I was very excited for something like this but having to have all the box art/game art on my computer to make it look like it does in the videos is very misleading. Very neat idea but for what this currently does you could pretty much do in any building game you already own without spending the money on it. If someone were to find a way to do it fully without having to download thousands of images it would be very cool. However with what Boxroom currently does and offers it is not worth it at all. I know the store page itself describes the game better btw. Its just the videos themselves feel misleading. Trailer has a disclaimer. Was it there before, I'm not sure but its there now.

📦 It's difficult to give a rational assessment right now, as it's clearly in Early Access. If you don't enjoy immersing in editors, designing environments, and sorting your things, then this is definitely not for you. The game currently offers a fairly average (for the genre) selection of design solutions. There are some strange limitations, furniture is glitchy, placement requires direction guidance, while items require collisions fixes and placing objects on N surfaces corrections. 📢 COVERS can currently be automatically downloaded only via the «BoxCo Wizard» utility (some users didn't realize this; it should have been specified in the game). I like the potential, but it's raw and needs a lot of polishing and patches. Though creating room templates and sharing them through the workshop is a great feature.

I was really really looking forward to this. I love the idea of building up the perfect room for my game collection but unfortunately you are expected to add the covers and art for every game in your library manually. There is a tool on Itch.io from the developer to do this for you but it unfortunately doesn't work. It didn't even detect a third of my game library and I am not willing to put in the time to add art to all the games. It sucks because I really wanted to dive in and create my games room but at this point I am not willing to commit the many many hours it would take to properly have cover art for the game cases.

I really wanna enjoy this game, but the Wizard tool provided to make it possible and easy to pull screenshots and capsule art from your library does not work on Linux/Steamdeck. even attempting to use it through Proton or Wine. Was so excited to play this, but its way too much of a hassle to manually get art and screenshots of every single game i have, and it kills my enjoyment :(

I really really wish I could give this game a recommendation, but in the current state I cannot. I can live with having to go out and download a separate application to pull art for my library, but what I can't stand is that after over 6 hours of organizing my library alphabetically on the shelves, I saved and reloaded the game only for 4/5 of them to disappear in a seemingly random order. I'll revisit the game once there's been a few more updates, but for the time being imma give this a 6/10. Pick it up if you've got a few bucks laying around, but just be aware

its a great idea, and i look forward to it being improved in the future, but i dont recommend buying it until it gets into a less buggy state.

absolutely worth it, this will be so nice with more updates down the line! people complain about not much to do in this "game" but thats pretty much the point - it is a virtual game library for you to create and launch games from to get all the game art you need the box wizard from itch -> https://pantaloon-io.itch.io/boxroom-box-wizard since they had to remove the ingame function after valve said NOPE. at first it didnt find all my games for the art download but after placing some of my games on the in-game shelfs and checking the box wizard again it found all +2000 here is a quote from the nested loop studios discord of noted requested stuff up until now (24th june 2026) : "Most Requested: VR Support Ability to play music Importing Non-steam games Steam Family Share Custom Games Quality of Life: Weather Options Linux Support Snap to grid system Disable Post-Processing Ability to move windows around Stats tab (games, hours, achievements) Undo and Redo buttons Ability to duplicate games Make spines of game cases stand out more Ability to hide/throw away games Ability to move all furniture in the room A way to see and display wish listed games Disable dust particles Ability to duplicate rooms Box sorted by game achievement percentage Customization of what is in the game box. I was intrigued by the idea of having my game collection being in a physical-ish form, and the game does that, but in a very basic way. It pulls your library from steam profile and have give each of them a box for you to grab and put on shelf, as well as add screenshots as content inside the box and launch the actual game from it (cool but not practical). Now as much as I hate give it a negative review, I feel like it's fair for its current state. Edit: There is a small app that downloads most of your box art and screenshots for you here:https://pantaloon-io.itch.io/boxroom-box-wizard I was not able to find this in-game or on the steam page so I missed it. If you are willing to download a separate app for this, my point 1 is invalid. 1. The box arts and screenshots not being pulled directly from Steam is a huge letdown. You are required to manually upload each game's box arts and screenshots. So the process is basically google a game's box art, download it and making sure it's in the right resolution, upload it along with screenshots, and repeat this over and over. It's too much of a chore, especially for someone like me who has almost 1k games. 2. Style. It looks it's meant to recreate what a gamer room looks like back in maybe early 2000s or even before, but for my own personal taste I'd like to make a modern gaming room instead to match the modern games. There is also some clashes in style like you have a modern laptop and speaker in there paired with ancient mouse and keyboard. 3. The graphic doesn't look good enough to convey the vibe. I'm not looking for some UE5-level graphic, but the textures are really low quality, flat surfaces that are just rough to look at. Lighting could also use some works as at night it seems like it's lacking shadows on objects. It was also using 50% of my 5090 for it, which was very odd. 4. Bugs. There were quite a lot of bugs from just 15 mins of playing. Such as light switch being behind wallpaper, mouse being abnormally large, furniture icons being stuck to my cursor if I drag it and close catalogue and speaker only placeable on floor and not desk. Conclusion: even though it only costs 5$ in my region, I have to say for its current state it's not worth it. But I do hope to revisit in the future to see if it grows.

