The best way to play Serious Sam 3 so far. So I'll just leave my recommendation for the game. A very reluctant recommendation. Serious Sam 3 is probably the the second worst game in the franchise. In some aspects, it has a few fewer flaws compared to the previous ones, but a truckload of others have been added. The pace is good (kinda), the movement is much faster compared to the originals (Which helps with the terrible level design and enemy encounters), the shooting is adequately satisfying (But nothing remarkable for the time), the graphics are not so terrible for an arcade game that seems to have been released in a context well out of its time (which doesn't mean they haven't aged like milk) AND you have a notable absence of the most annoying features of the old ones that were unfortunately rescued in the later entries (Most obviously, the constant gratuitous ambushes that add nothing to the experience). The game has that veneer of amateurism that today has become part of its charm. I've always found it quite amusing that one of the most dumb franchises out there, with the most braindead gameplay you can imagine, also has some of the most down-to-earth scenarios you could find back then. The first stages in particular were probably inspired by genuine war zones, bringing a very strange and contrasting dose of realism. Not that the game has an adequate atmosphere to match the setting... Any spark of immersion is promptly obliterated by the constant interruptions of one of the worst implementations of dynamic music systems I've ever seen. I can't understand how anyone would find it acceptable to listen to constant, repeated micro-snippets of an action track that never progresses every time you encounter an enemy along the way. It's incredibly distracting. It ruins both the mood of the exploration and the action when it does unfold. It's even more unbelievable since Serious Sam 4 still uses the same system. So it must be on purpose. The game looks like an over-produced mod that has a lot of rough edges. It has a poorly finished look and a lack of elegance in its presentation that makes its low budget obvious. Too many empty spaces with no purpose. Pointless detours. Secrets that seem to have been deliberately implemented with the intention of making it seem like you shouldn't find them and don't offer any significant rewards (like climbing pieces of geometry that shouldn't be possible to climb, only to find a weapon that you simply can't find ammo for until you advance two or three more levels), very strange and unbalanced resource distribution, really bad animations and so on. The waves of enemies don't feel designed. Most of them simply happen in a very inconsistent and loose manner, giving a very random character to the combat experience, instead of something continuous and intense. Not to mention the almost permanent moments of enemies that simply get lost amidst the monstrously redundant geometry of the environments. And the jokes and one-liners never land (It's a little embarrassing). But, of course, the thing is pretty dumb. unapologetically gamy. So whatever. Somehow the formula works. Even playing it safe, Serious Sam 3 is uncompromising and guaranteed fun. I can barely say it's a mediocre game, but it is probably the best kind of garbage you can find out there. Crushing hundreds of enemies at once in a more or less structured and suitably punishing dance has an inexhaustible and timeless appeal. It's never a bad idea to indulge in something like this. Definitely recommended. P.S: Croteam, please, this is not rocket science. Put a non-intrusive ambient track when the player is exploring and then when (AND ONLY WHEN) a big fight is about to start (you know, the main attraction of your franchise since the first game), THEN you blast the action track.
