There isn't much introduction to the Koei's ROTK series here (in Steam review section). What is it that you don't know or suddenly interested in an almost 20 years old game about Three Kingdoms Chinaland? The only way you found this retro Sangokushi game is you're looking for it specifically, or you found some reddit post raving about how the OG VIII, X, or XI are much better entry compare to the recent ROTK games. I have no specific quarrel about how the newer installment doesn't quite live up to others expect. The newer iteration of both ruler style play and officer play does have any quality of life and official english translation to appreciate. None quite, however, can match the old school hand-drawn pixel charm. For some reason, this is the only ROTK I can felt like the living and breathing world. Immersive soundtrack for the era. Some of the gameplay can be quite dated. Everything just clicked for the best Roleplay oriented gameplay (Officer Play) Koei's ROTK series can offer to-date. By this I mean, ROTK X not the best or most realistic RPG system objectively, but it's definitely the most feels good to play. Only to be held back by a not so smart AI, especially in battle. The AI is serviceable but still not very good. Cao Cao, however, is too OP in anytime beyond Dong Zhou's death (which is seemingly a tradition for every ROTK games). As a time of my writing this review, I have sunk 50 hrs into this almost 20 years old game. Just don't think too much about it and go nuts in Three Kingdoms Era Chinaland as your own custom character. Rise to the rank, supporting Big Dong an imperial nods to be a big boss of China, accumulate your own power based in the meantime, betraying your lard-filled boss in the name of Han Restoration, just to usurp the Emperor Xian title 20 years later, ending the 400 years rules of Han and becoming Emperor... OR you can just play as "sword-for-hire" doing quest here and there, becoming sworn brother with Zhao Zilong, saving Liu Bei from getting his arse kick around China from time-to-time. I'm a Emperor Ma Daddy and Ma Boi enjoyer. China World is your Oyster.
