Info
Leisure Suit Larry 5 is the "spiritual" sequel to LSL3. I say spiritual as this game is basically unrelated beyond having Patti and minor mentions of the island in that game.
Overall opinion
LSL 5 is my 4th LSL game (4 doesn't actually exist) - and I have to say it's by far the most boring so far. LSL 2 was painful, but this one legitimately offers no brain teasers, no laughs, and no actual feel of tension. Whilst the previous games are notorious for their difficulty and complex design, this one is a 1 dimensional point and click game where you repeat the same actions in a monotonous padding-fest that feels like it's actively trying to keep you from finishing it by means of pure boredom. I didn't encounter a single death screen, softlocks were unclear and mostly felt like glitches, and the copyright protection is by far the worst in the series so far.
The writing was extremely poor for an LSL game and I hope the next one offers more quality, because this game was just a multi hour rant about how Patti is a "tramp" and how Larry is a sex offender. The entire game is focused on Larry taping women without their consent to produce some "quality content" for his employer. Meanwhile Patti is working for the FBI and constantly getting into promiscuous situations (oftentimes of her own volition). Larry constantly dreams about Patti whilst on plane rides, meanwhile Patti constantly dreams of various other men - clearly going against the ending of LSL 3...
The ending felt glued on and didn't really add much either... Overall this game feels like it was made by an entirely different studio due to these collective things, and clearly doesn't hit the mark anymore.
Mechanically this game plays exactly like LSL 1's VGA remake. That's not necessarily a good thing however... The control scheme is incredibly sluggish and annoying to use - having you right click to change control type, or select from the hotbar on top. Oftentimes this makes progressing annoying as you need to constantly click to get the right icon, or move your cursor away from the objective. The phone dialing numpad is also reversed, making it incredibly confusing for the copyright protection. The camera (an integral part of the game) is mentioned to have a very short battery life and thus needs charging "after every use". In reality I didn't have to charge it, and doing so softlocked me as I couldn't unplug it. This didn't end in a death screen so it might be a bug, but I can't know for certain. There's also no combining items or thinking outside the box, so you're essentially just picking up item A to use on objective B. Overall a slog and not entertaining.
tldr;
Unrelated plot, horrible writing.
Should you buy it?
No.
