I don't recommend it. They need to fix the controls, can't bind new keys because they reset to a really stupid default setup each fucking time.

A grand time! The visuals, the combat, it's all quite satisfying. While it can be a little difficult to understand visually, at first, there are plenty of signposts indicating your height, where/when the enemy is going to attack, as well as what lies within your weapon's range, along with many other cues. This game's combat has its own unique rhythm and strategies that, when understood, allows for some fluid and satisfying combos. Even the "slow" builds have plent of ways of navigating terrain. Mix this with the different playstyles that the mix of weapons and headrigs provide, as well as the semi-persistent upgrades you gain and lose over the course of runs, and the numerous enemy types/modifications, and there is a lot of variety to be found from fight-to-fight. Speaking of gaining and losing, this game's roguelike mechanics are implemented well, especially in the level generation, as well as its destruction. It's not just a matter of hopping into a room and killing the baddies, but each level has a black corrupting core in the center that will destroy the level around you as you fight, if you let it. You can also destroy segments of the level yourself, which comes with benefits and drawbacks such as cooling off your "heat" meter, while destroying that segment of solid ground to stand on. Now, the only set of levels you run is 13 floors, which includes bosses. I first beat it around hour 6, but going for repeated runs with different builds and higher scores will be plenty incentive for some. The core gameplay loop is more than satisfying enough, and there is plenty to improve in terms of one's own skill on the repeated playthroughs. Some will call it short, but I rather enjoy the length, considering the level, enemy, and build variety. More than worth the price!

This game rules. It seriously has one of the most unique character controllers I've experienced in a character action game, in a way that makes me feel like this weighty bulk of destruction. Once it starts coming together in your hands, it's really something. Enemy designs are good, combat has an amazing back-and-forth flow to it, and the killer soundtrack and art tie everything together. I'm not quite sure yet what sort of Hell I'm ascending through, but I can't wait to keep exploring it.

If you like what you see, controller play may be alright, refund if not? Keyboard controls are a mess, not WSAD, can't assign mouse at all, WSAD change resulted in turning only no actual movement, and arrow keys already assigned, won't allow assigning, even in a 2018 release, HUH? Refunded.

Overall worth a thumbs up, because once you get used to it it's really fun. The only major issue is that it's not always easy to hit the enemies like you intend to. But the artwork and music create a good atmosphere, and even after beating it it's still worth a couple of runs just for fun. #LoveIndies

Too many negative reviews for this little gem. It's nice to look at and it plays at a fast pace. If you are wish listing this game make sure to pick it up on sale and drop a positive review if you like it. It's got some jank in the UI but it plays like it looks in the 15min I played at least and I made it to stage 3. Game seems short if your good at souls games but it seems like a good game to beat in a day kind of thing. Good luck and Praise the Sun

I gave a positive review in Feb 2018 with just a bit of playtime. I played more recently, relearned the game, and saw how basic the game really is. It's hardly a roguelike. There are only 5 weapons, 3 of which are awful. Most of the skill upgrades don't seem to work. Hitboxes and visuals feel messy and inconsistent. This was a game I wanted to start speedrunning, which would be doable since a full clear of 13 rooms is fast, but it's just boring.

Just starting out. Feels REALLY good to control so far, and I'm quickly getting powerups and the like. I'm really enjoying it. If it looks good to you, go ahead and pick it up and go in blind. EDIT: Now that I'm understanding the game a bit better, I'm realizing this game handles risk/reward beautifully.

Tried playing with keyboard and instead of using wasd the default is ijkl, i'd rather not get use to some new layout for this game so i tried to re-map the keys only to find out you cannot use the mouse for keys.

Violet Cycle lets its unusual and wiggly graphics get in the way of gameplay and visual clarity too much for me to recommend it. You ever stare at a still, unmoving surface of water and throw something in it just to marvel at how much the liquid moves and creates visible waves just because you threw a single, tiny rock into it ? Violet Cycle reminds me of that. Every movement i make, especially while in combat, feels wiggly, imprecise, out of my control. Lack of readability is this game's biggest issue; the environments are cluttered, often with useless scenery to make the game look prettier (which it does very well), but this combined with the game's floaty visuals & controls makes everything feel disorienting. You'll more than likely get hit without understanding why, or wonder where you are on the screen amidst the visual effects. This game is not without merit however; it is appealing visually and the character design is as unorthodox as it is hard to read. The music is serviceable and the lore is presented in a way that makes it both optional and involving. In its current state i can't recommend it, but if the developers allow players to play the game without as many visual effects and tighter controls i could see myself getting a lot of fun out of Violet Cycle.
