Okay, so this one is weak on plot and the interface is... glitchy. Despite being newer than the first one in the series, it's less interesting, although also less creepy. But should rescuing your boyfriend from hell *be* less creepy?
The good:
- Steam achievements (easy with a bit of patience)
- Steam trading cards
- The HO scenes in and of themselves are decent (too bad the click zones aren't)
- Um, it comes in a pack, so if it's on sale you get a double discount?
The bad:
- I almost never notice or complain about problems with the "click zone" for objects in HO scenes; this game has made me fully aware of just how freaking annoying a poor interface can be
- Seriously, you will think you're wrong about an object until you come back to it in frustration and click the exact right spot and poof! it was the right object all along
- Also, the overall interface is poor: you'll find yourself clicking on things (active cursor, marked on Map) and it just doesn't work, but if you come back after completing a specific action, it suddenly it does something (it's maddening, because the Map says there's a live action, and the cursor switches to active, but... nothing happens); and forget about "sparkles" helping you out - either there aren't any, or I missed them... all of them
- On the poor interface design, one (maybe nit-picky) thing that bugged me was having to click on an object to find out what it was; also, object-environment interactions weren't as intuitive as they should have been (and in some scenes were just very hard to find)
Okay, so you're wondering why I didn't just say "look, get this game only if you really like both the genre AND completing a series/set of games AND are a sucker for achievements and steam cards" (i.e., me). I think it was a desire to say the following:
What kind of bizarre premise - and yes, there are lots of really awful ones out there, but this one may just be my new #1 worst premise ever - is it to showcase an arguably shaky relationship (the girl's already fed up with her boyfriend for not proposing soon enough), by having the girl take a phone call in the middle of a super-romantic dinner, so that her about-to-finally-propose boyfriend decides that to pass the time he'll just casually pick up and read the magic tome sitting on a nearby chair (???) - and then he does his BEST to read aloud the ***succubus summoning spell*** he finds, ostensibly because he's sure it won't work? And then this pretty young woman literally goes to the ends of the earth (in high heels, ofc) to get the guy back - and I kept thinking "is she just desperate to get married, or does she care about Mark? because I'm not sure."
Thank you. I feel better now. Only buy this game if you can accept up front that it has a sub-par interface and an underwhelming story. The Bonus Story was more interesting, and had fewer hit-zone issues, but was far from perfect (I just kind of liked the character). Get it on sale (very on sale), if you get it.
