Fun little old-school RPG throwaway, worth the price for content and quality

Paper Dungeons Crawler is a rogue-like RPG. It has five character classes that share the same weapons and spells. There's three difficulty levels and a challenging game for veterans. It has an option where your character can eat if you wish. Also the choice to play with or without permanent death. There are many skills, spells, scrolls and potions to aid your character. It's so simple and yet so deep, that even a novice can learn. There's even a new Bestiary. Recommended for fans of Tangledeep.

I have had to stop playing due to a bug that prevents me from gaining mana beyond the base amount; meaning any mana that should count towards my Max mana from items are worthless. While ignoring this bug I would still not recommend this game. It feels like an Early Access that is not complete. The bestiary page that is increased by picking up cards from slain monsters that are not already in your bestiary yield useless information. The monsters all seem to behave pretty much the same way. There is some unintuitive mechanics that are more punishing in a rougelike. For example, when you use a Scroll of Uncursing it does not allow for uncursing an item in your inventory, you have to equip the Cursed Item 1st then use the scroll. The Rune system is meaningless. You can only cast Runes you have already learned from finding Crystals, either from Epic Chests or what seemed to be more common from killing Dragons. You can memorize the patterns of your learned Runes and do that every time or what is way more practical you just assign the Runes you want to use to your Shortcut / Hotkeys F1 - F5. The Talents Champion, Heavy, Hunter, Ninja, Runic, and Merchant also feel meaningless. They just increase the rate of 1 specialization to increase faster.

I'm not one to write reviews, but this game really blew me away. I really wasn't expecting to like the game this much, the apparent bad graphics made me put this game on the "maybe i'll buy it at a discount" list. I'm 32 hours into it and now i feel bad for buying at a discount. I'd 100% buy any DLC for this game. 10/10 for me.

It's not bad but dungeon crawl stone soup and angband are just so much better and are free. I really don't see the point in spending money just to get some music (which is public domain anyway) and sound effects and some dodgy animations (1. The animation of your character fighting continues for ever if you keep moving after defeating an enemy. 2. You have to wait after you bumped a destroyable to let it spawn any contents). It's annoying how you are forced to use the mouse. You can redefine the keys which is something but you can't operate the game solely with the keyboard. Even just moving, if you use the keyboard and hold a key down you will move at an annoyingly slow rate whereas if you click on a distant square with the mouse it's much faster. I'm giving it a thumbs down but it's not a bad game; it deserves a neutral rating really. There's nothing wrong with except it not respecting your time or your choice of control scheme but there's nothing to recommend it over free offerings.

The game is, frankly, adorable. While not complete, it's still enjloyable. It does seem like a generic Rogue-Lite, but it's not bad. I just hope this game escapes the deep dungeon of Early Access Development. I think this game could be cool.

When it says, it's a "true rogue-like" they aren't kidding. Paper Dungeons has many of the aspects of the original rogue, a simple dungeon crawler randomly generated, with RPG elements and permadeath. This has to be the most rogue-like, rogue-like I've seen on Steam next to Vulture for NetHack (which was abandon-ware). However, it's not just a rogue clone; this game has a simple set of classes and progression system that lets you build your character and still customize it for different styles of play, based on what you find in your adventures. There's also the concept of different zones, allowing your character to finish one dungeon and go on to another effectively that's thematically slightly different. This game shares a lot in common with "I Am Overburdened," including the retro look. However, unlike that game it's not as linear, allowing you to choose different paths for your adventure. I'd think this game would have more replay value than that one. Paper Dungeons is fun, but death comes all too easily. It does suffer from that problem of the original rogue games that if you are taking a real wailing, it's hard to realize your health meter has just dropped precipitously because you've been plowing through the rest of one level in your stride. I'd love to see Steam controller support and maybe a little better UI, perhaps making the magic system more apparent. It is early access at this point, which means it needs a little more work on graphics, maybe some quest development, and it needs some work on music, which is highly monotonous. However, good game, and if you are a rogue-like fan well worth the money.

A simple, but engaging distillation of roguelike dungeon crawling. The graphics are appealingly cute, and there's a generally strong presentation that helps a lot to maintain interest in the low intensity moments roguelikes tend to have between the more intense engagements.

If you love the genre and are looking for a time sink. its pretty fun, however there isnt as much to keep my interest after the first run. For the money I got plenty out of it. These games are what I play when I have anxiety issues, so I like it for a fairly specific reason. hopefully that helps any of you anxiety disorder people.

Paper Dungeons Crawler is a simple and fun traditional roguelike, offering procedural generation, unidentified items, a classic hunger system, permanent death and a lot of YASD (Yet Another Stupid Death) moments. While this game it’s not overly difficult like pillars of the genre, you can easily die if you’re not paying enough attention. And if permadeath is not your cup of tea, you can turn it off before starting a new character. Featuring five classes (Warrior, Archer, Priest, Mage, Thief), 25 procedural (randomized) levels, 60 different creatures, 120 unique items, five bosses, nine specializations to choose when you level up and six talents, there’s a lot of content for the price here to keep you occupied. What is also great is that you can choose different paths to follow your journey, and this raises even more the replay value. The game is played with mouse and keyboard combined (or only mouse if you prefer), and it can’t be played using the keyboard only. While this may displease some roguelike purists, I think the control scheme is very user friendly, making the game more accessible to a larger audience. If you played Dungeons of Dredmor, you know what to expect, since the control scheme here is very similar. If you want to know how the game works, there’s a detailed tutorial that shows the basics of the game and also explain some strategies. When you beat the game you can try playing on other difficulty settings (there are four of them to choose), and your highscore is higher on the toughest settings. Also, if you beat the game with permadeath on you unlock the Veteran Mode, which allows you to start the game with extra runes and skill levels. It’s also worth mentioning that you can choose to play as a male of female character for each class, and there’s even a random name generator if you’re not feeling inspired. While this game feels generic at times and it doesn’t bring nothing new (apart from the magic system, which is very unique), it’s still a great and fun time killer, and it’s an excellent choice for that days when you want to play a roguelike but don’t want an extremely punishing experience. If you’re a veteran of the genre, don’t worry - classic ridiculous deaths are still here, but they almost never feel cheap and unfair. All in all, if you can’t get enough of roguelikes, or you’re still discovering this genre, Paper Dungeons Crawler is a good addition to your library. Pros: * Easy to learn and hard to master * Intuitive and easy to use control scheme * Good amount of content for the price * Great, friendly and detailed pixel art * High replay value due to procedural levels and different paths to choose Cons: * Very few music tracks. Play with your own music for maximum enjoyment * If you’re expecting a revolutionary entry in the genre, you will be disappointed
