Old Time Hockey isn’t trying to be EA SPORTS NHL — and that’s exactly why it works. This game throws modern realism out the window in favor of a scrappy, arcade-style hockey experience that’s loud, clunky, and full of charm.
From the intentionally loose controls to the over-the-top brawls, Old Time Hockey captures the chaos of a bygone era. It plays like a tribute to the kind of couch multiplayer mayhem you remember from the PS2 days. The mechanics aren’t perfect — expect some janky moments here and there — but the fun outweighs the flaws.
Where it really shines is in its story mode. You take control of a washed-up, bottom-of-the-barrel team fighting its way to redemption. The characters are ridiculous in the best way, and there’s a surprising amount of heart behind the humor.
If you’re looking for a serious sports sim, this isn’t it. But if you want a break from the polished, corporate feel of modern titles and just want to bash heads, score goals, and laugh your ass off, Old Time Hockey delivers. Sad to see there will never be a sequel, I feel like if there was this game would just keep getting better with future iterations.
