A Silly, Smart, and Surprisingly Deep Adventure
West of Loathing is one of those games that had me grinning from the very first joke. It’s basically a stick-figure Wild West where everything is either absurd, hilarious, or both. One minute I’m having a polite conversation with a goblin in broken English, the next I’m fighting a gang of demonic cows, and somehow it all makes perfect sense. The humor isn’t just in the dialogue; it’s everywhere. Item descriptions, background signs, even the combat text had me laughing out loud more than once. And it’s not just cheap jokes either; the writing is genuinely clever and knows when to poke fun at you. Gameplay-wise, it’s super simple: walk around, talk to people, fight turn-based battles, and explore. But the game gives you so much freedom to wander and mess around. I kept ignoring the main quest just to see what strange place I’d find next, and I was constantly rewarded with some bizarre side quest or a little secret hidden in plain sight. If you like games that make you laugh, reward curiosity, and don’t take themselves too seriously, you owe it to yourself to play this one.

Frustratingly stupid. Primarily back and forth fetch quests. Repetitive combat

Tl;DR: An engaging and puzzling point-and-click adventure!
Wild Weird West, Loathing style
I played through Shadows over Loathing long before picking this one up, the wild west not exactly being something I pine over. Still, as someone who grew up with Lucky Luke and Cocco Bill comics, West of Loathing is a fun if utterly insane game. You're not in the regular wild west, fictional or historical, but in the one as exists in the Loathing setting. Meaning that, once you've created your character, played through the tutorial area and gotten a pardner, you're thrust into a world where meat is currency, cows have gone hyperdemonic and stones got attitude... among other things. Most of the inhabitants of this world, all stick figures btw, would fit right in with the Discworld Canting Crew as they're pretty much bonkers in one way or another.
Short game, many sidequests
Frankly, the main quest of getting the train company to their final destination and dealing with an old coot at the end of it isn't all that long. Reckon you can get it done in a handful of hours if you know what you're doing. But there's a ton of sidequesting to do, with varying outcomes depending on what you choose to do. Did most of them and finished in around 13 hours playtime, but if I did this or the other thing different I would probably have seen more.
Gripes and cheers
Much as I do like the game, there's a few gripes to be had. First being that keeping track of your sidequests through your pardner is cumbersome and downright useless most of the time. There's so many locales and skills/stats/etc. to keep track of that you'll want both a notepad and access to the wiki just so you can get a clue on what you need to do. You're also locked to the pardner you take along at the end of the prologue, the class you chose and the skillbook ma got you. But the game has creative ways around situations, even if the default is usually fighting through.
Conclusions
Much as I want to go more indepth, WoL is a game you need to experience with as few spoilers as possible. It's an insane world with cooky characters, much less refined than the sequel, but it's fun. And the dlc also has major merit. Go play it, you'll have a laugh.

Review from 2018: A very funny game that sometimes gets dragged down with repetition and a pretty boring combat system, made me laugh out loud a few times though, the game would benefit from a quest log as sometimes questlines get buried and forgotten

I have been a fan of K.O.L for about 20 years so I am bias in saying that this is a incredible, fun little game. Highly re-playable and a great addition to the world of loathing for fans like me. For non-fans my friends have thought it was witty and fun and they enjoyed the puzzle solving and unique nature of the Kingdom of Loathing universe. I deeply anticipate anything to come from this series and appreciate how they have stayed true to their nature over the years and over platforms.
