A tournament-style expansion with competitive scenarios where you do not just develop your dungeon, but actively fight for map control and adapt to your chosen Underlord. The main feature of the expansion is the choice of dungeon ruler. Shale, Volta and Lamash are available, and if you own "Heart of Gold", you can also play as Kasita. Each Underlord has their own style, strengths and weaknesses, as well as modified Veins of Evil. Because of this, not only your available tools change, but also your whole approach to completing the scenarios. Shale is the most chaotic and aggressive option. She focuses on beasts, mutations and fast pressure. Her trait, The Swarm, helps you gather a large army of Beasts more quickly, including empowered creature variants. At the same time, Shale has weaker defenses: because of Reckless, she is limited to basic defensive structures, and her defenses cost more and require more resources. So with Shale it is better to pressure the enemy instead of sitting behind heavy fortifications. Volta is the complete opposite. His style is built around fortifications, slow advancement and defensive play. Thanks to Iron Curtain, defenses are cheaper, reserve less mana, and defense parts are produced faster. Volta also has a strong set of defensive tools, such as Storm Vortex, Alchemine and Infernal Urn. But he pays for this by losing normal Beast-based gameplay: because of Civilised, he cannot build a Beast Den. With Volta, it makes more sense not to rush into open combat, but to gradually push across the map with fortified positions. Lamash is an Underlord built around the undead. Her style revolves around the Crypt, Necromancers, Ghouls, Banshees and using corpses as a resource. Thanks to Undead Horde, she can raise large masses of undead more quickly, and Necromancers can control more Ghouls. On the other hand, living creatures are more expensive for her because of Hazard Pay, so Lamash should not be played like a regular Underlord, but through turning the living and the dead into an undead army. The new modes also fit this idea well. In King of the Underhill, you need to capture and hold key points that attack the enemy Dungeon Core. In Core Shards, you need to destroy separate fragments of the enemy core, which forces you to attack and defend several directions instead of simply sending one army straight into the center of the enemy base. Overall, it is a good expansion for players who already understand the mechanics of "War for the Overworld" and want more combat-focused, dense and replayable scenarios.
