A very short and technically simple musical experience that is worth inspection by anyone curious. The game tries several things with the music and how it connects to the game, and plays with interactivity and simple cutscenes to good effect. The music does a lot of the heavy lifting here. It's very good and broadly likable by most. The production quality on the sound is generally very high. The music is so good, it makes me less critical of the extremely simple graphics (which are less cool lo-fi and more low budget). Through some of the more cinematic camera motions you can imagine this game being a sight to behold with a larger financial backing. As it stands, this is a very worthwhile curiosity to anyone who likes experimentation in games and wants to see more gaming musicals in general.

A walking sim that's also a musical, interesting. It's short and flawed, but at the same time unique and beautiful in its on way. I felt captivated by the story and the music.

This is a great example of a sung-through musical (think Les Misérables where all the dialogue is communicated musically) that conveys good storytelling both musically and visually. The plot is simple and sometimes strange but it is also a great example in that respect of a modern mythological fantasy tale. The graphics are the least pleasing aspect of this game but they make up for it in the design area to create beautiful scenery. What carried the 15 minutes I spent with this game, though, is the great music and vocals. I only wish it were longer. For the price of perhaps a cheap burger, I would implore you instead to spend 15 minutes relaxing with this game and support them so that they make more stuff in the future.

A short, surreal adventure in which you shoot down moons and must face the consequences. I wouldn't say that "Yi and the Thousand Moons" is that much a game, but rather I would describe it as an interactive artistic storytelling project. The use of music was actually some of the best I have seen; it very much felt like a musical with fluid transitions between songs/chapters and great use of sound (your footsteps are in sync with the songs!). Though it took me less than 20 minutes to finish, I very much enjoyed this brief little experience and, if you're as odd as I am, you probably will too. :)

More of a playable album than a game, it's an interesting experiment and experience. Only for those who aren't looking for standard 'gameplay'.

This game is musical based and will treat you to a wonderful range of nice and relaxing tunes while you solve the puzzles of saving the village and its residents. Having an ambiguous start where the character seems to be a little puzzled turns into her eventually finding the correct path to saving her village and doing so taking the player into a thoughtful journey alongside as a companion. Can be a little awkward figuring out the mechanics but it is very simply and within 5 mins should be a breeze for almost all players to get a grasp of the game. In this short game there are also story based achievements in which are easily obtained and gives your profile a nice "perfect game" statistics too. Enjoy!

I got this game at a 66% discount from Steam, so I payed less than £1 for it. In that respect, this game is worth much more than what I paid for it. The time and effort that would have gone into making this game definitely makes it worth more than that. However, I wouldn't recommend this game, simply because I didn't enjoy it. I didn't find the music as beautiful as many other reviews said it is, and I personally don't like the combination of simplistic character and environment design with very detailed particle effects.

A third person adventure figuratively and emotionally built out of vibrant watercolor and melodic song. This may very well be one of the most unexpected delights I've experienced in my gaming career. As you take control of Yi, you will journey through seven songed levels, discovering how the world of the living and the world of the gods collides into and out of harmony. You will face duty, despair, and decisiveness as you learn the meaning of human loyalty, lyrically displayed. A genuine passion project with powerful music and gorgeous color, Yi and the Thousand Moons is a small jem that hits a heartwarming high note.

