Would not recommend. When a game is $15.00, you expect a decent game right? Well not for The Unwelcomed. The controls are wacky and the game is just really buggy. If you were to reach for something across a table it will just push you back like a school bully in a hallway. if you accidentally go through a wall or cabinet the screen goes black with a rare chance of coming back. I tried to set a crowbar on a table and it just bounces off like it landed on a trampoline. It has a "decent" story but the overall gameplay is in need of major work.

Really fun puzzle/escape room game with fantastic atmosphere. The puzzles were clear and I always knew what the room expected me to do without the solutions being blatantly obvious. Puzzles in the mid-late game definitely took some looking around and careful thinking to figure out and solve. This game is not without it's glitches though. One of the later rooms had a weird issue where I couldn't move into a certain corner to get to objects using ingame movement, and required me to physically walk over to them. The final room seems to be bugged as well: a key obtained shortly into the room instead of opening a door, presumably leading to more puzzles, instead opens the main door allowing the room to be "finished" without finishing the main puzzle. Those are the only standout issues that I remember and even keeping that in mind, the game is still a blast with fantastic atmosphere and interesting puzzles. Definitely recommended.

this game has as many bugs and glitches in the code as it does bugs running across the floor. Fix the room with the dart board and the shelves. i cant even complete the room without it glitching out and i know how to do it. tried 3 times.. glitches every time..

The game is one huge bug. Many of the items just disappear when you try to put them somewhere - and then you have to start over.
you can also cheat by sticking things through walls, and then getting other items to come out through the walls to you...
The riddles does not makes sense in some cases - like the "put the books in order" riddle - here you have to do it the wrong way. Not very nice that the devs didn't make any research of how books are placed in order - and that makes you very frustrated, when you have to figure out what the developper thinks is the right way - and not what actually is the right way.
Overall don't buy this game - it is a first gen vr game with LOTS of bugs and bad riddles...

- Specs say it supports Linux
- Specs say it supports VR
- However it does not support both at the same time! Either VR or Linux!
- Ok, at least Valve allows me to use Proton, the windows compatibility framework. I try a couple different versions of Proton with the game, always crashes when starting the tutorial. Note: I have more than 100 windows games which work perfectly in my VR (Valve Index) through Proton.
- Also, it does not even support ultrawide aspect ratios? What the funk!
- Uninstalled, refunded.
- Game is now unwelcomed. Perfect name for it!

Pros:
-Currently 3 rooms, looks like there is room for more too
-There seems to be a story in development
-Creepy atmosphere adds to the immersion
-Devs seem to be pretty active with updates & on the discussion board
Cons:
-voice acting isn't very good
-there are are number of "bad" puzzles which takes the fun out of the game and replaces it with frustration
-on the topic of puzzles, a lot of the time in this game is spent hunting for hidden items, which may appeal more to crowds who enjoy treasure hunts (while disappointing those who enjoy solving puzzles)
-door/drawers are operated by the trigger, instead of using the motion controllers to pull/push them open which breaks the immersion
I've played a number of other room escape games on the vive, and I am of the opinion that this game is the least polished out of the ones that I have played. But hey, it's early access, I may yet change my review as it progresses :)

My very first Review. I had to write one because I loved this game.
This is what a VR game should be! I was nervous at first because I don't play horror games or anything with jump scares in VR, it's too much for my aging heart. This has neither, even though I was a bit nervous at times because of the atmosphere or music. I assure you, nothing will jump out, nothing will be behind you or be there unexpectedly.
The puzzles stumped me quite a few times, but eventually you figure them out. I needed help about 3 times as it wasn't clear enough to figure out on my own. (I'm going to blame that on player error...lol) Please add more rooms! Another floor! I’ll keep coming back, I promise!
Make more games like this one and keep the horror at this level for us scaredy-cats.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
This is a pure puzzle / escape room VR game. There really is no horror, other than it being dark and some creaky door sounds and tiny spiders ... and this creepy looking teddy bear. There are a total of 7 escape rooms, each independent of each other, plus a tutorial level. The game took me 6 hours to complete (I got stuck in 2 rooms) but this game could probably be finished in 3-4 hours.
The actual puzzles are pretty good. The visuals are just okay. The sounds are okay as well. However, there's an overall clunkiness to the controls and to the environments. The worst bug / feature here is that items will not spawn at all that you need to progress. For example, in room 3, there's this sheet of paper with a hint that's needed that did not spawn at all during my gameplay. I had played this same room the day before and knew where the item was and what information it had, but I had to restart the level to get it to spawn (option in the menu to restart level ought to tell you something). This happened on another room as well.
There's also clipping. You have the option of teleporting or free locomotion with snap turning. Unfortunately, there are several pathing issues and it is easy to get stuck. You can change to teleportation though to teleport out of the area where you are stuck in the options and then switch back. Grabbing items is also touch and go.
Rate 5/10. I had fun and there's lots of content here. Unfortunately, the lack of polish / bugs brings this experience down to rather mediocre. Neutral recommendation, only for puzzle fans willing to overlook flaws

The Unwelcomed is highly recommended if you like escape room games.
I really like the atmosphere and I have no complaints about the graphics and audio quality. Not to mention the voice actor who does a great job delivering the story and also some fun commentaries when interacting with objects in the game.
Currently there’s only one escape room available with more to come. The first room should take 30-60 minutes to figure out, however it took me longer since I got stuck at one point. Also the save feature is not yet available so I had to replay the first sections a couple of times because I didn’t complete it in one session. But with a little help from the developer I finally figured it out. This puzzle was actually quite logical and the fault in this case was mainly mine since I was trying to force a wrong solution.
Anyways, I had a great time figuring out the puzzles and I’m looking forward to try out more rooms as soon as they are available.

Just played through it in its current state, took me 44 mins, the puzzles were all logical and worked well, although i did have to guess 1 part.
The graphics are good, it has potential for exploration when more rooms are eventualy opened up, as you can teleport around the manion (only 1 puzzle room open atm)
The only thing i didnt like were the hand models, they are terrible lol.
Would definatly recommend this if you like puzzles/escape rooms... yes 44 mins is not much game time, but remember its early access and they have promised to add more to it.
Go get it whilst its on offer i say :-)
