The game itself isn't bad, but doesn't seem finished. At all. It has now crashed 4 or 5 times in the last hour. Based upon these issues, I would say pick it up if you can do so during a deeply discounted sale. The regular price is far, far too high for the game as it is.

WOW!! Strike Force Hydra is an extremely awsome game. If you enjoyed Demon's Rise: Lords of Choas and Demon's Rise: War For The deep You'll probably enjoy Strike Force Hydra. Unlike the first two games Hydra is more of a Sci-Fi turrn based strategy RPG. I found the game extremely fun. I hope that Wave Light Games makes more games like these three. The only thing I don't like about this game like War for the deep is it is 'buggy' the game crashes a lot. This game provides hours of fun and only costing $9 CDN makes it a very good deal. Definetly worth the price!

This is a very decent and enjoyable game. Most negative reviews here don’t do this game justice. It has good graphics and good gameplay mechanism. True, this is not an in-depth RPG game, but this is not what it was intendent to be. It is a turn-based tactical game and it is delivering just that. I like this game and happy that I was not deterred by the mix reviews. I am also planning on checking the fantasy style twin game – Shieldwall. For the low price of this game it is definitely worthwhile.

Ok so I'm going to be really honest about this game.
I'm sure this is an engine demo with a game tacked on. With that in mind there is barely anything compelling about the game as far as story, motivation, lore, characters...etc. It's all really really generic. So if you can get past that, it's actually a fun engine with plenty of challenging missions to pass the time with before you get your next XCOM game.
Or you could just make up a BS story along the way - dub over it and make a hilarious lets-play. Either way it's a fun diversion and I also bought it because I want to see what the devs can do when these things are evolved further.

I like it, I like all of the games from this developer, he found his niche and it works for him. Pretty much it's simple but stream lined; you and your team are dropped into missions with minimal plot, kill everything or make sure an npc survives (while you kill everything). It is just tactical combat with a cover system, no over watch though. Like a completely stripped down X-Com which is exactly what I wanted. As you complete missions you get experience and party members level up, points are automatically distributed, you also get money and equipment as rewards and can purchase more equipment from the store to improve your team.
If you just want a simple but relaxing, challenging at times, combat only game than this nails it.

I have not experienced crashes with this game as mentioned by some other players. I am using Windows 10 on a computer that is a couple of years old. The fights in the ship seem very cramped which means it is very hard to place soldiers in a way that minimizes the risk of being hit by an enemy grenade or area effect weapon. It is also difficult to determine if line of sight exists at potential movement destinations. It also seems difficult to throw grenades over low obstacles; at least that has been my experience. I agree with some statements that the game shows its mobile roots. The size of the battle areas seems to reinforce this idea, at least in the first missions. This game will not satisfy the XCOM itch of players that enjoy the complexity of XCOM but It may appeal to those that prefer only to focus on tactics. Although the game does not appeal to me since I like XCOM's complexity I do recommend the game for the more casual player in the turn based tactics genre.

