Just a very good video game.

I am not, typically, a hospital sim fan as a rule, but with this being Brightrock, that didn't matter! I got exactly what I expected; a very enjoyable management game with that particular Brightrock humour. As usual, top-notch work. It took me 71 hours to 5-star all the campaign missions, sandboxes and the expansion (which came out during the latter half of my playthrough). The campaign was both amusing and varied enough to keep my interest, though I had about had enough by the end. (Still that's 10-20 more hours than a typical RPG...!) I did not attempt the challenge mode difficulty; normal was a pleasant experience and enough for me. It was genuinely nice to play a game that didn't frustrate me for a change. I didn't quite 100% it - Brother Gumbo was still level 9 and I was only 92% towards maxing out the Khouber Bali species relationship; but at that point I'd have been doing it for the sake of it for a likely a fair few more hours. (Given as right up to the end of the last bit of sandbox, I will note I can't say I've even seen all sandbox repeatable quest, since the expansion clearly introduced some new ones, but I suspect I've seen the majority.) The humour is all good, ranging from funny to some really laugh-out loud moments. The story itself is suitably light-hearted for the most part, though that last mission and expansion turn up the stakes and are slightly more serious (slightly...) The characters were all very strong, well-written an engaging, carried by the excellent voice-work. I particularly enjoyed the arc in the interactions between HEAL and MEDI. Of the consultants, I think the stongest characters were Twiggy, Alpha and Ohdious (the first two being among the best mechanically, I think, to me). It should also be noted that among the humour in the lore there was the expected level of world-building which showed serious,, non-comedic, genuine thought had gone into it, before the humour was layered on the top. I particularly approve of that. The sound design was also very good; popping the critters, pests and chitters had a very satisfying splat. I encountered a couple of minor bugs, but nothing that interrupted the play. I think my biggest gripe, if you can even call it that, is that I was usually so busy moving up and down, searching and popping critters, that I really had chance to sit back an appreciate the animations as well, unique for each treatment and disease. Overall then, a very strong recommendation, and one i am not at all surprised to be making on a Brightrock game.

An absolute delight of a game! It had everything I felt was missing from some other management sims: charming characters, well-timed humor, and encouragement of adaptability. Absolutely play if you want a more story-driven version of a game like Two Point Hospital. P.S. I've just started getting into the challenge modes and they really force you to use every tool available.

This game deserves a lot more love in my view - as has been said it's Theme Hospital in space but a slightly different take on the formula vs the original or Two Point. Less about managing different kinds of staff, more about the different species that come through your doors; less on diagnosis but more on multi-stage treatments; slightly lighter on mechanics but has a full-on story mode that's decently fleshed out (rather than just a campaign with themed levels). Singling out two for criticism and one for praise - the challenge mode is too hard to be fun, and there are annoying bugs with patients becoming unresponsive and impossible to clear; but on the other hand this game seems to mostly avoid the gameplay ever feeling a bit stodgy, which is a near certainty in these kinds of games (much as I love them) - I think that's a real, rare achievement. Aside from that he strengths and weaknesses of this game are mostly similar to its inspiration and its inspiration's other spiritual sequel - but it plays differently enough that it feels like a fresh experience. Highly recommended if you like this kind of game.

So far from all those I've played, this is the only worthy successor to Theme Hospital. The others are somehow lacking... I hope the DLC is as good as the base game!

I usually like this kind of game, and this could be fun if... The game randomly crashes and corrupts your entire save, losing hours of progress. It has happened 3 times in 4 levels. I just CANNOT anymore with this game. This SERIOUSLY needs patching! Cannot recommend to anyone in this state.
