A game with very slow and clumsy gameplay, dynamics, and movements. It seems like the details for smooth gameplay and player learning weren’t properly refined.

Wait for a sale. There is nothing special about this game. Every single part of it is adequate and nothing is great. Few guns, minimal physics, minimal crafting, minimal features, small maps, very few enemies. It is plain in almost every way.

Atomfall is a compelling new game by Rebellion, the same developers of the Sniper series. Set in a alternate history, it presents an \fictionalized version of the Windscale nuclear disaster that devastated northern England in 1957, and that serves as the backdrop five years later; Its contamination zone encompasses the nuclear site, a nearby village, and the surrounding farmland. Atomfall’s story is interesting, but also, its side mysteries are the real mystery that compell my attention. Collectible documents that desire my attention. There was also a desire to figure out a murder of a vicar’s employee, or help a miner. There is even a group of people who clale themselves Druids that want me to help them. I got to infiltrate a castle and steal stuff, and help their faction, so I felt like I was in some 1960s Robin Hood simulator. That was honestly interesting, and yet, it is part of the world building. I found myself distracted from the main quest. I daresay, the real main quest are the village residents that do need my time and attention. In the end, I do appreciate the fact that, the stories feel intertwined. There are a lot to do in this open world, and it is made easier by the various hints presented. The map was useful as it allows me to use GPS coordinates to find things via marker, instead of some intrusive pointer. That is credible for me. Everything in the game is refined by the Britishness. There is a sense of serenity and quaint feeling while looking at the English town, and charm, while the rolling h ills stand there, waiting for exploration, despite the circumstances. There was even a cheeky reference to Doctor Who; I saw the outline of a blue Box typical of the series in the distance, but any attempt for me to reach it resulted its disappearance. The minimal HUD, is cool with The expansion pack added some fun and a whole new place to deal with content, and a good expansion to the existing story. To a degree, I’m moderately surprised it was released this fast, since it is only 2.5 months after release; I did think it would come bit late,r but I guess they already had it in mind so they just worked on it before the official release date. With all of that out of the way, I have to say a few words about things that stood out ot me. 1. The game had a conflicting vision. What does it want to do? Or see itself. It presents itself as multiple genres and yet it feels like it fulfilled them, barely. It could have leaned into one genre a bit more and make it obvious. 2. That causes the game to feel a bit barren. 3. Ammunition feels scarce, and a few times, I had to spend a chunk of time searching for time more than actually work on the quests. That was a poor thing that needs refinement. 4. Why is there a launcher? All it does is to advertise its offical merchandise, and the official comic series. Someday, it can be removed and there would be no loss at all. But for now, I guess we have to live with it. 5. The weapons themselves are decent but the entire system needs rework. 6. Stealth feels like it needs some work and polish. A few other words. Rebellion did a good job making this game, and had called it profitable. They had made it that way even when the game was a Day 1 release on Gamepass. I had a good time overall. If the series do feel a bit like Fallout, I can see fair comparisons, and I think I agree. Not a bad way, but still in a tribute way to the game wrapped around a British setting. I do think there is room for more content, and possibly another game in the “Atomfall” name. Maybe it can be an inspiration after another one? So here is my verdict. Score: 70% for the positives and negatives. It has its but also presents a story very well. Recommendation: yes. It is truly a mid game. Achievements: 25 hours if you go for all the achievements. Another 5-10 if you go for the DLC achievements. Replay value: partial since some of the endings ask for multiple playwrights.

