Cute, but not cute enough for how annoying it's checkpoint system is.

Unfortunately I can not recommend this. A year ago (possibly more at this point) I had an issue where a cutscene would freeze when 2 robed figures would stand in front of some open portal. I contacted support and received thanks for making them aware of this issue and assurance that it would be fixed on the next update. The next update dropped and the issue remained so I dropped the play-through. Fast forward to today and I still cant get past this point after a few larger updates.
Replay is and should be expectedly poor. This is the type of game you'll play once and never pick it up again. Somehow steam didn't keep my save so I had to play 35% of the game all over again and there is a LOT of talking and explaining why you're doing various fetch quests and what an enemy's backstory is. Not interesting if you're already familiar with it. The gameplay between cutsceens/talking is too basic and short to feel 'worth while' playing again. I think this should be expected given the scope of the game and that's perfectly OK.

I've only just begun my retro journey into Sunshine Manor but I'm really enjoying it so far. Although I have to admit I almost dropped my tea when the bad guy jumped me in the dining hall! The pixel art is beautiful and the soundtrack really is something else too ... recommended!

Had played the first game previously and was surprised to find out during random browsing that it had gained a sequel.
Liked the now all-custom assets and the personality of the new protagonist, interested in seeing where the series goes from here.

"Sunshine Manor" is a short 2D-top-down action-adventure with a nudge to to survival horror. You play a young girl with psychic powers trapped in a haunted house fleeing from its cursed owner and rescuing some ghosts and your fellow kids in the process.
The pixel-visuals are nice and colorful, the tracks and the sounddesign are banger and on point, gameplay itself is a little rough around the edges (some sections and boss battles are rather barebones for example) and it is not really challenging, but it definetly has charm for it really catches that 80's-cheese-horror-retro-vibe and goes down nostalgia lane!
Not a masterpiece, but a joyful package throughout!

Sunshine Manor is a really nice mix of 80s Nostalgia, Horror and classic games such as Earthbound with Zelda-like elements thrown in for good measure! You can tell that the developers of the game really threw as much as they could into it (and from what I've read, it's only two people!). The graphics are beautiful, with classic pixel art and a really great atmosphere bolstered by the soundtrack (which is absolutely fantastic too!). Looking forward to getting further into this game ... well done Fossil Games!

This is one of those games that you need to play in a dark room with headphones on. The music is a trip down nostalgia-lane and the call backs and references to old school movies are epic.
The tension and mood of the game encapsulate the retro gaming vibe perfectly. I get caught off guard by some of the scares and sound fx too; and the overall sound design is spot on.
Seeing where this is leading, I can't wait for another game from Fossil Game!

Only an RPG in the sense that I feel it was made in RPGmaker. That's not necessarily a bad thing, some RPG-maker games are A+.
In this case though, the pacing killed it for me. There's a lot of running around where you've already been, which is exacerbated by your character's very slow movement speed. You can sprint - sort of - but for about 2 seconds with a recharge time that feels like it's at least 6.
A fair number of enemies are indestructible (again, not really an RPG) which means that as you're backtracking, you'll also be running into enemies that you can't do anything about, multiplied by however many times you enter that room.
The final blow was the
maid quest where you're collecting the garbage.
Regardless of how many pieces are remaining, she always just says "at least one piece", which isn't the biggest deal - the issue though is, I've been through every accessible room in the house like 5 times, I swear, and there's still one somewhere apparently. I don't have it in me to look a 6th time.
This wasn't helped by whole "you can only carry one rock at a time" thing, which as far as I know has no other reason to be a limit except to make you do more backtracking.
I really liked the game graphically, and the writing didn't make me want to tear my eyes out, which is rare for these RPGmaker games. If you have the patience to check it out, check it out, but if you're someone who doesn't enjoy backtracking, you'd be best advised to stay away.

Sunshine Manor sheds the RPG Maker appearance of the first game and ramps up the cartoonishness in both graphics and tone. The look is perfect, though I think they overdid the unshakable pluckiness of the heroine -- even for such a lighthearted setting as this. There is no hiding from an unkillable slasher this time; gameplay is all exploration, obstacle avoidance, and leisurely aggression, which provides a stimulating, though seldom exhilarating, experience. It's best described as a short 80s cheese-horror Zelda. Sure, the writing could be tighter -- but it looks great, sounds great, and is never boring. It has quite a bit more personality and polish than the first game, even if the gameplay is less tense.
You search a decaying mansion for earthbound ghosts, then dive through portals to free them -- flip to a Monster Party hellscape carpeted with flesh-and-blood lasagna, populated by demons that give off a Real Ghostbusters vibe: lumpy, brightly hued abominations with a little Artzybasheff in there for good measure. My type of demon!
I enjoyed both games in the Sunshineverse, and I'll be sure to snap up the next as soon as it's released. The dev seems to keep getting better!