Before I start, I did not hate this game. While the game was not 'bad', I cannot recommend it in good faith. The game was very short, I finished it in 19 minutes. Whether that time is worth 3 USD is up to you. Positive things: The concept for the game was something I enjoyed. The story-telling through music and brief songs was very interesting and not many games try it. The graphics weren't "the best" but the different characters were distinct, had a fair amount of detail, and were nice to look at. All of voice actors [in English, I do not know if they had different ones for the other languages] had a decent voice on them and were not annoying to listen to. Negative things: One of my biggest complaints is simple: if you're going to make the story explained through song, have the lyrics/tempo match well with the background music playing. It was worse early game and got better as it went through, but at the start the main character's singing and tempo were very jarring with the music playing. I thought perhaps she wasn't the best singer but I came to realize it was that the song playing in the background and the song she sang did not mesh well. Another issue I found was trying to fire her bow. I don't know if perhaps that was user error, but I found I could only fire the bow if I was standing in a certain spot. I would spam both "fire" keys in an attempt to get her to use her bow. This made the first objective weird as I did not hit all targets before it simply marked the progress as "complete." It also made later objectives annoying as I had Yi spinning in circles trying to find the "sweet spot" for using the bow. Overall, while the game was not "bad" I simply cannot recommend it due to the short length and the jarring disconnect between the music and song that plagued the earlier parts of the game. If it was longer or had no issue with the music, I would probably recommend it.
Yi and the Thousand Moons
Original and beautifully performed. I enjoyed my time with Yi. I would love to see this developed further into a full blown musical extravaganza. That would be amazing.
Pros:
👍 Superb sound track 👍Relaxing and chilled atmosphere 👍Fascinating concept which I would love to see developed further. 👍Seven very easy achievements.
Cons:
👎Very short experience – only 20-30 mins. 👎Not much interaction. 👎No Trading Cards.
First Impressions
This is the first time I have experienced a game such as this and I really liked the concept. More musical theatre than a game. You walk Yi through the seven short levels in a linear fashion letting the music tell the story. There are a few characters in the game, namely the villagers and the Gods. As you approach a character they begin to sing and tell the story. Each of the seven chapters has a song to go along with the brief adventure. The drama is sung along to the music and performed beautifully. The melodies are wonderfully arranged and the singing sounds angelic. The story is based on pure fantasy and doesn’t have much meaning. There are obvious notes of regret and redemption but the story is not long enough to be too deep. This is a real shame as I think the developers have an excellent concept that would be amazing if there was a more meaningful message and a longer story. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1949636252 Gameplay is minimal. You move the character around with the WASD keys and control the camera with your mouse. Yi can shoot arrows with her bow at stationary targets. The shooting mechanics are a bit clunky and sometimes fail to work. It doesn’t distract however. Shooting these targets just progresses the story along and there is no difficulty whatsoever. Visuals are basic and a little crude but they are quite atmospheric and have a certain charm. They fit well with the musical score creating an oriental vibe with a mixture of fantasy. I enjoyed my 30 minutes with Yi and the Thousand Moons. It would be perfect for a younger audience and I would highly recommend wearing headphones during the experience. I hope this kind of design gets developed further. It is an interesting idea and I would love to see this type of game have a longer story and perhaps more interaction. Due to its short nature I would recommend picking this up in a sale unless you opt for the deluxe version with the soundtrack.
Story
🕹️ Darkness is expanding and the Gods ask Yi to shoot down the moons to harvest the light. The villagers warn Yi against this plan as it will invoke stardust and consume the land. Yi must find a way to save the village from impending catastrophe.
Gameplay
There is hardly any gameplay to speak of. You move Yi around the screen using the keyboard. There is no controller support but the only keys you need are WASD and the left mouse button. The gameplay is incredibly simple. Occasionally you will need to fire arrows at a stationary target or move Yi through a portal or doorway to progress the story. The story is sung and you watch the characters sing along with the subtitles to read. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1949636098
Sound:
🎵 The highlight and the whole notion of the game is the music. It is stunningly beautiful to listen to. Voices sound crystal clear and professional. The musical arrangements are expertly written and performed. At times you have more than one character singing along with the music and it performs just like a musical adaptation of a story. The music has an oriental and fantasy feel and is an original score written and developed by David Su. It’s just a shame there wasn’t more of it. You can buy the deluxe version of the game which includes the soundtrack. Each song is a couple of minutes long so it is a short album of seven songs.
Graphics:
📺 Even though the graphics were quite basic they fitted into the game perfectly. They are colourful and imaginative and gave a fantasy feel to the game. Now and again it looked a bit too basic but this never distracted from the experience. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1949635938
Conclusion
A really fascinating idea which was implemented professionally and with charm and beauty. The story lacks depth however and although I enjoyed my time with Yi and the Thousand Moons I just wished it was longer. I hope this game is commercially successful and more games are developed with these criteria as it could be a moving experience with a deeper and more meaningful story. Buy it on sale for a brief, relaxing time or buy it to play along with a younger audience. I would imagine they would really love it.
