WOW! What a game.
Barotrauma isn’t just good—it’s amazing. Two things truly carry this experience: The ambiance. Being inside the submarine feels oppressively real. The atmosphere makes you uneasy, tense... but in the best possible way. The complexity and cooperation. You must work together to survive. Whether it's fighting fires, repairing breaches, or keeping the reactor from melting down, coordination is key. The depth of the electrical and mechanical systems is incredible—if you love learning and solving problems, this is your playground. Game modes include: Sandbox (free play) Mission-based “Do one mission at a time” Submarine PvP And most importantly: The Campaign The campaign is where this game shines. It's an open world beneath the ice, where you choose your missions, trade between outposts, and face the horrifying unknown of the deep. Don’t have many friends? No worries. You can play solo with bots (they're surprisingly capable), or just grab one or two friends and explore together—there are custom subs perfect for small crews. Still worried? The Discussions tab is full of people forming new teams and looking for crewmates. If you’re unsure about buying, talk with the community first. But if you enjoy: Problem-solving Teamwork Facing the terrifying unknown Then Barotrauma will give you some of the most memorable and stressful fun you've ever had underwater.

I'll be honest: I have no idea why I would even recommend this game. I'm so bad at it. Every Campaign I start ends with my character getting dismembered. I lose every single time. After 5.1h of playing I have figured out approx. 5% of the actual gameplay. Not even tips and tutorials can save me, my crew or my submarine. And my crew is just as bad as I am: once my own brother shot me with a harpoon and then stabbed me to death with a syringe trying to save me!!! But we always have so much fun, just laughing happily and failing miserably together. Barotrauma simply fills my heart with glee.

Definitely a niche game that isn't for everyone. If you have friends to play with who don't mind games that hover at 0 for long periods before going to 100 then I whole heartedly recommend it. It's got quite a learning curve, but with time everything will suddenly click. It's slow at the beginning, but starts to pick up a bit in the second biome. By the third biome that's when I went "okay so THIS is why the game is good." Challenging, scary, and with a decent amount of depth. Not only that, but once you get bored of the vanilla game there are plenty of mods to play around with ranging from small QoL tweaks to total overhauls. While playable alone, I wouldn't recommend it. Bots are fairly competent provided they're not the Captain, or doctor, or have to fight intruders on the ship or while diving. You'll have to do everything yourself whether it be diving expeditions or clearing hostile outposts since bots in these cases are a liability. As a solo player, you'll find yourself frequently switching between the Captain and other roles as needed as though it's an RTS game. If you have a few friends, then it's a blast! With several roles to learn and several settings/mods to customize your experience you'll get several dozen hours of content AT LEAST.

This game is AMAZING. The vibes are super well done, the jobs can feel quite lack luster at times, but when you get into the specifics (especially the engineer) there is quite a lot of minute details. There is a large amount of explorable content in the base game, and I have yet to buy the DLC. The modding community is also rather large, with plenty of mods for decoration/customization, making the game more in-depth and challenging, more role-play aspects, and honestly so much more to just overhaul the game completely. The game seems to be relatively bug free, and does have a bit of a learning curve. Overall, I give this game a 9.5/10 Good solo, great with friends. Will continue to die to husk infections.
