Graphics, sound, music were all good. Not great, but pretty good.
You farm flops, grinding them out either by killing mobs, standing in the beam areas, or finding them in crates. It's fairly easy to get hundreds, even thousands, just takes time. The object of flops is to be spent on either skills or base upkeep.
1. I understand what a FLOP is, but I just can't get over the stupidity of the name.
2. I crafted the gun, killed a mantis invis, fell to my death, never got the achievements.
3. I would get the flops for a skill, then realize I couldn't make the machine. Got the flops for the skill to make the machine, couldn't make it because I didn't have the machine to make the parts for the machine I just learned. Gathered more flops to learn that machine, then started farming ingredients while farming flops.
4. Realized, after raiding a few bases, the end goal is to raid bases. But, why raid bases when you can just get the stuff at known locations easily. And raiding bases, though enjoyable, never netted anything more than some schematics that I had gotten from crates.
(edit) 5. I picked up both of the +flop gain skills, never saw an increase in flops. Still getting as low as 10 from boxes, and 8 on the low end from killing baddies.
The only PvP would be to troll people, because there's no actual "need" to break into someone else's base. The only real valuable thing are flops, and you'll so rarely find a base that someone has stored flops in a container, you'll actually spend more time looking and breaking into bases, than if you'd have just run around gathering stuff.
It seems to me that it's just pointless to break into bases, and it gets tedious spending 3800 flops for 1 skill, only to look and see you need about another 30,000 to get top end stuff. Oh, and if you keep your base loaded up with all the machinery, that'll eat through your flop balance FAST. So Just keep everything boxed up in materials, bring it out, use it, break it back down.
Anyway, the only people I would really recommend this game to, are ones that just want to break into bases so people log in and are frustrated that their base got levelled, even though they had nothing of value.

Firstly, let me point out that this commentery only applies to the single player experience. I have weird hours, and I live in Australia, so I have a choice between no-one to team up with or truly rubbish play. So...
Pros:
- It looks fabulous. Up-close boulder textures are a bit iffy, but that's about the worst thing I have to say about the graphics.
- It really does feel desolate and lonely for the single player - which is perfect considering the setting.
- Those freakin' spider drones' AI is sneaky and vindictive. I had one run away from me, circle around the building and jump me from behind. Also, being small and low profile, they will often escape your notice untilthey start attacking.
Cons:
- The amount of grind required is ridiculous. I can't speak to the higher ranks because I invariably got killed before being able to afford even the second tier of just one advancement path, but in the early game you will spend almost every moment trying to avoid starvation and/or asphyxia.
- When you die (not if), all your stuff stays where you fell - which seems pretty reasonable to me. My issue is that you respawn with just a 3D printer and whatever you managed to learn last life - and depleted food an oxygen. If it wasn't hard enough first time around...
- If you do manage to make it long enough to build some sort of structure, keeping it will break you. FLOPs are hard enough to come by as a solo player, and maintenance on your building is in FLOPs - so anything bigger than a shoebox means you will never learn anything again. (Yes, there are FLOP events. I didn't manage to make it to the door for spiders, worms, and cloaked somethings. More gun-hands would help, but a solo is toast.)
I like the look and feel of this game, and I love the premise. At this point though, for me, it's more of an exercise in frustration and tedium than a source of fun.

So I got the game for me and my cousin to spend some "together time" in a game that reminded us of a singleplayer only game that we both love - SUBNAUTICA, and found myself in a space RUST. I got raided on a PVE server.
So I know the game is in early accsess and I know the game has no storry yet (or ever will) but that is not wat i got the game for. I got it for the exploration and grinding of a survivel with the hopes to have the chance to invite someone else in my otherwise lifeless world.
As a conclusion: The game looks very good and very promising at this stage, and I just hope the devs will not forget about the people who do not want to play a game with the whole world, but with a friend or two, and no one else to spoil it.

Awesome game.
I've played MoM for about 11hrs now. It's got a little bit of a learning curve (Once you find out your 3d printer is everything, you'll be alright), but a friend and I were able to get some awesome times going.
The Good:
-Graphics are cool
-Concept is amazing
-AI is very diverse
-Many cool little features/ quirks which I was suprised to see in an indie early access game for example, a skilltree system, hidden stashes, and very in depth crafting.
-For an early access game, the bugs are minimal
-Lots of fun!
The Bad:
-The game is a little grindy. Using the currency FLOPS, you must be able to research everything, and keep your base upkeep going.
-At first, food is scarce. Until you start looting more, you're dying from starvation constantly
-Although the bugs are minimal, they're still there.
-Gunplay could use some serious work. Half the time you hit your slot key, and pull out your 3d printer, or aim and your gun model dissapears.
-Current disconnect system could use work. Although combat logging is no longer possible, people can avoid pvp entirely by dc'ing as soon as someone comes over the horizon. This is very frustrating, especially at the events where pvp is encouraged.
Of course, this is just week one (Of early access no less). I expect most of these issues will be fixed within the coming weeks.
Overall, despite the negatives, I highly recommend you give this game a try. As a fan of the survival genre, this new experience is exactly what I needed.

