"Exit: A Biodelic Adventure" is very considerable and noteworthy achievement for the BIOPUNK genre! There aren't many Biopunk games but there are a few notable examples: "Prototype (2019)" gave us an action game using Biopunk elements, which proved it can be cool. "Scorn (2022)" gave us horror in a Biopunk setting, reminiscent of David Cronenberg and H.R. Geiger. But the sub-genre is capable of much more than being simply typecast as horror. "Athanasy (2022)" gave us a visual novel dealing with mutation and survival in a bleak dystopia. - I would say "Exit: Biodelic Adventure" and "Athanasy" are, at this moment, the flagships of the Biopunk genre !!! The story, characters and writing are superb. Both funny and biologically scientific. The point & click gameplay is built on Moon Logic. Usually that is a very bad sin of the genre, but in this weird "alien" game it is surprisingly the perfect fit ! This world and its technologies work on their own set of rules which are indeed logical but not to us humans. By clicking around, investigating and theorizing we can come to a solution, as long as we start imagining ourselves as part of this world and understand that we are not meant to understand. Even people with a degree in chemistry and biology will be dumbfounded by this. We too are blind newcomers in an world alien to us. Some parts were so illogically tough, it was impossible to solve on your own. There is a hint system which you can use once per minute (dafuq). The time block was not appreciated, we don't need to be policed like that. Using the hint system is already a great frustration for enjoyers of the P&Click genre. Doesn't help that this game is very indie and fresh, meaning no guides or videos about it on the internet. We are diving in blind. The only part that was OUT OF PLACE were the tarot cards, occultist pseudo-science and unreasonable philosophical babble that conflicted with the whole biopunk theme. (Why add it!?) I don't care if the author is into this stuff, but there is a time and place for things. One must know when to stop and say no. Sometimes saying less is more. The indie developer is Russian* and therefore much into literature and philosophy. But it did not help adding it to the game, only made it seem pretentious. We are already thrown into an alien world with alien rules, we don't need Shakespeare interjecting his "Doth Thy majesty doeTH thEE to be or not to be~" stfu. The art in the game has an indie feel and a Dr. Seuss style to it, which is not bad, but I saw concept art by Andrey Kovalev that gave the game a more mature style like "Prototype" or Zerg from "Starcraft". What happened there? Didn't come to an agreement? This game has been in development for a long time, the earlier builds look like cheap itchio games but the blueprint for the levels can already be seen there. The developer is heavily into Biopunk, so this game is a passion project and that can be felt. This genre is underrated and misunderstood as are all great things. But its time to shine will come, same way it did for the Cyberpunk sub-genre, as long as such games pave the way for Biopunk. Great concept, beautiful game. I will miss talking to Ear, Mouth and Nose. They helped keep my face when drinking the zhirble ;) Despite the flaws, I would recommend the game.