Strike Team Hydra is a scifi turn-based tactical combat that is a little reminiscent of XCOM, but with its own flourishes and mechanic. With no less than 12 classes of fighters to choose from, all with different power curves and synergies, it's clear that this game, even with only 20 or so missions (edit: turns out there are 20 more hiding under a different button), offers almost endless replayability, and with 5 difficulty modes, from "casual" all the way to "extreme", this game is bit deeper than its price point suggests. Too bad the universe is a bit... derivative and bland, and with no true randomness in the missions, it's pretty much replay the same missions for better loot.
As the marine strike team leader of the strike cruiser Hydra, you are taking your team into battle to save the Heavy Cruiser Talwar against the enemy that have boarded, in a series of battles both attacking and defending, plus a few special missions. You have twelve marines, one of each class, in the pre-defined party, and you can take six into battle. Or you can spend time and design your own perfect squad. It is up to you.
The enemy was clearly inspired by the Tyranids in WH40K, and indeed, many of the weapons and armor like "Cadian Rifle" or "Marauder Boots" are clearly "inspired by" WH40K as well.
Each marine can be equipped with a whole slew of equipment, such as helmets, belts, torso armor, leg armor, boots, paldrones, bracers, and more, in addition to their class equipment such as weapons. The twelve classes different in their skills and equipment, some specialize in melee and movement, some use heavy weapons, and so on. There are even Psi-marines and hackers in the game, able to control enemies to turn them against each other. (again, from WH40K the Psyker) And they each have advanced ability to unlock at higher levels.
The game mechanic is based on "action points". Each action you can perform costs action points, from movement to shooting to enable special abilities. There's also "counter-attack", where your character, if shot at, will shoot back, if it has sufficient counterattacks remaining this turn. Enemy will counterattack as well if shot at, unless they are melee only, in which case, they will counterattack at melee range.
Special abilities differ based on class. Command can rally troops (improve morale, decrease chance of panic). Infiltrator can teleport up to 7 hexes instantly, creating tremendous movement possibilities. Heavy weapon can fire stabilizers, which locks him in place, but gains accuracy and range. You get the idea.
Actual movement is on a hex grid overlaid onto the 3D level. While there are stairs, they are for decoration only. The actual level is on a single level, often with tight corridors and entrances.
Morale is a factor in this game. As you or your side take hits, morale will drop, and when morale drops below a threshold the unit will panic. But the same can happen to the enemy as well.
There are a LOT of random temporary bonus items to grab on the battlefield for temporary boosts, such as health, accuracy, counter-attack, and so on, and they seem to be randomly spawned (though some are pre-spawed as well). So there are tactical choices to be made. Would grabbing one expose you to enemy fire, but give you boost in firepower or accuracy, be worth the trade?
Missions are pre-set and there are no random enemies (no skirmish with random enemies), as enemies spawn at the same locations. On some missions you get friendly turrets or friendly marines. Some missions have enemy re-spawn every X turns from entrance points. and you need to kill those on the map quickly to finish the mission. There are 20 in the main "campaign", with 20 more hidden under another button.
While the missions are limited and does not really vary much, you are allowed to replay them at harder difficulty levels, for much better loot. And indeed, any money you make from the mission are probably plowed right back to the store to buy better gear. On casual there won't be much loot, but on higher difficulty levels there will be more lucrative loot, which you will need for later fights, as you level up your marines. Some items are ONLY available as loot drops and not available in stores.
There are some tactics to consider. On Casual, you will probably not lose any team members, as long as you don't completely goof off. But on the higher difficulty level (hard, or extreme), expect to retry a mission many times. while you figure out how to combine the different powers to maximize the damage output.
The line of sight rules are followed, and the bodies stay around, plus bodies left from previous fights and damage on the walls and floors, sure adds to the ambiance. The view is rotatable 360, but due to lack of range markers (how far your weapon reaches) the game's UI left a little to be desired.
The graphics are nothing to write home about, but it looks okay, if a bit derivative, and a bit too "busy". The equipment also does not visibly change the marines, just their stats. The different pieces of gear with different stats look almost like cartoon drawings, and doesn't fit the scifi theme, as if they got them off an asset library.
The tutorial is pretty horrible. There's no real explanations given, The game also seems to be designed for lower res screen as cranking it to highest res made some portions of the game render with tiny fonts.
The "shop" UI is pretty horrible as well. There's no "sell" function. You can only 'trade" (take one item from vendor, drop item to sell at spot it vacated, click "buy" to conclude transaction and you get credited with the difference). There's also a explanation screen that starts the shop UI and cannot be turned off.
Typical play loop: take your squad, spend the credits you gained from previous mission at the shop, trade in equipment for better ones by comparing stats and pay the difference. Once money spent and squad outfitted, go to missions, and play the mission you want with the difficulty setting you want. Go through the mission (generally, kill every hostile). Once done, take the bounty/reward from the mission, assign looted "wargear" to any of the marines who can use it, then go back to the shop to spend the credits, and the cycle repeats.
.Each mission only lasts a a few turns, or a few minutes if you make your moves pretty quickly. Higher difficulty level generally just makes the enemies tougher (instead of dying with one shot, they will take 2-3.
I personally feel the "heavy weapons" don't feel heavy enough, and that includes both missile launcher AND flamer. Besides, how exactly does a flamer "miss"?
All in all, for the low price, it does offer a bit of challenge, and its sequel is already available. Worth a try, but only if you're paying bargain bin prices. As the grind itself is rather boring.

Played this on Android tablet many years ago and enjoyed, got it in a deal with Gladius for PC and still a very good playable tactical sci-fi TBS. Developer needs to fix some issues with shop as noted in forum.

Fun game well and truly worth it's asking price!
It's XCOM that has traded away the pesky base management for more in depth soldier classes and loot!
You choose your team of 6 soldiers, out of a whopping 12 character classes, and exterminate varied aliens that are boarding your enormous battleship.
Each of the classes are very different, ranging from rocket launcher toting fellas in heavy armour, to sword wielding ninjas, cyborgs and even a pair of magic (psychic) users. Lots of synergy between classes, lots of abilities, lots of combos.
Add to that, RPG styled levelling up and gear.
There is a shop that sells you weapons, armour and mods (in-game currency only, there is NO premium currency). You can also acquire gear at the end of each mission.
One of my favourite features is that swapping between characters is seamless. In between missions you can swap out one of your 6 people for another class - all experience and gear from the swapped character is transferred.
Meaning, no more grinding for hours if you wish to use a diverse roster, hurrah!
In short it's a lot of fun and I'm glad I spent money on this and not a cheeseburger.

Yes, this is a phone port, but it has been well optimized for PC play. It is a simple version of an X-Com type of turn-based tactical shooter, RPG. It is a lot of fun. You can choose up to 6 team members from a field of 12 different types which each specialize in different weapons/tactics. There is a Team Leader, a Medic, a Melee Assassin expert, a Flame Thrower, a Shot Gun, a Space Marine, a Psi Ops, a Missle Launcher, a Small Tank, a Sniper, and a teleporting Cyborg.
There are 28 mission battles in the linear campaign, and an additional 20 special one-off missions that you can also fight between campaign battles. The tactical fights are on a space cruiser, so tight quarters in corridors and small rooms. You can use cover to hide behind and suppression fire. Don't group your team (beware of grenades). Each team member has Morale, Action Points and Hit Points, special abilities, different weapon skills, etc.
You unlock the next mission as you successfully complete a fight. You can find loot (e.g., armor and weapons) to use/sell after battles, and you can sell/purchase better weapons, armor, etc., in the store between missions.
The stats are simple and easy to figure out. If you have played any X-Com type of turn-based tactical shooter, RPG game, you will pick this up in a few minutes once you complete the tutorial. About the only thing missing is cover fire, but the Dev said that was becaused he wanted it to be a more fast-moving, offensive tactical game and less defensive fighting (think "Strike Team" not "Ambush Team").
Overall for what you get for the very low price, this is a gem and a steal, a 9/10. Try it, you will like it.
Also, the very small Dev Team, Wave Light Games, is extremely active on the Steam discussion boards, and has just put out two new games called "Demon's Rise: War for the Deep" and "Demon's Rise: Conquest of the Deep". They are turn-based Fantasy, RPG, dungeon crawlers, and just really great fun as well. Enjoy!
