Trials of the Gauntlet is a somewhat clunky platformer but I like the creativity, both in terms of mechanics and the story. This subpar experience is also only 1 hour long. It just seems like the developers had good idea but lacked the experience. Saying all that, the game has some potential. The most notable feature of the game is a grappling hand which makes the platforming gameplay more dynamic. Your metal arm also has an electric power which can be used to interact with enemies and the environment.
I thought that animation and backgrounds were decent. However, visuals are not very polished and the controls can be difficult to tolerate. Not to mention countless glitches or problems with hitboxes. I should note that music sounds familiar so I assume it was not made for the game. The soundtrack also does not fit the tone of the story and the environment. In general, I think that concept was interesting but the quality of gameplay just isn't there. For the most part, I was just fighting the controls for an hour.
Pros:
+ fun mechanics
+ interesting story concept
+ has some variety
+ animation and backgrounds are okay
Cons:
- clunky controls
- some visual issues
- frequent bugs
- almost no settings
- short
Final Thoughts 5/10
I think the game can be decent with some updates. If it was a little longer maybe I would recommend it. The combination of short length and subpar experience just makes it hard to enjoy. Perhaps you should add it to the wishlist and see if it developers care enough to improve it. Otherwise, you have to play it with a very forgiving attitude.
