I'm not recommending this game for one reason. You can't build how you want. The free build is a lie. Paths can only go in set directions. When you place paths and want to connect more paths to it, they wont connect half the time and when they do they wont connect how you want. Also if you have railings on and try to connect a path, the railings block the other path and you just have railings in the middle of your paths. When you try and place a blueprint, you can only place them in 1 meter intervals. This is the only game so far that i have had these problems in. I hope that this problem isn't in there next game.

Two words:
Building Mode.
Holy cow, i have never seen a building mode as CRAPPY and Clunky as this one....
if you came here looking for a zoo tycoon-like experience turn back, this is nothing like it, this is bad compared with it, the building is stressful, the management part is bad, the everything is just not good, i got it on 95% discound and even so i feel i wasted a dollar.

I have played a lot of Tycoon/City Builder/Resource Managements etc games. Like a lot, a lot.
Never in my life have I experienced such an obtuse, finnicky, clunky, building system. From the way barriers are placed, to the terrain and pathing system, ever single part of the experience was absolutely miserable. Every other aspect of the game is great and I'd really like to be able to enjoy it but I just cannot.

I wanted to love this game so much, but as many others have said, the build mode mechanics, path building especially, is so clunky and not user friendly at all. I thought at first that it was mostly a user error on my part, because as with any game it takes time to learn, but I found myself googling what I was doing wrong a lot, I had camera issues the whole time I played, and found out through reddit users that the camera issues specifically has been an ongoing bug with Planet Zoo for the past 7 years that hasn't been fixed by the dev team. It was not relaxing, I found myself frustrated while playing, and not enjoying myself. It was nothing like the tycoon type games I remember from my childhood. I loved that the build mode is way more advanced and has plenty of free build capabilities, my qualm isn't that its too complicated or advanced, but its just way too unintuitive for my liking. I hope the new Planet Zoo 2 focuses on cleaner mechanics that feel instinctive and user-friendly to make gameplay more enjoyable without sacrificing the vast creative capabilities.

Very fun and very addicting!
The animals are cute and are appealing to watch. The baby animals are so adorable. I just can't get enough of them.
I like making different habitats for the different animals, but I feel like you start with very few options at the beginning—like the enrichment options—and it kinda takes a while to research stuff.
There are two negatives that come to mind immediately, and they are:
1. The amount of DLCs and the price that they cost. $10 is absolutely absurd for a few animals. (And a ton of scenery pieces apparently.) I got a few DLCs because they're on sale for $4 each, which is still pretty expensive IMO. And there are like 20 animal DLC packs, which is crazy. Not quite on par with EA or Paradox, but they definitely have similar ideas...
2. Some animals seem to cost only conservation credits on Franchise mode, meaning you are unable to buy them with cash, and only with a currency that seems very annoying and grindy to get.
I don't know if this game is worth the full price, but you can get it on sale for a very good deal. I got the deluxe edition for $2.74. So there's no arguing there about wasted money.

This game was really fun while it was working. Now it crashes ALL THE TIME. During startup, during gameplay, ALL THE TIME! I've played for almost 300 hours and purchased all the the DLCs and now it won't run. I've tried every option I can find to fix it and nothing works. My computer is plenty strong enough to handle this game. Even zoos that are still empty are crashing. Frontier has no help to offer, Steam has no help to offer. I'm thinking Planet Zoo 2 will be a waste of money too.

If you’re expecting a relaxing zoo management game where you build habitats, watch animals, and enjoy a cozy experience, this is not that game.
Planet Zoo is a building simulator first and a zoo game fifth or even sixth. The construction tools are complex and unintuitive. You seriously feel like the game is fighting you for no reason. Unless you want to CAD engineer every little piece of the scenery, the building system will drain your energy and make you sad.
The game was marketed as a spiritual successor to Zoo Tycoon 2, but it doesn’t capture that spirit at all. ZT2 was cute, relaxing, and accessible. Planet Zoo is rigid, punishing, and expects you to wrestle with its systems just to place a straight wall or connect a building to a path.
The management side isn’t any kinder, as the economy is harsh and unforgiving, and the staff AI is pretty dumb. The overall experience just screams THIS IS A SECOND JOB!!!
If you want a pleasant zoo game, this is not it. If you want a technical building sandbox with animals somewhere in the very distant background, look no further.
