I had extremely low expectations, and this game only slightly disappointed. What I admire most about "Super Sonic Racer" is how much it will never, ever be Mario Kart and yet how much it doesn't seem to care and just exists. Why does this game exist? I don't know. There are only eight tracks and eight levels that are the tracks reversed. I really like the graphics and the characters are funny. Not "Haha" funny but "why does this exist?" funny.
The human characters are creepier looking than the alien characters. There is a taxi driver character named "Otaxia." He's not an alien, he just has a strange name with the word "taxi" in it. There's also an alien named Boter'd. Why is his name Boter'd? I don't know.
The vehicles all seem to handle differently but there's no statistical differences listed. Some are fast and some are just awful. You want to get the lead early and hold it since enemies in this game seem to be default slower than the player. You also get a boost and can pick up powerups, but since you're going to want to be in first the powerups are pretty useless. You just want to get the boost powerup and dump the rest. You need to get first in every race to unlock the next set of races, which is extremely easy.
I 100% completed this game in 51 minutes and it is probably not because I am extremely skilled but rather that this game is pretty indifferent to the player losing. The game puts checkpoints all over, as though it's trying to squirt dopamine into the player's brain to keep him engaged so he doesn't shut it off. Who would play as Boter'd or Otaxia if this game was frustrating? Even if you miss the checkpoint, you still respawn next to where you died, making the checkpoints completely useless. You can even press "R" to respawn if any enemy hits you and sometimes just jump ahead of him and keep going.
There is no multiplayer, which is unfortunate, because I wanted to share my love of "Super Sonic Racer" with the world, but at least as a solo experience I can say it's 51 minutes of my life I am never getting back, nor do I want to, because this game is- well, not a hidden gem. It's not a diamond in the rough, it's argonite in the rough, or cubic zirconia, in the rough.
