Bought this on sale for about 7 bucks, but even that seems too much for what this is.
This plays like it should be on an app store, since it plays closer to those than anything good on the Steam store.
You get a couple weapons, but from what I can tell, it's just about killing llamas.
The jokes aren't funny. They're stupid and you're smacked in the face immediately with political crap. I'm not here for that.
The presentation is not particularly enticing and the couple minutes of gameplay is pathetic.
Overall, it's not a bad game, it just needs a lot more polish.
Re-do the mechs so that they can walk over stuff like cars and smaller stuff, add more variety to the gameplay other than just running around shooting llamas, and take out the stupid jokes, all of 'em. Matter of fact, take out the entire expository intro and just say, "You'll be killing llamas."
Also decrease the price by more than half. Fourteen dollars for this is quite excessive for what it is.

It's a fun game. It's also very difficult. Even in casual I struggled to progress through the game. And I recently beat Nioh and Dark Souls 3 and...

I liked the idea of this game and was looking forward to playing it, but after giving it multiple tries I've decided to refund. It's just not a very fun twin-stick shooter.
It should be mentioned that I only played this solo. It feels like the game was designed with co-op in mind, but the only option is local, no online support, so I couldn't try it.
There's some strange design choices that really kill the fun, like how there's no way to gain back health when you're guaranteed to take at least a few hits every level. There's a "Transfusion" life steal perk but it doesn't seem to work at all, I was never regaining health when killing enemies.
There are abilities that should help with not taking hits, like the shield and jump/slam attack, but you can only use them 2-3 times before you're completely out of energy, and energy doesn't automatically regenerate, you have to kill llamas with car explosions to get more, or does it just have a random chance to drop from kills? I couldn't tell, but either way it takes too long to get energy back for how fast it can be used up.
It's also a pretty buggy game. The tutorial is broken, you can't complete it. I found mentions of this years ago in the forum but it was never fixed. You're also supposed to get a challenge in each level, which when completed gives you a perk (the only way to get perks), but they never show up. In my handful of runs, I've never gotten a challenge or perk past the very first one.
On top of that, there's an insane amount of chromatic aberration around the whole screen, it was a major eyestrain.
It feels like the game is close to being a fun twin-stick shooter, but the issues mentioned above mean I don't feel that I can recommend this game. There are many other better options in this genre.

10/10 solid game, pure llama slaughter satisfaction. There's nothing that hits my llama murdering needs like this game. Every person who believes llamas are pure evil will get their tinfoil hats after playing this game for 10 minutes. Let the llama murder commence #llamanatiMustFall

==========
VALA is a slick dual-stick shooter that comes as advertised, and the goofy we're-idiot-college-roommates humor works fine on the side considering all your gametime is almost solely invested in murdering entire small countries worth of llamas. Really the sort of thing I haven't played since Smash TV back when most people reading this review weren't even born or were busy filling diapers.
I have no doubt this would be amazing couch co-op for we're-idiot-college-roommates, but for god's sake I got this on Steam and it'd be really swell if I could give the creators more of my paycheck and tax return money by shilling out gift copies for friends who will never play this with me anyway if it had online multiplayer. Just saying.
TL;DR - I didn't mean to go past 2 hours of played time so I could refund it but here we are.

So I played this game way back maybe in 2017 and I added it to my wishlist in 2018. I've been hoping I could catch it on sale, but this game rarely goes on sale, and when it does, I'm broke. Yesterday, I bought it full price, and it is so worth it. It's not easy, but it is so fun! Just enjoy it for what it is!