I personally love this game. The look and feel is what I want. However, there are some issues with this game:
Great:
Look and feel
Price
Base building mechanics
Character animation
Different types of servers (Private,PVE,PVP)
Potential for improvement:
Bigger map and new locations, the actual locations bores everyone quickly
More slots and flops for the next season, starting all over again is...
Cars, we don't want to walk for hours
Random blueprints (hate it)
A few bugs
Note: I'm playing this game from the beginning and can tell you, it was buggy as hell in the beginning, but the devs fixed a lot!
Hope, that game will not die.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!
No matter how tempted you are, no matter how much you think the good reviews might mean it's ok, IT'S NOT.
The devs have abandoned it. There is noone on the servers. You can't save your progress. You can't even pause your progress. Absolutely atrocious that Steam still has this on their store.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!

Update: I had to change my review to NOT RECOMMENDED. Because of the horrible PVP snow area which you cannot change to PVE even on your own private "PVE" server. This is just plain ridiculous. No PVE players like the snow area because it's PVP even on a private "PVE" server, and there's absolutely no way to change it. So I cannot recommend the game because of this. I am a PVE player. I have no interest at all in PVP games. The PVE mode even on your own personal private server is fake PVE. A bad trick from the developers. Once PVE players advance to the snow area, they are forced into PVP and end up hating the game.
Here's my previous review before I found out that I cannot change the snow area to PVE even on my own private server:
I absolutely love this game.
This game is similar to Ark Survival, Conan Exiles, Stranded Deep, Subnautica, and No Man's Sky. If you like those games, you will probably like Memories of Mars. I rate it 5 stars, same as the others mentioned.
I found this game originally on the PS4 and got addicted to it. Was playing everyday for several weeks. I decided to buy it again for the PC because there's more options available to the player (graphics settings, controller options, private local server add on, keyboard & mouse support, etc).
I've already put about 500 hours into the PS4 version, and just started using the PC version a short while ago.
The PC version is almost identical to the PS4 version. There are however many more options available. But while playing, it's very hard to tell the difference between the 2 platforms.
I am currently running my own free Memories of Mars local server on my PC. I set it to 100% PVE, and I am admin, so I can be God essentially in the game on the PC if I like, something that's not possible on the PS4 without renting an expensive server.
I love the AI combat with the robots. Very cool. Very well done.
The graphics are fantastic. So much detail was put into the graphics. Wow!
I love building in this game. The building mechanics in this game are by far the best I've ever seen in any game. And there are no bugs with the building mechanics. It's rock solid. It's so easy to build in this game. You see a hologram of the walls, doors, windows, etc., before you commit to building them. This means you can change designs, without losing any resources. Once you're satisfied with the hologram, you can start building it. Fantastic. The way they implemented the building mechanics is so natural. It's a breeze. No other game I know of is this easy to build in. I absolutely love it. If you're into building as much as I am, you will love the building mechanics. The game could use some more building components though, such as chairs, beds, tables, etc. Conan Exiles, has way more building components than Memories of Mars has, but building in Conan is a little buggy, and a bit difficult compared to Memories of Mars.
The game music is so so. I usually turn off the music.
The sound effects are fantastic. Very well done.
There are 2 things however that I don't like about the game, but it's still a 5 star game.
First off, there is no offline single player mode. All the other games I have in this genre offer an offline single player mode. However, there is a free local server you can install as an add on to the game, so technically you can play offline single player if you install your own private local server. This is what I do now. I almost never play on any of the official servers anymore. And the reason for that is in my next gripe about the game.
The next HUGE thing I don't like is related to the official servers. They are an ungodly mix of PVE and PVP unfortunately. This is a total mess. This is probably the single biggest negative of the game. In general, the PVE players hate the PVP areas of the game (the snow area and the random flop event areas), and the PVP players hate the PVE sections, thinking it's boring because they can't attack people there. PVE and PVP players, in general, do not get along. Why in the world did the developers mix the two? This is total absolute insanity in my opinion. They should offer 100% PVE official servers and 100% PVP official servers. They should not mix the two! If you look at the reviews you can see a lot of people upset about this.
That being said, I don't have the issue with the official servers now, since I run my own free private server. With that option, I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE GAME.
This is currently my favorite game. I highly recommend this game!

ABANDONED, dont waste your money, if you want a space crafting game thats similar to ark play empyrion galactic survival, that game is class, you get to build your own ships, build bases, hover crafts, and explore a galaxy and it has single player or you can play online with pvp or pve, you also have quests and the modding community has created tehir own quests/missions, back to this game, it had so much potential but these days devs want to make a bit of money and then just cash out, there should be a law with these abandoned games, give us our money back or half of it, or let other devs complete the game, getting sick of this genre of games now though, its like devs always abandon these types and these open world survival are my favourite type, so hard to get one that suits me now haha i will not recommend it until it gets picked back up, because its actually a good game but when it only has online only, it is a fail, at last finish and add a single player mode and make the map bigger, cus its rather small

I really liked this game at first. I could easily give it 4/5 stars for story, mechanics and artwork. The way this dev team handled PvP in the early stage gave non-pvpers a fair and honest way to progress their characters in the face of otherwise oppressive odds. Until we got to the top tier where the door was slammed irrevocably in our faces. At the final tier of progression quests and gear are locked behind pvp.
I'm tired of this kind of hierarchical game design which overwhelmingly favors pvp. PvP is an excuse for really bad, anti social behavior. And when progression is locked behind a pvp wall then those who can pvp opt for the laziest of all gameplay: the stalking and destruction of fellow players with far less gear, stats and skills than themselves.
I won't be cannon fodder. I have uninstalled this game and i won't be recommending it.
