I'm writing this review in light of the "sequel" having just come out, but not by the original devs. Wizard of Legend is a great attempt at a mage based rogue like that while isn't as fancy or flashy as big games like Hades, had a lot of potential upon release and in general has so much charm. The whimsy, the music, the npcs, the potential silly builds... While this game is not perfect, you can tell that it was made by a small passionate dev team with a lot of heart.

Water. Fire. Earth. Air. Long ago, The four nations lived together in Harmony, but everything changed when the fire nation attacked only the avatar, master of all 4 elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he Vanished

Decided not to make a review until I beat it. Games one of the best roguelikes by far. A billion different abilities and hundreds of relics as well as generated levels and encounters. The graphics are awesome for bit graphics and theyre just so cool. Tons of robes and a good sense of progression as you unlock more arcana. Controls are tight for both controller and M&K The moment you get a handle on the controls and find the arcana that fit your playstyle, you feel insanely powerful as you farm and get stronger and collect all the cloaks, arcana, and relics to start with. Also getting that god run where the shop just has what you need and the painter has all your upgraded arcana is just *chefs kiss* As a moba player, its actually a really fun alternative to other top down games that you want the fast pace combat, without the mega time investment (unless youre going for a complete run, then it can take a bit) and its faster to build the character compared to games like PoE. It can also be paused whenever you need.

Wizard of Legend is a fast-paced, dungeon-crawling action roguelike that thrives on its fluid combat mechanics and a deep spell-crafting system. Developed by Contingent99, the game throws players into the role of a powerful wizard-in-training, competing in a magical tournament called the Chaos Trials. What sets Wizard of Legend apart from other games in the genre is not only its smooth, arcade-like gameplay but also its creative approach to magic, allowing players to build personalized spell loadouts that feel both strategic and dynamic. It's an experience that balances challenging combat, replayability, and customization in a compact but compelling package. The core of the game lies in its spell system, referred to in-game as “arcana.” Spells are divided into different elemental types—fire, water, air, earth, lightning, and chaos—and each has its own unique flavor, offering projectiles, traps, dashes, summons, and more. Players can equip a set of spells, including a basic attack, a dash, a standard spell, and a signature spell (a super-charged version of another arcana). With hundreds of arcana to unlock and experiment with, the game encourages creative synergies and experimentation. Building a loadout that chains lightning bolts into fire tornadoes or combines ice traps with wind blasts is not just possible—it’s essential for survival. Combat is fluid and lightning-fast, with a strong emphasis on movement, timing, and area control. The enemies in the Chaos Trials come in varied forms, from elemental golems to teleporting rogues and shield-bearing spellcasters. Each dungeon is procedurally generated, and each biome is themed after one of the elemental schools, offering unique environmental hazards and minibosses. At the end of every biome, players face one of three elemental council members—powerful bosses with their own elaborate spell sets that feel like chaotic duels of magical reflexes. The controls are responsive and intuitive, rewarding players who master positioning, cooldown management, and combo execution. Despite its pixelated retro aesthetic, Wizard of Legend shines with detail and personality. Spell effects are vibrant and impactful without overwhelming the screen, character animations are crisp, and the dungeon environments, though somewhat repetitive over time, are serviceable and atmospheric. The musical score by Dale North complements the pace of the game well, blending ambient tones with energetic tracks during boss fights, adding a sense of urgency and rhythm to combat. The art style may appear modest at first glance, but it supports the fast action beautifully, ensuring clarity during even the most intense spell-slinging exchanges. Where the game truly excels is in its replayability. Each run is different, thanks to randomized dungeon layouts, arcana drops, and relics—passive modifiers that can enhance or dramatically alter playstyle. Over time, players earn Chaos Gems to purchase new arcana and relics between runs, gradually expanding their arsenal and opening up new strategies. This persistent progression keeps the game fresh, even after dozens of hours. There's also a co-op mode, which, while a bit chaotic with two players on screen, adds another layer of fun for those who want to tackle the Chaos Trials with a friend. However, Wizard of Legend is not without its shortcomings. The learning curve can be steep for new players, particularly given the minimal in-game guidance about arcana synergies or effective builds. Some enemies have frustratingly erratic patterns, and without an option to adjust difficulty, the game can feel punishing in early runs. The roguelike structure also means that some playthroughs will simply feel unlucky—poor spell selection or tough early enemy spawns can end a run prematurely through no major fault of the player. While this randomness is a staple of the genre, it occasionally clashes with the skill-based nature of the combat. Despite these minor drawbacks, Wizard of Legend remains one of the most satisfying and skill-driven indie roguelikes available. Its quick matches, fast restarts, and deep spell system make it an ideal game for short bursts of action or longer sessions of experimentation. Whether you’re trying to complete a perfect build or just enjoy dashing through rooms while hurling spells in every direction, the game consistently delivers a high-energy experience that rewards precision, planning, and creativity. For fans of action roguelikes or anyone intrigued by the idea of being a spell-slinging powerhouse in a tightly designed combat arena, Wizard of Legend casts a spell that's hard to resist. I like a lot about this game and the attacks seem varied and interesting. You can clearly create a ton of different builds and decisions are meaningful. However, I don't particularly like the movement and I wasn't really able to find a flow that felt good. I think this is a solid 6/10 with a lot working for it, but IMO, there are better options so I cannot quite recommend.

Really good! The combat feels really smooth and fair. I really like how the cursed items work. Taking them at first will aid you but with a drawback, but sometimes they'll have a counterpart item that combines with it, upgrading it into a really powerful item. Good spells, good items, good combat, Good Game

One of my favorite roguelites ever. Kind of niche but very fun combat and solid customization/unlocks.

I have dove into the depths of chaos magic. I have bled upon the stones in the halls of the greats. I have felt the flames writhe around my body, the earth tremble from my soul, and sparks electrify the air I breathe. And yet, I am left longing. There is little as magnificent as consuming the forbidden arcane, taking upon the relics of old, cursing oneself to greater power in pursuit of transcendence. May the heavens forgive my folly. May my attempts be not in vain. May mine enemies tremble at the potency of my newfound abilities. If I be given the glory of another run, then I swear not to squander my chances. For I long to see my enemies torn apart—sundered by my magic, by my hands. I would recommend. 10/10, blessed brothers. May your magic serve you well, and may the chaos of the trials be not against thee.
