I remember playing this game as a child on my fathers old Dos Computer and I have to say I understood more about this game back then than I do now. I can't figure out the controls, there's no real guids on the internet. And all I can do is die. Actually the only button I know is F2 reloads to the previous savepoint. THAT'S the only button I know!!!! UPDATE: I had to follow a guide to find a guide to the game and guess what? I didn't learn ANYTHING!!! 100/10 Life is meaningless!

This is not a port of Drakkhen, it is emulated PC version and bundled with DosBox.
Drakkhen is a great game, if you've only played the snes version you owe it to yourself to try out the original version, but don't get this one. I recommend getting the Amiga version and play it via emulator. You can still find copies for pretty cheap on ebay.
I was hoping Infogrames had put in just a little effort with this release. This is beyond lazy. They should have taken the soundtrack from the snes version and melded it with the Amiga version of the game, enhance the palette and sprite work and release it as a proper modern PC port.
I would have paid $20 for that. Charging $5 for this is ridiculous. Even on a sale it's not worth it. Emulated games should not be allowed on Steam.

This game is just too hard, and not in a good way.
The enemies in the dungeons are just BRUTAL. I'm only in the second dungeon in the story and every enemy I encounter kills me even though all my characters are level 6 or 7. To level up much further would take an immense amount of grinding, and I've already done quite a bit. I also have all the best gear the merchant is selling and it still isn't making much of a difference.
There's so many enemies even in the second area of the game that just pop up and seem invincible and/or do crazy amounts of damage.
The game just seems broken and untested.
The SNES version was obtuse and weird and brutal, but it's totally reasonable compared to this game. Play that instead. The music is better, the systems are simplified, and it doesn't have the stupid runic magic writing that requires a guidebook no one has ever owned in order to understand what the spells do.

If you like old school RPG challenges, this one's for you. I remembered playing this as a kid and had no clue what I was doing. Get ready to write important quest info down and memorize hot keys for spells! The challenge is fun though, and there are countless hours of gameplay for those with the "grapes" to classic game.

This is not the SNES one you remember. It plays in a DOSBox, it has no controller support, it has no instructions, the controls are impossible, the map from the SNES version doesn't exist, there's no compass to tell which direction you're going, nothing. Enemies will reappear in rooms constantly without any warning that there are even enemies going to be appearing in some cases, they just show up, wipe your party and you're done. You can't save inside of the palaces and you only heal over time outside so you better find a nearby building to stand at the entrance of for a couple of days to heal up before doing a LOT of grinding to make progress even walking around.

DosBox version of Drakkhen. VGA graphcis options included.
I used to play this on the Tandy back in the 80s.
My only complaint is that the speed of the emulation is so much faster then normal, battle speed is insane.
Back in the day it was a little slower, and gave you time to be strategic and select spells, and move characters to correct positions. Now is just let them slash at each other, and hope you win.

Got this cause I grew up with the SNES version & one of the rare people that actually enjoyed it. Loved the story; so when I found out that the SNES story was lost in translation to the original I wanted to pick this up.
If your experience with this game is the SNES version though then I **highly** looking up the manual of the DOS version cause unlike the SNES version this game straight out throws you in the action right away, no backstory or controls explanation (And it's not simplified at all)
Also there's some changes from the SNES version, like the instakill shark in Hordkhen's castle is present from the start (Also he'll kill you right away if you pester him too much)
If you hated the SNES version odds are you probably won't like this one (it's much easier to die in this one too).
If you never played this game & have no nostalgia for it then proceed with caution - this is one of those old games that hasn't aged too well.
(Also ctrl + F11/F12 adjust emulation speed; game runs too fast by default)

Drakkhen is an action RPG that was first released in 1989 and to date is still one of the most innovative action RPGs I have played – no other action RPG I have played has been able to truly replicate the experience you will get while playing through this game. The game isn’t without its share of faults (enemies massively out level your party at times, there’s no overworld map, there is no way to rest and restore HP/MP so you will have to stand around passively for it to regenerate, the spells and phials in the game are only listed by symbols and not names so you’ll have no idea what they do at first) but despite its shortcomings the challenge Drakkhen presents and the satisfaction you get when you fully complete the game make it worth seeing the game through until the end.

Do you like SUFFERING? Do you like a world so harsh, even the STARS are out to get you? This is the game for you.
It's the DOS version in a DOSBox wrapper. This isn't a modern port or remaster, but the original game with the original cheats and (probably) bugs. All the screenshots are in EGA(16 cols) but you can select VGA at startup for a much better looking gameplay experience.
If you wanted a way to play this legally, then I'd say this is worth the ~$5 you'd be paying for it.
I'd recommend you look for the manuals online, specifically the one with the spell information in it, so you know what you're casting.
There are maps out there, but they are not for this version, and are inaccurate due to differences between versions.