This is barely a recommened. 6.5 probably of 10. The reality is Fallout 3 or 4 is overall a better game for sheer game mechanics. This game looks pretty good, when it loads properly, I came across a lot of bad textures and in some cases things which had no texture applied and were still a exposed base model. I don't know if this was poor coding or texture work though as sometimes after reloading the game these instances would correct seemingly. When everything lines up, there are some beautiful vista in this game with the crashing of colors, this game brings vibrant and washed out together in a interesting combination of sickness/life kind of tonality. Audio is fine, I heard not crackling or any bad dialogue. The voice acting is fine as well, no stellar performances but you dislike the characters you're supposed to and can kind of empathize with others. The only annoying thing here is the voice on the phone, it's such a cheesy 'mystery' thing, a ominous voice calling random pay phones that gives you instructions. Combat feels ok, for me this came down to a pistol, rifle and shotgun with a as needed 4th weapon. Early on the game is a lot of melee combat, which is very basic and offers no flipping block or dodge capacity, so you pretty much just beat each other like cavemen til someone falls over. Ranged combat is better, mostly. Weapons feel somewhat different, there are only a handful of weapons available in the game and those few weapons can be upgraded twice to a stock and then pristine quality. I didn't find everything useful, particularly SMGs, they feel weak, inaccurate and lack any real punch. You'd think this would be offset by providing lots of ammo or some thing to make shooting it 'cheap' resource wise, but no, it's just a weapon to use when your other ammo is low and you happen to have a SMG on hand. Where combat utterly fails is enemy AI, specifically the enemy range combat. ALL residents of the island apparently completed sniper school and were olympic throwers of some kind because enemies are surprisingly accurate with firearms and DO. NOT. MISS. with thrown explosives like hand grenades or molotovs. This become comical after awhile and absolute tedium later on. Enemies have no limit to the number of explosive they can toss if they can toss them, so if you find a good place to attack from and hold your ground in some instances they just begin infinite pummeling the spot with dead on throws, they're not even off by an inch they will hit you straight in the face every time. When you see an enemy begin to throw your only options are to shoot them immediately or run away as they can turn their throw like a laser guided missle but apparently cannot adjust for distance, away. Be careful because closing the distance does not work. The hundreds of times I had to quick load back to my last quick save because I'm was in some fire fight and out of no where a molotov lands right in my face because some melee enemy got under my position and perfectly tossed it up 40 feet straight up through a 2 foot gap at an angle to nail me directly... I just... ugh I'm getting angry just thinking about it. Beyond that this game does have stealth, kind of. You can instant kill enemies from behind but for some reason it makes a lot of noise and attracts enemies until you get a skill to offset that. Add to that this is one of those games with stealth where enemies have the oddest habit of breaking their routine randomly when you're sneaking up behind them... huh. *eye roll* What makes it really silly is sneaking up on enemies is only really useful for awhile before firearms become the primary mode of combat. Once you have a rifle it is MUCH more effective to pick enemies off from long distances with headshots than trying to stealth as funneling enemies at you and picking them off is far safer. The story is decent. Science experiment turned accident that resulted in a quarantine from people turning into zombies of a sort. What's interesting here is the game actually has multiple endings with multiple characters. From what i can tell your choices don't have a profound impact on the game world its self but strictly on the ending cut scene you get and where you need to go to escape. It all falls apart under a handful of silly things. 1- the combat issue mentioned above. You just don't understand how f**king stupid it is, you can be at the to of a 50 foot stair case shooting down at enemies and they are just super bowl quarter backing grenades and molotovs at insane angles and distances. 2- The god d**n inventory! Who the hell thought 12 item slots and 4 big item slots was a good idea? So things are basically 1 handed or 2 handed and you can carry 12 one handed items and four 2 handed items. Mind you each healing item, grenade, buff potion and quest item is a 1 handed item and nothing in this game stacks. So if you want 2 bandages you have to give up 2 of your 12 slots. I read when this came out about how you have to break your Fallout urge to grab everything, thats a joke. You will have to simply give up having an interest in the game world. It completely defeats the notion of exploring things because you can't carry anything. My first play through, trying to do all the quests and talk to all the people, was 20 hours. The first half was me exploring and trying to find cool stuff, the 2nd half was me just running through everything because I had given up inventory management entirely and just figured f**k it. This became quite frustrating with ammo as you cannot make ammo, you can only find it. And you can only carry a handful of any given ammo type except for arrows which you can carry a lot of for some reason. Ultimately this game could have been a LOT better with just a few minor adjustments to the base mechanics. If enemies were fallible in throwing things. A way to upgrade your inventory carry size. FAST TRAVEL. There is NO fast travel. By the end of the gaming I was having to run back and forth across Crestfall ( one of 3 main world maps) repeatedly on fetch quests. It was purely a time suck as in a lot of cases I was going to quickly enemies weren't even respawning, remember I said by the end I was running through everything. I was perplexed by some of the 'hidden' areas. There are multiple instances where I found a small space to crawl through or opening in a wall to squeeze through < this kind of movement comes with it's own animation, is a special kind of movement enemies can't follow you through. The areas many times would be unique and feel like a secret or hidden area, only to be void of any content. Just a few trash items, not even ammo usually. Atomfall feels like someone was inspired by Fallout and had a great story to tell and great ideas, but really made this for themselves without a lot of consideration of a broader audience. There are frustrations here which Fallout 3 didn't have for inventory. The weapon list is lackluster and what there is isn't even all useful. Oh, upgrading weapons? you don't get that ability for a LONG time, way longer than it should be. Upgrading requires 2 copies of the gun at the same quality level, when you combine them they turn into the weapon of the next quality level. Not a bad system except I found a couple weapons to be very rare. You also can't upgrade the bow which feels like a big miss in opportunity. You can't make ammo at all, not even arrows and merchants rarely have much if any ammo either. You can't block or dodge melee combat. Oh there is a vague questing system that doesn't really explain what you're supposed to do or where things are, it isn't the worst quest system I've seen though. I paid $40 USD for this and feel like I paid $10 too much.

