • A small map in the complete sense, with easter eggs throughout the map. Price: 9/10 • For $2.99, the game does well in the time to price ratio. • The game goes on 50% - 80% sale once every 3-6 months. Difficulty: Harsh • Precise hand-eye coordination is required for the game. • A general knowledge of the map is needed to be to progress. • In the "About this Game" section, the developer mentions that he does not take responsibility for mental suffering. Computer Requirements: • The game runs well even on a low-end computer. No noticeable framerate differences between an I3-7100 and an I7-7700K. Playtime: • Expect around 30 min to 8 hours of gameplay depending on hand-eye coordination. Edit: Formatting.

Ria's Hook is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This one eschews the garbage pixel "art" that goes hand in hand with the thousands of amateur made platformers infesting Steam for some hand drawn art, and it's true anything is better than pixelcrap, but it's still not a winner there. Since the graphics are a fail, that leaves gameplay to try make up the difference, and it doesn't. This Korean made platformer focuses on a hook swing mechanism, and hook swing mechanisms are not what was needed to revive the old, dead, obsolete platformer genre. I'd just like to point out 3D graphics hit mainstream in the late 1990's and 2D graphics never, ever had a comeback, so it's unclear why amateur developers haven't gotten the memo. Anyway, deficient graphics, deficient gameplay. Let's go into a bit more depth on the technical defects. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game is comprised of somewhat mediocre hand drawn 2D illustrations instead of professional looking 3D game assets. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can create graphical assets properly, or lack of talent. Regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is very low, beneath what PC gamers have come to expect in this era of cutting edge photorealistic 3D graphics. At least it's not pixel "art", but if you're looking for contemporary, immersive visuals, this game is a fail. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The controls and game handling are notably very floaty and imprecise. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing or polish done. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. This looks a lot like it was designed for consoles, but released on Steam instead by mistake. While this is on PC, it has all the hallmarks and deficiencies of a console game, from the clunkier than needed control scheme to the less than cutting edge graphics. There's 10's of thousands of PC games on Steam, and PC gamers deserve only the best. This might not appeal to many gamers due to the lack of PC-centric design. It's unclear why this never made it to the video game console appliances it seems to have been designed for. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The game never really caught on with the millions of gamers on Steam, with a very low peak player count close to launch, and then just a handful of players launching this game every couple of days. This is undoubtedly caused by factors such as those raised in this review. It's always helpful with buying decisions to consider how popular and successful the product is, and unfortunately while this did accumulate a few participation trophy reviews, overall, people just aren't using it. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Ria's Hook is relatively cheap at $3 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.

For who wants to play this game: Do not play this game, the difficulty curve is actually not ethical. There are huge amounts of RNG in the very last portion of the map. You cannot dodge it at with mechanical skills, and since it's at the very last portion of the game it just feeds you with depression. I believe it's waste of time, effort and money to buy this game and play. Reason why I'm writing this is because I had to beat this because of a bet. I would never, ever recommend this game to a friend even if I want him to suffer, there are plenty of other games to recommend.

A pleasant and relaxing game. I thorougly enjoyed the wonderful and whimsical artstyle that reflected the soothing gameplay that I found myself going back to the beginning to enjoy the game assets one more time. The controls were well designed and finely tuned. I found myself swinging on the same vines repeatedly just for the fun of the swinging because of how exciting it was! For the low cost of 2.6 USD, I found myself enjoying this game for an extended amount of time, coming back to the game over and over because of the exciting gameplay. The ending was extremely charming too, and it was a fitting end to such a great story. Overall, a well designed and fun game to spend time on whenever you have some free time. I highly recommend it. Yep yep!
