I first played this game in 2015 and loved it. 11 years later I came back to replay its 4.5-hour campaign. It does require some patience since a few levels apparently have design flaws, but overall it’s still playable. The story depicts an invasion of the US by North Korea with extreme brutality like Nazis. You and your squad fight back as resistance. It looks like back in early 2010s North Korea was apparently imagined as the biggest hypothetical threat, in the game you witness atrocities in the streets, civilians being executed, piles of bodies in ditches and labor camps. In one scene your squad hides among dead bodies to escape. The campaign offers a decent variety of missions: stealth missions where you use a sniper rifle and fire on command, a flight level where you protect tanks, vehicle missions where you man a mounted gun. For 2010s standards I think that variety was not bad, though by today’s standards it feels dated and most part of the stealth mission made no sense. The movement can be rigid, enemies respawn until you reach the next objective, the gunfire sounds bad. Still it’s interesting to look back at the time. The final battle takes place on the Golden Gate Bridge, and while it’s best not to think too hard about whether the bridge could support that many tanks and heavy trucks, or how your sacrifice somehow stops the war, the game does show how people in the 2010s imagined modern conflict. Looking back from today it’s striking how little emphasis there is on drones or advanced intelligence equipment. Even though the game includes land, sea and air weapons and vehicles, it still reflects an older version of warfare. In hindsight, that says a lot about how much military technology has evolved in less than 2 decades. The gameplay itself is not always enjoyable, I bought a shotgun DLC back in 2015 for $0.49, only to find out that it was for multiplayer. In the single player campaign you do not receive it as an early reward, you can find it later in one of the factories before it collapses during a fire. Shooting is not satisfying, AI is weak, but again the game is still playable. Most levels are fine, though the most disappointing part is probably the ending, where you fight what looks like a fairly ordinary enemy vehicle, except it has an extremely long health bar. Once you defeat it, the game simply ends without much follow-ups. At this point, I would say the game is more interesting as a reference than as something fun to play. If you are curious, pick it up on sale. Also, do not rush to ladders, always let your teammates climb first otherwise you are very likely to run into glitches and have to reload a save.
