oh no eggman took over the world except that part doesnt actually matter and instead you get to run through green hill for the 12002385034975th time
(although the modding scene on this game is ok and there's like 2 and a half minutes worth of good levels so maybe worth picking up when on sale for $10)

Pros:
-Feels pretty good to play. There's not a bunch of gimmicky stuff interrupting the flow and cluttering the controls. Level design is pretty straightforward. The subtle differences between the three playable characters adds some variety without, again, interrupting the flow much.
-All of Sonic's dumb little friends are around. Story takes itself too seriously. Yes, this is a pro.
-Episode Shadow uses his music from the 2005 game.
Cons:
-Ridiculously easy and short. I was getting S-ranks by accident on my first runs through levels. And I was playing on "hard" difficulty. Episode Shadow is only 3 short levels.
-Chaos is in this but only in cut scenes.
-Congrats on finishing a level. Now press A 10 times in a row to look at several pieces of clothing.
Overall, playing this just feels better than Colors and Lost World. So, qualified positive review. Just don't be surprised when you finish this in one sitting.

I bought this game out of sheer curiosity since I had seen it receive a lot of hate on the internet.
I honestly enjoyed my time with it.
Is it without flaws? Ofc not.
But can you still have fun? certainly.
I genuinely can't bring myself to dislike this game.
The inclusion of an avatar is pretty nice. And I like that they gave the avatar some backstory. Some motivation to want to take down Infinite.
Speaking of... Infinite is a really cool villain and is executed well imo. I love stage 16 so much because throughout the level you sense Infinite being behind you and mess around with you. He feelslike a genuine threat.
The soundtrack is amazing as is usual with Sonic games. The only thing I hated was modern Sonic just existing. He's a little too cocky. I prefer classic Sonic. (Btw Classic Sonic stages are a joy to play through)
Good thing a Mod exists which replaces Sonic with Silver. (Or ig you could play as Shadow as well)
I'm hoping more people give this game a chance cuz it certainly doesn't deserve that mixed rating.
(Also for some reason saves don't work on steam... I had to turn off cloud saving which is a bummer.)

This has to be the most cynical cashgrab that Sonic Team has ever dumped into the trough that probably could only entertain the tiniest of todders. It's basically a 40 dollar Sonic Speed Simulator but you can't even decide what direction you want to go or which characters you want to play. Even the infamous Sonic 06 has some things I prefer over this game, such as having content, levels, characters that do things, some laughable story beats, the usual bangers that are characteristic of this franchise, and it even has idle animations (this game doesn't). Forces however is far better at producing melatonin and drool in its players. The only mercy you are offered in this banal gauntlet is that it's over just after the Steam refund window ends, thank you Iizuka-san.
Sonic's 3D levels are uneventful straightaways with endless fodder you lay waste to with your plentiful boost meter, some occasional homing attack chains and at most, negligible 1.5 second diverging forks that immediately reconnect. The avatar's levels are only distinguished by a spray and pray flamethrower and grapple points you hardly interface with. Classic Sonic's levels are watered down from previous entries significantly and I struggle to recall anything in them. All three are punctuated by pointless radio chatter from characters who do nothing meaningful in the story and sometimes a high-five followed by a massacre of Eggman's armies requiring basically no input from the player at all.
The only purpose the story premise serves is to make the empty promise that something might actually happen in the game. Past villains are teased in the trailers, but they are merely illusions created by a jewel, and exist solely in one scene to be shoved into the trailer. The actual villain gets walloped by Shadow before the game even starts in some free and completely benign, unremarkable DLC levels and makes no impact on the story. Sonic is captured, and instead of doing anything with this idea at all, he is freed minutes later. Eggman conquers the entire world, and it is almost entirely represented on a globe in a mission select screen that turns from red to blue. Sonic's friends form a resistance to fight Eggman's armies, but instead of utilizing this SATAM/Archie Comics inspired set up, they merely stand in the background of a cutscene or two and this is represented only through the voices of their (never ceasing) talking heads in the corner of your screen, while you hold forward or right until the colorful levels end in about 1 minute and 45 seconds on average. Keep in mind the Dreamcast games went through the effort to give Sonic, his friends and his foes each specific motivations, and had them each contribute to the story in their own way and have character arcs, like Tails learning to face Eggman without Sonic's guidance or finishing the fight after the hedgehog's brief apparent death in SA2. 06 at least had some redeemable moments with Shadow and Silver travelling through time, and Shadow completing a multigame character arc where he chooses to continue on a heroic path despite the world's possible rejection of him in the future. The villain of this game just flees upon his failure to never be heard from again.
Even the music in this game is incredibily forgettable and overshadowed by basically every other game in the franchise. The only other notable feature in this game is the Avatar. You can basically create a Sonic OC that can join Sonic and friends on this adventure. Instead of really taking this idea to its maximum potential and finally giving the Sonic fanbase the tools to go crazy and bring their ridiculous trademark fan characters to life, it's unfortunately very underbaked and doesn't really embrace the concept enough. It'd be a great concept if you could actually choose the abilities of your character, make some kind of falcon with flight and ability to create gusts, or a dog that can burrow underground and bite or tackle enemies, or cats that can claw at foes and indulge in expert agility are just a few examples. You could even add a basic dialogue selection feature so you can give your OC a little personality whether they be a brooding edgelord or a happy-go-lucky recruit eager to prove themselves to Sonic and friends. It's clearly a shallow half baked feature, just put in the game so that it can bait reactions from influencers and have journalists write click bait articles about it.
That's why I can't help but double down, this has to be the indisputable worst mainline Sonic game, with basically no redeemable qualities. It's just disguised as an acceptable product due to it's lack of apparent bugs and it's effortless sleepy gameplay. You at least had to interface and engage with 06 as a game to properly play it. It was an ambitious game stripped of its resources that at least had the attitude to add a white psychic hedgehog from the future who brought something distinct, even if unfinished, to the gameplay. It at least had personality and people who had the best of intentions behind it's development. That turd left a permanent cultural print on the entire franchise forever with several popular let's plays, a viral fan dub and even a Unity Remake to try to harvest as much of the game's potential as possible. No one remembers basically anything about this piece of $40 garbage.
