Very easy game. It does not simulate ACW warfare and is more of a 'shoot-em-up'. I will not be buying any more from this series based on this game.

Its a fun, easy to learn and quick to master strategy game about the first year of the Civil War. If you don't want something terribly complex this is good. There is an issue with ctd in game that comes up far too much. My way of dealing with it has been to not press anything when the music stops as the game is freezing until it starts playing again. For a game this old to not have had this fixed by now is a shame but bought on sale for less than 2 dollars, its a minor hassle.

So far seems like a fun easy to play game. My only major problem so far is the union army wearing grey (hello game designers grey, rebs are wearing brown but that is O.K. , Butternut). I am an Ex Union Re-enactor so I am biased on small details like this BLUE Vs. Grey/Butternut. But other than that this seams like a fun game, do not expect Civil War General level game play or complexity. If I run into major problems I will add onto this review, Yes.

The rules and guidelines are easy to master, the AI is fair, the Steam discount made it worthwhile

Keeps Crashing ! Just when you start to get into it , it crashes ... Ryzen 9 5900X /RTX4080 Super. I guess its because of the Nov. 1st update !

As the title states, deals with the opening year of the American Civil War. Gameplay is as most HexWars games. Decent array of scenarios. If you are comfortable with HexWars style, recommended.

This is a comparative between this game and Sierra's Civil War – Generals to highlight some of the shortfalls for the game.
From what I can tell, both games are:
- Historically accurate
- Contains levels of difficulty, although Sierra's Civil War has more difficulty levels
- Turned Base
- Hexadecimal movements
There the similarities end in my opinion. This game does not come close to Sierra. The following are some of the limitations I perceived in playing this game:
- Cannot combine infantry with artillery which is common in a military setting.
- Each scenario is separately self-contained and does not build on earlier victories or defeats (e.g., you are not rewarded/punished for an earlier battle and cannot improve your army’s weapon)
- Does not appear to be much logic on direction and range of artillery.
- Simple hit/miss results.
- Barricades/rough grounds/elevation does not seem to have much effect on battle.
- Levels of health, morale, experience, troop strength, etc. not easily seen except for chevrons displayed on each unit.
- Instructions are fairly basic and vague (in my opinion).
All in all, this game is not bad, but does not hold a candle light against some of Sierra’s Civil War Strategy Games. I will probably play this game off and on when I have some time to kill but I miss the old Sierra’s games when traveling on the road with only laptop. Note: I still have a old computer with Window’s 95 just to be able to play these and other older games. And, when I have time, still play Sierra’s Civil War.
It would be nice if Steam could purchase/license some of the old Sierra games including the Sierra’s Civil War Series. From what I can see Activision, who purchased Sierra, only has King Quest.
