MegaRace 3 Reviews

MegaRace 3 is the third entry in the ever-popular MegaRace series. The first truly 3D game in the series seamlessly blends elements of futuristic racing and first-person shooters. Cynical presenter, Lance Boyle, is once again at the helm leading the player through hallucinogenic enhanced tracks whose environments are constantly changing.

MegaRace 3 is an ancient game from 2002. It's a whopping 21 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks proper widescreen aspect ratio (it's 4:3 only) and lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions, hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a relatively high price tag for such an ancient/abandonware game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge. It's a sci-fi racing game that has you take on the role of a futuristic sci-fi vehicle pilot/driver as you race other sci-fi punks around various low poly sci-fi/hallucinogenically inspired tracks. The game does feature some old-school curiousities such as full motion video as you get a rather well performed intro by an older actor who acts as a commentator and compere for the game and the racing scene. That's pretty well done and Microids obviously spent some money making this game all those decades ago. This nostalgia gouge didn't catch on, as reflected in the general public reception. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number on Steam was only 2 players. That's right, only 2. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in the game is to be expected. It's just too old. MegaRace 3 is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $3 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again.

If I tried to start this horrible game, I had to press Enter many times to avoid the game from crashing. The menu is completely buggy: the selection is automaticly rotating through the whole menu and you have to press Enter in the right moment to choose something. if you want to play multiplayer("S"), the game crashes or it simply doesn't work, If you try to play single-player the game crashes. If you choose somthing the game crashes. Summarized you can say this game is a single crash. If you somehow manage to get in the game, it's just as bad as its menu

As far as a Wipeout style AG racer goes...it doesn't seem to bad at all. It is a lot better than the racing in Megarace 2, but still fails to reach the fun of the first one. But there are three problem I encountered: 1. The screen shakes. This game is not Win10 friendly...and it looks like my issues are better than what others have had. I could play it, but there were times where the screen would shake a bit too much that it was disorientating. 2. The different ship modes: attack, speed, and defense. It took forever to take someone out firing on them during the mandatory practice...but when I did arcade mode the first time it was too easy to just stay in first. However attack mode seemed to control better and go faster than speed mode. Hmmm...... 3. This one hurts to say: Lance Boyle kills this one. He is great in Megarace....cool and sarcastic. This one has way too much forced comedy. Its...well...annoying. Also the video is even lower budget than the first. The first game had a very futuristic cyber feel to it. This one it just feels like Lance is shooting out of his garage. As a racer it is good...if you can get it working. Its just said that one of the best things about Megarace, Lance, is the nail in the coffin in this one.....

For some reason the contrast in this game is extremelly low... or high? i don't know, all i see is black. the meny is too dark, most the stages i can only see the bright ceiling and everything else is black... but guess what? while showing it to my friends (and even taking screenshot) the image is shown bright and clear. so basically, the game ins unplayable for me, as the game have no option to correct contrast. and no, i'm not messing my screen just to play this game every time i wanna play it. aside from that, the megaracer suffers from seizures, even more in speed mode where it feels like it's getting stuck on the ground. It may be a port problem, or this crappy zoom emulator they used. as it is, the game is unplayable for me.

MegaRace 3 is the abonmination child of Wipeout and F-zero's a little older friend Megarace. I got so excited when i saw the price of the bundle. Started playing the first one...I was a happy camper. The first Megarace is as simple as they come for a combat racer. 2nd one would have looked pretty cool back in the day. Now it doesn't. However this is about 3rd installment which I only managed to pull through about 3 minutes due to menus glitching whenever I tried useing a pad and trying to set that up. It felt strange, if not wrong with the transforming ship. It's a cool idea, but it has been executed poorly and feels like the devs just took the name (Megarace) and Lance and shoved it in to a smoothie maker with a few otherwise cool ideas, stuck it in the oven and took it out half baked because of whatever reason. "It looked done". But boy did it not feel done, Even for the bundle. The third installment of a game that changed racing for the 90's (imo) makes me physically ill and while yes I can say I have played it. I will never bring it up and I will do almost anything to never see it again. While I bring it up now. It belongs on the shelf with the Zelda CD-i games and Myst 3d for the 3ds. Whatever you do. If you plan on playing this with a controller. Good luck, if you plan on playing this with a keyboard. God speed. If you plan on purchasing this at all. May the gamer gods have mercy on your soul.

If MegaRace ever gets it's reboot finished, I'm sure it will be nothing like MR3. For a game with "Upgraded Tech" it just feels so cheap compared to the first 2...and borderline unplayable. Also, why replace the cars with? Wannabe F-Zero Wipeout Pod Racers?

One press [ENTER] in menu - single or double jump out to desktop and return to game menu. It is a bug. Unfortunately, the game is useless on Windows 10.
