I found this game after the Dev released some fun and well made characters in the Rivals of Aether Workshop. It wasn't for a while until I learned that these characters were from a game. I got the game during a sale and I had a lot more of a blast than I thought I'd be getting into. The controls are tight and I always felt like I never failed an input, the hit boxes are forgiving, and (if you're playing on Normal Difficulty) you get fair checkpoint placements. Each weapon felt useful and fun to swap between, with each gimmick and upgrade just adding to the sheer fun factor of it all. The different characters you meet were all genuinely interesting and intriguing. I didn't think I'd get this much fun and satisfaction out of a Metroidvania I learned about when fighting a wacky cast of mod characters.
Try the game, it's the *right* thing to do!

Super Gear Quest wears it's inspirations on it's sleeve. If you liked Cave Story, you will appreciate this game. And, even if you aren't, it's an enjoyable metroidvania, with lovable characters and challenging game mechanics.

This game starts out pretty okay, but then you get the movement stuff and the game ramps up a LOT.
I like it.

Interesting gameplay and puzzle mechanics. This is not my typical game genre that I'm into, but I can say that anyone interested in this genre would likely enjoy it. I bought this game primarily to support my friend (the composer) and try it out. Awesome soundtrack by Stephan "ModalModule" Seguin. Clearly the soundtrack was inspired by Megaman, Valkyrie Profile, among many other games I know he played and loved growing up.

It's a good metroidvania. Nice platforming, good comedic elements, and lots of weaponry.

Honestly I feel bad for not giving this a recommendation, but I simply don't have a choice as if I were to be asked by someone if they should play this, the answer would simply be no. I really appreciate the dedication that the developer has shown when trying to improve this game but the problem is that at some point he's just going to have to accept that it's better to take all the lessons learned from making this game and use that knowledge to make a better game. Although this game is way better than Red Goblin Cursed forest, it is still designed the same way: via using the 3D unity engine as a canvas for a 2D game and just winging it. For comparison, imagine if you bought some lego and used that to make a wall that you then use for painting. The biggest problem with this game is that there is no intuitive way to tell whether a wall or something is passable or not as there seems to be no specific design the creator went with when choosing whether the character should pass through something or not. As this is the creator's first game such mistakes are of course expected but it needs to be mentioned nonetheless.
Anyway, I wish the creator all the best on any future endeavors.

After playing this game after buying it, this game is pretty good as a metroidvania game. The story is pretty good and enjoyable, all the bosses were fun and challenging especially the true final boss at the end of the game, and seeing other kewtian characters at post-game. Refighting the bosses that have a X form was even better to fight instead of the normal bosses. This game is a go to replayable for anyone who ownes it. Keep doing what your doing Dev. I can't wait for more updates from this game! :)

First of all, credit to the devs for continuing to update the game and fix issues as they pop up. While some of the problems early on should absolutely have been addressed before launch (good controller support, in particular), I appreciate that they're trying to polish the product as they receive feedback. When an update broke the intro for a particular boss, I was able to reach out on the devs' discord and they pushed out a new update within an hour.
Make no mistake: this is HEAVILY inspired by Cave Story. The graphics, music, platforming, gun styles, and level themes range from "reminiscent" to "nearly a direct copy," and this ends up being both good and bad. In some ways, "More Cave Story" is a good time, but at other times you can't help but think about how the original is better.
As a metrodvania, the gameplay is solid, with plenty of secrets and collectables to seek out. The movement options that get introduced later in the game are legitimately fun and help keep things face-paced. Optional upgrades for your guns help keep things fresh, but by the end of the game I found that most of my weapons had fallen by the wayside in favor of just a couple high-damage options.
The boss design is hit-and-miss, and mainly suffers from being bland and one-note. Even in some of the later fights with (probably too many) phases, each phase is just about cycling through 1-3 attacks that you can just develop a rote pattern for. The designers try to add some variety by changing the boss arenas through each phase, but mostly that just serves to mask the simplicity of the boss attacks.
The weakest part of the game for me was probably the "digital" world where you play as the Avatar Duo. It felt simultaneously unnecessary and under-utilized. The platforming all feels the same, the "double" character doesn't add anything meaningful to the gameplay, the bosses are even more straightforward than the standard ones, and the last powerup you earn for the duo is barely relevant. It feels tacked on in a way, and it's used inconsistently. At first, you get the impression that one of the main reasons you play as the Duo is to unlock powerups for the main character, like when you gain the ability to pick up heavy objects...but later, your most important upgrades just happen automatically. They even say something to the effect of "We fixed this while you were doing other stuff!" Why didn't we play through an area to unlock that ability like before?
Still, for all the faults, its a fun world to explore. The story is fine, the characters are cute, and the villains have some personality. There are frustrations throughout the game (the final area in particular being another example of "worse Cave Story"), but if you keep your expectations at a lukewarm temperature its a fun game. I'm hopeful that the devs will branch out and up the complexity and design on their next project.
