Got it for 10 cents... Still dissapointed in this game..
Toen kon Piet weer janken
Door heel Nederland.
En op het laatst gingen de zwarte te keer.
Hopelijk gebeurd dat volgend jaar niet meer.
2/10 BLACK PETE IS RACIST (xD)

Well, it's not so bad for what it is and for its price..
But the game is absolutly no fun to play, at least to me, and the graphics aren't very great..
It's still a casual game to play when you're bored but ughhh.. It doesn't take more than 5 minutes for the game to piss me off.

Finally made it. Never knew I could. The game is beat'able, but you definetely going to have to master dodging and game mechanics overall. It takes a while.
Can not recommend because the game was more pain in the ass to me than actual gameplay.

OK, LOOK.
I got the game on sale for $0.49.
It's hard and doesn't start you in fullscreen FOR SOME REASON.
Chucking presents is not immediately intuitive.
The FREAKING platforms that instant-kill you... GAHH.
But... like...
It DOES tickle an arcade itch for me a bit.
You CAN learn to be better at the game.
The game takes time and skill to master.
It's basically Dark Souls.
Enjoy.
Rough but decent action score-attack game
There are currently three Hooligan Vasja games on Steam: This one, the original, and the Halloween version. Christmas and Halloween versions were originally DLCs of the original. Unlike Halloween version, Christmas version changes the gameplay in various ways.
At the core, all are very similar: Vasja is a kid who runs up the rain gutter of houses to wreck their windows and inhabitants with projectiles. Appropriately for the theme, this time it's snowballs. After a certain score, a huge creepy boss appears and needs to be shot down to complete the level.
There are 5 levels, each of which introduces new enemies that only differ in appearance and damage their projectiles do - otherwise, each enemy works similarly, throwing a single object down the building at Vasja. Vasja has to both dodge these objects (to avoid getting damage) and the obstacles on his way, as hitting them even once is an insta-death. Some power-ups, like infinite fast ammo and kill-all rockets help on the way.
Twist of Christmas: What's different other than visuals?
Christmas version is thankfully different from the other two games.
First, it introduces another task for Vasja: You also have to deliver gifts to windows to save Christmas from the evil monsters who are there to ruin it. This introduces 'spacebar' as another key. You lose if you don't deliver for a set amount of time, and the boss appears after a number of presents instead of just score.
Second, windows are no longer shields nor do they need to be broken. This way, it is easier to hit the enemies as you no longer need to hit the window first nor aim below it. Neat change for a more casual game.
Third, the bosses are re-designed. They tend to shoot big projectiles instead of lots of small ones, and particularly the end boss has a new attack pattern. Also, they have only one hit location but regenerate health. Personally I'm just glad it was different to the other two games.
Mouse controls (+ spacebar)
Vasja is controlled mostly with mouse. Cursor and mouse is used to shoot the slingshot and also control, on which side of the gutter he's running up. Keep in mind that there are no gamepad or other control options available. As such, in my opinion these controls work just fine.
Additionally, spacebar is used to throw presents at windows. This uses some sort of 2D physics, and e.g. cats (a minor enemy type) and obstacles like balconies block them, potentially ruining a nice delivery.
It takes a bit to get used to everything that's happening on the screen as well as aiming the gifts. Particularly, Vasja's vertical throws are very powerful but oddly rather weak horizontally.
Switching sides of the gutter is instantaneous but learning to dodge both the projectiles and the obstacles takes some time. After a while it becomes quite intuitive, although sometimes there are unavoidable attacks.
Technically dated
For a game from 2017 (based on 2016 game), it is perhaps surprising that Hooligan Vasja: Christmas runs only in windowed mode or in low resolution in fullscreen. In fullscreen mode, there are input-less regions in the sidebars, in a widescreen monitor anyway.
I played in fullscreen because I'd imagine that clicking outside the window could spell death, it is fast-paced enough for that to happen.
At least the merry music and sound can be muted from within game, and adjusted separately.
Time for festivities
Christmas version made Hooligan Vasja feel fresh again. The addition of the gift mini-task, as well as the other tinier changes, make the game just as challenging as the first game, even though I already played it.
While I had already well versed through the first game, I still spent 3.5 hours in the game before managing to beat the end boss.
If you enjoyed the first game, I think you'd enjoy this one as well.

Oh man this game is a bit of a mess... I'll have to split this review into sections.
I'm glad I bought this game with a 90% off voucher (Making it 8 pence, which is about as much as it's worth).
The Game
The graphics are pretty shoddy and the controls are... also shoddy. You need to shoot presents far higher than you think you will need to, and I'm not sure why you can move a tiny bit up the pole if you can't move up and down freely along the whole thing?
You have one life throughout the whole game. Given that this is a game where the slightest wrong movement causes insta-death, this is not practical, and that even having three lives only would still be a tough challenge.
Leading on from this- there are too many elements to keep track of in this game in order to not die. You have a timer counting down to your death, which can only be replenished through shooting presents onto the window sills. You also have various enemies/cats attacking you, draining your health bar, which can only be replenished from random drops (that you might not even be able to pick up if they get dropped at all). You also have these random poles sticking out from your climbing space. Hitting even one of these will cause instant game over, whether or not it was in order to avoid an enemy attack or shoot a present into a window. These poles will also prevent your presents from flying properly.
Other notable problems?
The achivements in this game are not what they seem. Upon viewing the global achievement stats before purchase it would seem that all achievements were relatively easy to attain, with 33(ish) percent of people having played, having 100% of the achievements. This was actually what made me decide to buy the game, 8p or no 8p- another nice 100% to add to the shelf is always appreciated. However, I cannot believe that these figures are correct. The game is incredibly difficult due to only having one life, and after an hour I have not even faced the second boss (though I have come close), and I can't imagine that 33% of players have completed all the way past level 5. Something with those stats is not right.
Lastly, a note about trading cards as promised in the steam store page? Yeah, I thought at the very least I'd get the cards to make back my lousy 8p from this shambles of a game, however, the trading cards are not active and after a statement from the creator back in July (which was vague and hard to read, to say the least), I dont know when/if they will ever be available, so don't count on that.
___
All in all, pretty poor results for this game. It should be free, and even then I would caution people against purchasing.
