As much as I want to believe in universal reconciliation in the volleyball afterlife, Lana deserves to burn in volleyball Hell.

I think there are a lot of good things with this game. Most of the characters are likable (though one of them was very hard to connect with, maybe it was just me), the story is engrossing (though after one playthrough I found myself skipping scenes I had already seen) and the art is decent (though the often motionless stills of characters can be a bit grating at times). Are there better VNs out there... absolutely, but I enjoyed this game quite a bit. The only minor issue I have is that I do not believe that English is the author's first language as some of the word choices were a bit... odd? (i.e. Team Alchemy when I believe they meant Chemistry) There are also a few grammatical and spelling errors but not really enough to detract from the overall experience.

Been a while since I played a Winter Wolves game. Forgot how good they can be. In this one, Kayla is leaving her backwoods poor county to go to Asgard. College, not the realm of the gods. Though considering the change of wealth level… might as well be. (Seriously, she comes from a school where the computers were old and mostly broken [or hacked], to a place where EVERYTHING is computerized.) Technically, she got a scholarship, even though she was so far behind everyone else on campus… maybe, she was given one as a public relations move. She moves in with her childhood friend, Lana, who… is not doing so well. In fact, within a day or two, she drops her captain of the volleyball team gig in Kayla’s lap. Which is a bit of a pain, since the four others one the team (including Lana), don’t seem to be working well together, or for that matter most of them seem to disdain or ignore Kayla. And the one who is being friendly might have ulterior motives… Now, those four girls, plus the team’s faculty “coach” are the potential love interests. Getting to the point where you can begin their individual romances is tricky. Keeping them locked-in might be even more so. Because you will be wooing them at the same time as trying to keep the team focused on winning. Not to mention there are a few outside issues that might try and interrupt. Very good game. Fully recommend.

This VN is A lot of fun,, Lana is just horrid, she can change a bit. If try for her she changes alot. Rika is cute and fun, And is a romance that needs gentleness, Jade is cute and has hidden desires but is a rewarding romance to. Zoe is nuts,, super fit, but nuts, this is a romance for those who like madness and pain and who want to be dominated. Having Now done The Lana path, she does come great in the end, though you say friend with benefits but Lana does act more like a girlfriend in the end, which surprised me to be honest. Managed to get Emily,, It IS reliant on getting 2 Things correct.. The relationship has it's challenges but also has great times. You see the story from all angles if you date each girl on each play through. Though some are similar. Zoe shocked me a bit, though I half expected it,, Jade was sweet but a huge view of a part of the story from the inside..which you saw from a kinda view on a sort of inside with Zoe.. The CG collection can Remain incomplete as there are 2 left for me,, One is the Sex Scene with the female reporter after loosing the Halloween game, and the other is for having all the CG's. I am not going to loose a game to make things even harder lol I have played this so many times now. I often end up with Rika or Jade again,, but have forced myself to do the other routes again. Zoe's does have funny moments as she is a nut job, she is still like your Character Was, you have grown, she has just got worse. Lana's one is a Real battle until just after you had to stay with Rika. You then become the girl you used to be for a while in defence of Lana. It is quite funny to. It involves a Wrench :p If you like Yuri you will enjoy this. Even if Not a Yuri lover,, A romance lover will like the Stories. Especially Rika's Story = 10 (Excellent) Graphics/CG = 10 (Scenery and CG's all great) Music = 8 (pretty good but I usually mute music) Yuri = 10 (Pure Wall to Wall Yuri) Ease of use = 10 (All controls as expected for a VN) Over All = 10 (Though Music is an 8, I cant fault it because it doesn't really match my taste) Even Though Winter Wolves make other great VN's I keep coming back to this one as I love it so much. I have even asked if he will do a follow up,, but I feel it will never come, though he said he may now. Lets Hope, more Rika and Jade, what more can I wish for.

An interesting western yuri VN that focuses on the struggles of being a rural lesbian in the south pre-legalization of gay marriage in 2015 that moves into the upper-class city for university and maintaining friendships and team harmony with strangers and a distant friend for a sport casually played by the protagonist. Rika best girl. For complaints...Lana in her own route I actually really liked but in every other route is very hard to not find unlikable and it is rather annoying that being a doormat is basically how you win her route, and there's a lot of mentions and scenes of unwanted attention and sexual harassment from men for a yuri game which wouldn't be as bad if it was dealt a bit more into the seriousness of it and how it especially is harmful for lesbians that face such situations outside of it being something that grinds the gears of Kayla and Zoe. Noticeable typos. In some routes like Emily's the way Kayla's internal monologue is written at some points feels out of character and more like something Rika or Lana would say. Overall a 7/10 and an interesting take on the yuri genre as well as first GXG only work from Winter Wolves which created the lovely "Always Remember Me". Rika's route as well as the CG art are definitely worth buying and completing this game.

Honestly, this ones not to good. The writing can be good at time, but all the routes are disappointing. I can honestly say Ive never played a VN where all the heroines were unlikable. The steamy scenes are not worth the price of admittance, skip this one.

