What a shame, such potential in this game yet the controls are so bad, Fighting is terrible, it's such a shame as I can see this being an amazing game... But I guess it's abandbed as can't even do a duel... Lol Sorry but it's a no for me.

This is, of course, very early in Early Access, so this review should be taken in that light. OVERVIEW: Right now, this game is a fairly limited sandbox, and nothing else. But, that sandbox is pretty solid (I’ve yet to have a CTD, though I’ve experienced a few in-game bugs that are annoying), so if castle building is your thing, I recommend a buy. If not, then I’d suggest waiting and seeing how development proceeds before dipping a toe in. COMPARE/CONTRAST: Thus far, this game (“WoC”) and Medieval Engineers (“ME”) are playing in the same sandbox (pun intended) – but with some important differences, which I will highlight briefly. ME has significantly more customizability when it comes to building castles because it gives you full control at the block level. WoC has significantly less control at the block level, but unlike ME has significantly more pre-built structures to drop into the game (in ME you must either build and save those structures themselves, or input them from other users via the Workshop). So if you want to drop straight in and start building castles, WoC has the edge. If you want every block of every wall and tower built to your precise specifications, then ME has the edge. BUGS: On the bug front, I’ve had very few actually. The primary one annoying me at the moment is that once you save the game, the terrain tool no longer seems to work, including the ability to add and remove trees and vegetation, which inevitably means a tree will be right in the middle of where you want to build, and I have yet to find a way to get the terrain tool working again. Reloading the game does not restore the tool, so this is my number one cause of rage-quits thus far. FEATURES IMPLEMENTED: Bare bones for the moment – as noted above, basically just a limited sandbox. But lot of features (including a huge number of additional blocks/structures) are planned, and I look forward to them. More importantly, a dedicated PvP ‘destroy castles with your own army while other people try to destroy yours’ mode is planned – and if properly implemented is likely to be seriously fun. So stay tuned on that front. FEATURES NEEDED: A few features need to be implemented or tweaked as they currently limit enjoyment even at this early stage of development. 1) Camera Controls: Fix the camera controls. These controls are amongst the most clunky I’ve experienced – which is absolutely unforgivable in a sandbox building game. Having to use the keyboard to look and to move makes it very difficult to get anything done. A simple WASD binding for movement, two keys bindings for vertical movement up and down, and mouse control for view/direction is what I expect in this type of game, and the lack of the same is a major problem for me. I want to look around with the mouse without needing to push the spacebar. 2) Block Limit: Right now the block limit is waaaaaay too low to building anything like the complexity needed to compete with ME, and I have yet to find a way to raise it. Raising the block limit is an immediate and necessary fix (perhaps putting an optional limit in for lower spec systems). 3) Maps: Both maps are ‘realistic’, which means they’re very difficult to build on in the current bare-bones implementation. The mountain and highlands maps show off terrain features, but if I want to try out different castle builds, it is very difficult to do so on hilly maps (especially with the terrain tool apparently broken). Therefore, I strongly urge the developers to release a simple flat map for us to play around on in addition to the existing maps. 4) Building: having the ability to copy/paste all connected block to the point ‘clicked’ like ME would be a very nice feature. Having to rebuild each tower piece by piece can be very annoying. If someone wants to, then they can – but it would be nice to have the option to copy/paste/save a particular structure for re-use (and perhaps sharing on the Workshop if/when that feature is implemented). Also, if possible, the ability to build diagonally rather than just by the cardinal directions is needed as well (assuming it hasn’t been implemented and I just haven’t figured it out yet). Speaking of which… 5) Tutorial: the game is complex enough that a tutorial would be a good feature to think about implementing sooner rather than later. Those first two hours are the most important for ‘selling’ the game and right now the first two hours are too painful of trial-and-error tinkering to figure out what works (and what doesn’t). CONCLUSION: A very stable sandbox, but with limited features and clunky controls. If you love building castles, then its worth a buy right now. Otherwise, I’d wait and see how development proceeds. Based on the pace of development thus far, this is likely to be a fairly long early access period – but development has been very positive so this is definitely a game that I would bookmark and return to in six months, even if you’re not devoted enough of castellan to buy it at this stage of development.

Short version: For something so Super-early access, I'm having fun. But again... Super Early Access, so understand you won't be fighting anything anytime soon. Still, this game is promising. You can start by building little Palisaides or additions to your starting house, or ignore the house and go straight to stone Ramparts and towers. There are available Battlements for your Ramparts complete with Machicolations (murder-holes), etc, and for now you're just starting with an ungodly (nearly unlimited) amount of resources. The Palace isn't available yet, but some of the DonJon (Rapunzel-like Dungeon in the Sky) options seem to combine well with housing elements for a palatial feel in a keep area I've been creating. I've so far built the fortifications for a city and have barely touched my resource count. Wood houses very appropriately start with stone foundations... all in all I'm impressed. A couple things I initially thought were buggy turned out to be me not understanding the interface... Such as when you left-click to get rid of something, only the placement of your MOUSE matters (which is counter to putting something down, as you right-click when the wireframe is in place). The mouse looks like a little quill. So I couldn't figure out why there were some items I couldn't remove very easily... it's because I was removing them the wrong way. There are a couple minor bugs at the moment... for instance when I click on certain menu options (to select DonJon layouts from the menu, for instance), It doesn't take me right there, but when I hit escape, then cancel the main menu, I'm in the menu I wished to be in. More quirks than problems though. Oh, hold shift to speed move. I was pointing myself up, floating around, then taking forever to go across my city area.

