Over 25 years later, Michael Hoenig's score still manages to take me back to the misty days of youth. I admire how delicately he weaves the main Baldur's Gate theme in to so many of these tracks, transforming that rather menacing piece into something refined and beautiful, yet still with that slight hint of unease. The plucked strings and answering horns in "The Friendly Arms [sic] Inn" are a perfect example. And of course every track is infused, for me, with the memories of a quarter century playing this game. "Exploring the Plains" will never fail to rouse the urge to reinstall and begin another grand adventure. I hear "The Beregost Night", and can see the courtesans outside Feldepost's Inn; with "Streets of the City", I am walking along the wharves of Baldur's Gate city again. This is fantasy music very much grounded in reality, in other words the European past, which I think contributes to what makes the game world believable, it's blood and mud more than magic and dragons. "Helm's Temple" leaves no doubt that Candlekeep was based on a medieval monastery as much as anything, ending on an "Amen". There are also plenty of stonking battle themes if that's your thing. I'll stick with the quiet stuff.
