A sequel to the original rage game (could Spelunker technically be a souls-like, even?). It's pretty good, though I do have some gripes with it:
- Multiplayer is pretty much dead. This means a lot of the items, some achievements, some map secrets, heck, even just a good amount of the experience -- all of that is gone. The game is "playable" in single player, but I won't lie -- it feels hollow. The game was clearly designed with more than one player in mind for the best possible experience in a lot of ways.
- The game's difficulty has definitely been nerfed. Granted, the classic Spelunker "I FUCKING HATE YOU AND HOPE YOU DIE" aura is kinda still here, but it feels like it's taken a bit of a backseat. Also, Rope Assist from Spelunker HD is back -- and you're forced to use it. While I think Rope Assist is a good thing, at the same time, I still feel as if it should've been a choice like it was on Spelunker HD.
- This game clearly has roots in the gacha game Spelunker World, and it shows. Of course, you're not going to be gambling your money away anymore as the folks at Tozai decided to turn World into an actual game -- that "actual game" version being this game, but the remnants are still very much there.
- There's a... "story" I guess? Not a bad thing, but I've barely been paying attention to it. Sometimes I don't even know what the heck is going on tbh.
If you can get this on sale, I feel like a fun time can be had -- but for the typical price of $30-40, I'd only buy if you breathe Spelunker games (which likely means you're a masochist)
Now with that out of the way -- I want a port of Spelunker HD to PC. That would be wonderful. The likelihood of us getting that is pretty minimal, but I can dream. This is good and all, but I still think Spelunker HD is better and I'd really want to be able to buy it on PC. I'd best want a port of the PS4/Switch "Deluxe" version but I'd take anything, really.