I'm thumbs uping the game as I enjoyed the art, the writing and generally the story. I wish there were more cg's, but this will come to my one major problem with the game. It's way too down on itself. I know the game wants to be realistic, but really, it needs to balance it out with fun times, comedy, sexy hijinks, random fun stuff instead of always being a debbie downer. And that's were the lack of cg's come from; the story is more interested in being realistic and stuff, which doesn't lead to many "sexy times" kinda events. And to be truthful, after all the downer stuff happening, I really wasn't in the mood for the more adult stuff. I was down too. But hey, I still enjoyed the game, think it's well done, the art is a highlight, just needs more of the fun time cg's and a better balance to the story. Perhaps in the sequel!

i had high hopes coming into this game, i love previous winter wolves games and a lesbian visual novel is right up my alley... too bad i was incredibly disappointed. the art is.... not very good, the art in cut scenes are great! but the art throughout most of the novel is sub par. this does not bother me too much however, what does is the writing and the main character. there are not very many choices and when there are, may times there is not an actual choice. (SPOILER) in the part of the game where you are living with Rika because LANA temporarily kicked you out you have two "choices" one to go back and live with Lana wh is a shitty person or two to say no and that you will continue living with Rika. well if you chose to continue living with Rika the MC will decide that no, you don't get that choice and she is going to go back with Lana anyway. not only that but the MC just sucks, she is written like she is supposed to be some badass who stands up for herself.... but she doesn't. and when she does she almost immediately backs down. Lana her supposed best friend treats her like utter crap and yet Kayla allows her to do so and even stands up for her... why? Lana offers nothing, i get she is going through stuff but that is not an excuse to be toxic to literally everyone. i despise that character. another large issue i have is that the writing is so rapey at times, the girls are treated like props and are consistently harassed by men in the game and they do nothing about it, even their teacher just tells them to endure it and move on, like? no? that's not okay and it is incredibly annoying. it feels like almost every second the MC is being harassed by a male character and just takes it. i would not recommend this game.

Volleyball Heaven is Winter Wolves' first entirely yuri game that isn't a spinoff of an otome game. I've bought a bunch of Winter Wolves games before and admit that some of my favourite game romances are from their previous titles. Winter Wolves games tend to be above average for visual novel writing and this game is no exception. Going into it however, expectations may have to be adjusted a bit. The game has no simulation or RPG elements at all and is strictly a choice based visual novel. The narrative is still fairly meaty helping to justify its higher price relative to other visual novels. This game is a notch more cynical than other yuri games or other Winter Wolves games. There is really only one romantic route in this game where there's no major strings or caveats attached to the relationship. Routes are varied but all other routes are in varying ways dysfunctional. There's generally one sex scene for every route and I'd say they're slightly above average for visual novel sex scenes. Notable trigger warning for:
Sexual harassment in some scenes. Also, the threat of r*** in the Kayla/Jade route even though no actual r*** will occur regardless of choices.
So how did I like the game? Well, it’s definitely a fresh take on the yuri visual novel genre which I definitely appreciate even though I don't know how I'd react if I played another game that was just as cynical. It threads choice difficulty nicely, in that you have to put some thought into how you're treating everyone but it's not some convoluted puzzle. One of the romantic interests. the "best friend" Lana is among the most insufferable fictional characters I've ever experienced and even though I got her route over with early, I was still finding new reasons to hate her on my fourth route. In the end, I'm putting a recommendation for this game as long as you get some knowledge about what you're getting into. If you only want to experience idealistic romances, buy the game on sale and only play
Rika's
route. I guess she ends being Kayla's one true love, even if it's by default. :)
Gameplay
For the most part, Volleyball Heaven is your average visual novel; smash through text boxes until you reach the next user-prompt. There are plenty of player choices to make, however, given the length of the novel, they feel distant. Your choices will affect the protagonist's relationship with the other characters, which ultimately affects the ending and unlockable scenes. It's important to maintain good terms with all characters to maintain a high "team cohesion", allowing the cast to win volleyball games.
Story
Kayla has earned a full ride to Asgard College. She meets her childhood friend Lana. . . but she has changed. She's ashamed of her roots, and she expects Kayla to uphold her reputation has a high-class student. Lana is a member of a dysfunctional volleyball team, and every member has some problem. Little does she know, Kayla is the one to mend her broken team, and little does Kayla know, she's going to find true love.
Visuals
The titlescreen was formatted nicely, but it appeared to be somewhat fuzzy. From "Preferences", you may adjust audio, display and text preferences. Additionally, you may also activate the lewd content (which is set to "off" by default). The user-interface is serviceable. When viewing CGs in the "Gallery", the interface is hidden by default. - The Goods- The sexual content is few and far between; if you're looking for a lesbian [feck]fest, you're in for a bad night. The artwork is really, really good, but I only unlocked a few CGs after completing the game from start to finish. Expect female-on-female sexual content.
Verdict
I would wait for a light sale, but I otherwise recommend this title. It's not often I play a dramatic visual novel with wholesome moments. And lesbians! A minority in the visual novel marketplace. Uh, full length review upcoming!
Support the Wombat
<3 Follow the Wombat Trap Curator page for more reviews!