Great AA game with a lot of immersive storytelling, light RPG and survival mechanics and a focus on exploring/finding out what happened. It doesn't overstay its welcome with around 20 hours to complete. The characters and locations are mostly interesting, although you also won't be too surprised about the "big mystery" if you've played other games with a post apocalyptic setting. With a lot of choices and freedom about when and how to approach story moments no playthrough will be the same. Also you can hit people with a cricket bat.

What would otherwise be a interesting game is ruined by a god awful inventory system that makes exploration a detriment rather than something enjoyable. This is not Fallout but in the UK. This is an attempt by someone who has never played an rpg to make one. Ignore this game like the plague.

Enjoying it so far, but I think people describing it as "British Fallout" may have hindered it. I think a closer description would be like if The Forest was more ImSim and less Open World Survival Craft.
Its a good game, but.....
Atomfall took me around 16 hours to finish all of the quests and complete one of the endings.
Pros
- Beautiful world - Satisfying gameplay - Good story - Strong lore and world building - Fun mechanics
The electric puzzles and barter system were surprisingly good
- No bugs, crashes or performance issues on a good PC
Cons
The main Con for me was that game never decided what type of game it actually was but at no point did it ever commit to being any one type of game. There are moments where if you squint your eyes enough there was a resemblance to Stalker, Fallout, Bioshock, The Forest even The Last of Us. I am aware that is a very strong list of games but Atomfall in my opinion was so close to being great rather than good. With a little more polishing this could be easily rectified for example:
have an upgrade path for a bigger inventory

expand the weapon customisation

have gear/armour

fix the stash system so its a bit more user friendly and maybe also expandable
Small improvements that would have gone a long way include: - having a slightly bigger and more spread out world, - having a single map (like stalker) rather than levels, - Overhauling the UI to make the quests more obvious, - the AI is average, - the number of quests/characters could have been enhanced - the crafting system seemed to be underpowered.
Should you buy it
Buy it if you want a beautiful looking 10 to 15 hour experience BUT get it on offer. Atomfall is a solid 7/10 game but the jump to 8 or 9 out of 10 would require it to really decide what type of game it is. I hope that rebellion follows it up with a sequel as the premise and setting is really intriguing.

Not great, not terrible. There is charm; there is radiation; there are rats. You will admire the beautiful countryside; you will chuckle over the accents of the villagers; you will bemoan the lack of inventory space. The game has weapons; the game has questionable design choices; the game has a decent story. Would I recommend it? Eh. Depends on what you are looking for in a game. It is not Fallout; it is not really an RPG; it is not that immersive. Why does only one kind of short grass hide me? What is wrong with fast travel? What is wrong with having currency? Is the game really a subtle critique of the Pound sterling? I would compare it to Outward—also an interesting game that is ultimately limited by its undeveloped and Spartan game choices and design.