There are some issues with overlapping (i.E. parts of roofs clip into other houses) and there are still some bugs, but overall a real promising start for the "build" part of the game. Can't wait for more content and the "siege" part of the game. Only issue I really noticed is that terrain sometime "swallows" blocks and makes it really hard to delete them or "fills up" closed off rooms if you build something near the house.

I was really hopeful for this game. I bought it when it was in very early development and have seen some good changes. However, nothing has been done in jut about a year now. I see people still playing it and building awesome looking castles but I can't seem to get a single NPC to work properly before running into various bugs or running out of materials and not being able to obtain more. There are no tutorials and no tooltips to help with what the graphics in the menus are actually for. This game has great potential and I wish I could even just take over development because it has an awesome foundation, awesome graphics, and neat art. Hopefully the devs pick it back up and bring it to glory but currently it is not worth the money to purchase and many are asking if it is abandoned.

I bought this game to support the developers and that's it. Its pretty much an abandoned game but from what I have come to understand is that they are working on a different version of this game being more simplified and streamlined. The developer said that the new game would be given out for free to those who bought this game. I dont know if that will happen or not, so dont buy this game thinking that. But if you want a castle building game in free edit mode then i think this might scratch the itch, but you can only really play free edit mode. There is another mode that you have limited resources at the start and villagers will come to your settlement as you build up, but its broken with the resource gathering so once your out of your starting resources then its pretty much over. Which is sad because that is the kind of mode that i most enjoy. Buy it only if you want to have hope and give a small team some money which they may or may not use for development of games. Otherwise dont buy because the likely hood of this game being finished is slim to none.

A build game that doesn't want you to build, you can't even free form a basic L shaped house in the housing section because the walls do not connect and fit at the 90 degree corners, you have to use a pre built wall for the house end. Almost impossible to find a spot where the terrain will allow you to build. I think too much time was spent on making the models and textures look nice and not enough on the actual controls. This game is far from complete and should not be selling at it's current price. I feel like I've been conned.

Game is postponed indefinitely. It doesn't have everything needed. One day it'll be good, or at least it'll be opened to modders, and then it'll be good. And on that day, I'll recommend it.

Overall currently the only gameplay you can do is place assets and build a castle, there is a terrain editor that allows you to raise/lower terrain and place a few plants but is currently clunky and building mode lags and is very much unoptimized. As I own Unreal Engine and if I get bored can build castles and tinker, I'm not sure how someone releasing a pile of placeable assets in Steam EA even qualifies as a game? As very few EA games ever make it I would strongly reccomend against purchasing Wold of Castles if you do not have money to support the World of Castles could be dream or are looking for a game you can actually play as CURRENTLY THERE IS NO PLAYABLE CONTENT only a partial castle building demo. Having said that the idea of World of Castles looks neat so I am going to tuck this one away and check on the development process every few months. Currently The game is as follows You can from start screen choose the following options... 1.Change your Flag there are different designs to choose from and you can change the colors as well. Everything is preset but there a plenty of options stripes, checkers and then you can overlay the flag with an insignia like a cross or lion 2.Customize your Marshals there are 3 separate branches to edit currently for your marshal each giving you a limted number of points to utilize. It should be noted that a Marshal can NOT be played or utilized in an actual game or scenerio outside of the character creation screen. --Character appearance and Equipment you can pick the following.. a) Facial Hair. giving you different beards and mustaches b) Helmet. gives you 14 different helms with varying armor stats c)Chest. Gives you 5 different armor options d)Gloves. Gives you 4 different options e)Legs. Gives you 2 armor options f)Feet. Gives you 5 different options g)Weapons. gives you 26 different options to choose with varying types and looks spears, swords, maces, axes etc.. no ranged h)Shield. 5 different shields the 6th option being no shield. then a small icon on bottom to change the color of your hair.. --Character skills There are 3 skill trees a) Magnificence. 13total skills. this gives your peons buffs like def attack stam etc b)Defiance. 13total skills. Basically your tank attributes c) Valor. 14 total skills. Basically your Attack Attributes ---Armor Icon This is not implemented yet as there is only an icom and leads you to a blank empty page of nothingness 3. Set your Game gives you the following option tabs Overall, Graphic, Keys, Sounds 4.Improve Your Castle This loads a map with a simple premade house where you can edit and build a castle, pressing tab takes you to a screen filled with icons Icons currently clickable with placable assets keep in mind this is EA and some icons only have 1 or 2 placeable assets Miltia, Footmen, Battlements, Strong Ramparts, Pallisades, Platforms, Roofings, Housing,Religion, Bergfried, Staircases, Defense Devices, Gatehouses, Wall Equipment, Landscaping Icons currently greyed out (future) Marshals, Archers, Calvary, Stone Ramparts, Wooden Castle, Donjou, Round Towers, Traps, Military, Armoury, Painting, Production, Civillian, Palace

DON'T PURCHASE THIS ABANDONNED GAME! Purchased this "game" yesterday for 26 euros. 26 euros! Would have been really nice to have had a warning from Steam telling me that this project has been abandonned by the developers. Why don't Steam warn their customers of this??? If only it was playable, but it aint. I have "played" 6 hours now and it hasn't even been possible for me to lay the foundation to a castle without experiencing severe malfunctions and developer consoles nearly impossible to remove so I can continue. The functions comes without any documentation at all. I Googled for a website or any other help, but couldn't find any. The game isn't able to save my edits properly. I cannot express my dissappointment of this purchase and the mindset of the developers behind this game. Run away. Fast. Don't make the same mistake as I and see your 26 euros go down the drain! Even the greatest idea is worthless if badly executed. Execution is everything! Hammer Games should sell World of Castles to a company that are able to execute the idea the way it should...
