I've known Mazetools Soniface since it was released, I heard about it somewhere and immediately downloaded the free version for my Android phone, it also reminded me of the Reactable I saw in Barcelona. The Reactable caused quite a stir in the experimental electronic scene a few years ago, Björk had presented and used the instrument for the first time on her world tour in 2007 and many were like: “woah what is that??” Some time later a mobile version of it followed, which of course I also checked out. But this is not about comparing these two things, at least there is no obvious reason for me to do so, so let's go back to Soniface. This trippy-looking gridsynth sequencer was for quite some time, one of my most used apps besides the game Doofus Drop and Stop Motion Studio, even if it took me a while at first getting the grips with it and also to get used to operating on that small screen. By the way, I'm actually not a big fan of touchscreen things, I don't know what it is but somehow I don't like it, same thing when I started working with the MPC Live, but that's another topic.
There is a certain park in Berlin where on Sundays when the weather is good, you think you are at a small festival, lots of street musicians take turns playing, we have or had a very popular and well-known basketball court there and a permitted wall for graffiti, thousands of people having a good time in different ways but there is music all over the place. One day a friend from Denmark got in touch and said he was visiting berlin and wanted to do something special, since i knew he was also a musician and a synthesizer enthusiast, we decided to play a spontaneous session there at the Mauerpark. I told him to download Soniface (which he actually didn't know) and practice a bit while I organize everything else. We improvised some drum and bass with only 2 Soniface and I also had a portable scratch turntable with me, for about 60 minutes and people went crazy. Although we hadn't laid out a hat we ended up with over 50 € and some weed and a few bottles of beer, and what I mean by that is if you know what you're doing you can have a really good time with it.
A while ago I bought this version here on Steam which I also like much more, I don't have to work with a touchscreen and I can use my second screen for the visuals, so if you are interessted in geeky sequencing and funky loop recordings with a bizarre and unusual looking interface, then you should dive into Mazetools. The devs are also constantly working on improving the software and working on new tools, once had a little chat with Jakob and it was a very nice and interesting
conversation. Now I'm looking forward to Mazetools Botany and Modyssey but also hope for the option to use it without VR ; ))
