Turn Zero adds to the game. Some of the scenarios are game changing, with complete transformation in dynamics.

All other reviews talk about bugs, but i haven encounterd any, perhaps beacouse the are patched by now (2024)
As to the content: if you played twilight so many times that you know your oponents hands based on the cards that haven apeared yet, this is the expansion for you, if your not at this level yet you probably wont need this DLC and it might just be confuseing

As a twilight struggle fan, I am actually pretty disappointed in this little mini-expansion.
There are some bugs which cause the Turn Zero variant not to play correctly, which is by itself reason to stay clear, but my problem is that it messes too much with the delicate balance of the game.
Twilight Struggle is defined for me by its almost chess levels of balance and strategy. Yes the cards you are dealt at the beginning of a round are random, but clever play and planning can make any hand playable. And because of the split between US and USSR cards, you having a bad hand filled with your opponents cards, usually meant they had a bad hand too. Even things like coups and realignment rolls have risk/reward aspects to them that need to factor into your play.
This expansion pack messes with that delicate balance and, in my opinion, creates a lot of unfun games. I was flabbergasted when I realized that a hand I was dealt meant I had lost. I was the USSR and my opponent headlines CIA into a coup to decrease defcon to 2. In my hand I find 3 cards that decrease defcon no matter what (duck and cover, and two new cards Kremlin Flu and First Lightning). I can space race one, hold on to one... but one of them must be played. So I lost in the 2nd round when cards were drawn basically. Bad luck? Sure, but emblamatic of this expansion.
The Turn Zero variant adds a few dice rolls at the beginning of the game that can massively change the balance of power at the beginning of the game. You can nudge the dice rolls in your favor but only very little. I found the decisions made during turn zero to be uninteresting and the consequences often pretty sever for one side. It may also literally have 0 impact.
If you want to add more randomness and are desperate to spice up the game by any means necessary, than I could see getting some mileage out of this little mini-expansion. But I found the randomness actively detracted from what made the game good and the new choices it brought to be uninteresting.
I would say skip this DLC.

I love this board game and was excited to play on my computer. After multiple attempts and the spinning wheel of death each time I have decided to cal it quits. I really wish they would support this game and fix the bugs!! I have requested a refund, SAD!

If you want this for fun, try it, but if you don't want to meet any bug, you'd better skip this expansion.
Don't expect all the bugs will be fixed in the future, the one I encountered today has already been reported for a whole month, still hasn't fixed yet.

I like idea but it has few problems.
First. Patch ruined Twilight Struggle classical music and is replaced with crap.
Second DLC allows you use also Collector’s Edition Card Art but you don't have to. I prefer classical original cards... but even original cards are changed!!!!

Third and final. Bugs. Bugs are not broken. New cards add new bugs. For example. You space card and you still get defcon 0.
Fix those 3 things and i give positive review.

Recommends on sale or as part of a bundle. This is a mini expansion that adds new card art, 8 promo cards that mainly favour the US player and some new starting situations to the game. They are fun extras but the base game is already well designed. The first few turns may be predictable but that doesn't mean they need fixing. It's the kind of thing you may appreciate more if you've played hundreds of times and want a more random starting scenario.

As others have noted there are defects. For example, there is an outcome where the Suez Crisis is supposed to permanently lose its effect. This is not happening. It will be a good expansion if this stuff gets fixed.

It's been almost one year since the last patch, and yet there are glaring Turn Zero bugs still present. What makes it so bad is these bugs (like Yalta not affecting Suez Crisis) are simple ones, not complex AI issues. And their presence makes it completely invalid to play Turn Zero in certain ways.
Shame!

Latest 10/1 - From a quick play this evening, it looks like all the bugs with turn zero have been fixed, and so I am happy to recommend this expansion to Twilight Struggle.
It offers numerous 'what if' scenarios which are both thought provoking and enable the early game which can so often form a predictable pattern to be a lot more varied.
It does however create the possibilities of incredibly lop-sided scenarios, so I wouldn't recommend it for tournament or competitive play.
Bugs fixed so far:
[strike] 'One Small Step...' new card design has 3 Ops written on it (still plays as 2 though) [/strike]
[strike]'First Lightning' card reduces DEFCON when played on Space Race, and playing the card for the Ops as the US does not remove the card despite it being asterisked. Also AI does not recognise this as a DEFCON suicide card.[/strike]
[strike]Turn Zero events that supposedly cancel the effects of 'Blockade' and 'Socialist Governments' on T1& T2 don't work - both of these events have occurred after supposedly being disabled by VE Day and 1945 election.[/strike]
[strike]'Unable to switch games while in the crisis phase of Turn Zero as the crisis overlay vanishes when you return to the game.[/strike]
[strike] Unaligned movement card doesn't work properly.[/strike]
[strike]Petrov card says 2 ops on card graphic, but is 3ops ingame.[/strike]
[strike]Issues with 'Allied Berlin' scoring card (rules & graphics)[/strike]
[strike]In the new space race, 'eagle/bear is landed' lets you place influence in enemy controlled countries at cost of 1op once per turn when tracker says once per action round.[/strike]
[strike]Thanks to DodgerWalker / Edgeofnothing / bblum / soroltkileny on reddit for spotting the issues.[/strike]