I don't like this game very much.
It has a fun concept, and is very self-aware of it's cheesy humor. Visually, it looks nice, but it is a bit repetitive (more on that later).
The shooting is just meh. You have two guns to manage, so the aiming is slightly "off" since the weapons aim slightly to the left/right of where you are aiming. The weapons themselves are fun, and using them a certain amount unlocks new options. You have pistols, machine guns, lasers, freeze rays, missiles (some homing), grenades, etc. Good stuff. There is even a hose, which basically just keeps the llamas at bay. The whole setup is ripe for creating an effective "build" of two weapons. However, every weapon requires reloads, and the reload time is often an eternity. Personally, I'm not a fan of the reloading (as it exists).
The worst is the fact that the llamas are faster than you, it's nearly impossible to kite and shoot them. In some of the more claustrophobic environments it can really be a pain.
My biggest issue is that the moment to moment movement and shooting just don't feel good.
You do have a dash, a slam (which is great), and a shield. The dash is kind of limp, and while it can kill llamas, it isn't very effective. On top of that, they all use energy, which drops from killed enemies. I feel like they've increased the drop rate, but it's just another annoyance IMHO. I would rather have had cooldowns. Plus, when you have the shield active, you can't pick up energy. Sometimes the effect persists for a bit after you turn it off (or so it seems), which is especially annoying.
You also have a single health bar (no health pickups) and you get perks from time to time. The droprate was all over the place and none really felt like game changers. There are unlocks here, so perhaps the good stuff is later.
My last session ended in a lab area. I was supposed to find a scientist? I think, and it was even pointed out to me. However, the area you're in was bland and everything was samey hallways and I had no clue where to go. I was low on health, and the white llamas on the white floor were chipping me down. I eventually succumbed to the llamapocalypse after running out of energy with my shield. I did not feel like going for another run.
There are more zones after the first, but I haven't seen them.
Some people may enjoy the pace, I don't think I do. Maybe it's better in co-op, but you'll need some friends and controllers.
EDIT:
Gave it another shot. Controller is much better. The lab is a piece of shit maze. Everthing looks the same and it just doesn't make any goddamn sense. It reminds me of the sewer maze in Fester's Quest, only worse.
I think I finally found the exit, but I was spent. Cramped, llamas shitting out of every door and hole, and that stupid announcer lady screaming "Forget about the llamas!!" "Hurry Up". What the fuck do you think I'm trying to do?

While couch co-op is fun it's not always available, really needs to also have a "host" option, direct connect via IP or connect through steam or something option. Still reccomend, the puns are fantastic, the funs are fun, and i love the references to Llamas with Hats and Contra.

To me, Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse was what Tesla Vs. Lovecraft should have been. Yes, they are different games at the core, but let me explain.
What I like about VALA is that it's a modernized twin-stick wave fighter. It's 'room' based and not necessarily wave based. This slight nuance means all the difference. It doesn't feel so 'dumb' and thoughtless. It also has rogueish elements that add a nice layer of complexity to help combat the braindead act of fighting waves. The humor and polish are great (seriously, those llama puns are nuts). We have four player local co-op. We have metagame unlockables that make you stronger over time and add more variety. And most of all - it's really fun and addicting. Sometimes I even do runs just for the fun of it, and not necessarily with any particular goal in mind.
The only downsides I can mention are that I wish it could run on a toaster, and I'm not sure how long the whole game is by looking at unlocks. I will also mention that this game is difficult. Where Tesla Vs. Lovecraft had issues with the begining game being super easy and the endgame impossible, VALA seems to have a consistent 'rogue' standard of difficulty. You will struggle. Thankfully there is a nice layer of strategy available with regards to hoarde management. That's what will keep me playing.
Pros:
+Fantastic humor and polish
+Great twin-stick hoarde management strategy with satisfying abilities (using that stomp at just the right moment!)
+Fresh hybrid of twinstick wave fighter with room-based rogueish elements
+The metagame unlock system is refreshing and fun; it forces you to constantly try new weapons
+While I'm not sure how much content there is - it seems to merit the asking price
+Four player local play would be bananas
Cons:
-Won't run on a toaster
-Get ready to struggle
I'm pleasantly surprised with VALA. From early videos, I almost decided to not pick this up last minute. Glad I did. I think it's worth full price.