I'm sad to see this has been downvoted to mixed. I only just opened the game so I can't speak too much but genuinely, I am sold on the idea. My brother released a game solo on Steam and when I pulled it from the box, there was a bit of an awe moment because I wasn't really thinking about it. His name is on the bottom right corner of the case as the developer. Opened it, looked at the game cartridge, closed it and then put it in the top corner of a bookshelf. I was like, ♥♥♥♥ yeah. That's the ♥♥♥♥. That was a wonderful feeling. For the many that aren't going to read the notes from the developers: "As you're probably well aware, BOXROOM uses the Steam API in a rather novel way, and it seems we're one of the very first games to do so: as such, there was no real precedent in terms of a review/approval process. Valve needed to take a bit longer than usual to review the game and approve it for release, and we therefore had a few last minute hurdles to overcome. In order to bring the game to Steam, we've needed to make an important change: BOXROOM will no longer pull your games’ capsule art or screenshots directly." The developers do have a solution for it outside of the game. Things aren't perfect but keep in mind, I imagine this is frustrating for them too.

There are so many valid reasons to leave a negative review, instead every review rags on the game for something that was entirely out of the developers control that they literally implemented and were told to take it out. You need the BoxRoom Wizard and the game will pull all your game boxart with no further effort or input. YES it should be in the game; it literally was but Steam told them to take that out so it's just not a valid reason to negative review the game, like complaining about the bus driver coz the bridge collapsed. If you don't want to install another app for one game then check back another time or just don't get it. Do like 10 seconds of due dilligence to find out some very accessible information that you need BoxRoom Wizard to do what the game SHOULD do by default but CAN'T because of beaurocracy. Get that here https://pantaloon-io.itch.io/boxroom-box-wizard Here's my list of actually valid reasons to leave a negative reviews: -Doors behave extremely uncomfortably. Placing a door creates a 'room' which can then be expanded. I have already seen another reviewer do the same thing I did which was break every wall then realize after the fact that the door system means you shouldn't do this. They also can't be rotated and can be a pain to get around when open. -Windows can't be placed on the world edge and if you find this out by attempting to, enjoy moving everything back one square -The catalogue pages are extremely sluggish, there's 4 catalogues when there should really only be 2 at most, there are some furniture overlaps between the magazines and I always open the wrong one and have to paaaainfully slowly navigate to it. Like two of them have different types of shelving. Flip a coin if the one you want is in the red pill pamphlet or the blue pill pamphlet. -No way to stand a box on its bottom other than placing on a shelf, and there are lots of times when you'd want this in a decoration game; such as displaying it on its own shelf cover-out. -Every carpet is hideous lol -Problems with how games are displayed 1) BoxRoom seems to miss how many hours I have in a lot of my games. Just says 0 hours, for stuff I know I have way more. 2) BoxRoom sorts genre's weirdly. 80% of my games seem to be given the action genre and sometimes it very much is not an action game lol. So I hope you don't wanna sort by genre cuz they're all going in the action shelf lol. 3) Some games are just missing. I think I heard them say it was happening with some free games. One of my favorite games is called Haven and Hearth. Well Boxroom says no to H&H. -Two bugs exist that lose your progress; 1) If you have a big library the game loads faster than the cover arts, so half the game covers are just gone. You can create a dud file, load that, then load the first one again to fix this, but it probably shouldn't occur at all preferably. 2) I loaded in my boxroom after my initial playtime and many, many games were just straight up missing from the shelves. Back in the packing boxes. Seemingly at random. They still had their assigned poster frames so I know it passed my hands. Like Ashen. I know I sorted Ashen, I put it in 1st place on my "Worst Games I've Ever Played" shelf, but there it was back in the sorting box. Kinda unacceptable for a big sorting project game like this. This is the reason I stopped trying to organize my library, and the reason I'm not coming back til it's fixed, and the reason I'd be leaving a negative review if all the actual negative reviews weren't hot nonsense. -There is just a whole slew of discomfort with the building tools 1) Sometimes I try and rotate with the mousewheel as its a feature in some sims I play; this brings up the tool wheel, the object I was placing disappears, and you have to wiggle the wheel back into the right place to get it to show back up. 2) There are phantom invalid placements. Like a lot. Nothing's there, game says nah nah you can't put that there think of the dustmite's feelings that's his turf. This is the type of game that should just let me place it wherever I want, if it's clipping idc it's my room it doesn't effect anyone but me it doesn't unbalance the game just lemme clip all I want to!!! Let us hold a button to ignore this red ghost placement plz. 3) You're not allowed to place anything but games on the shelves and there are plenty of times I would like to use something to fill the shelf space. like the boombox. Or an amogus 4) Some shelves are very much not flush against the wall and the precise placement tool to do so has no microgrid and everything gets wonky REAL fast. 5) Some items, shelves especially, the black metal shelves especially especially, don't like being placed next to items without first being moved inside the hitbox of that item then out again. -Things I'd like to see 1) Shape tools. Let us use primitive shapes to build our own stuff, maybe even our own shelves. Workshop functionality on this one, please. 2) Model importing. Voices of the void's got model importing. I wanna put game models on shelves. 3) Modern furniture, I know the game's trying to capture the 90s aesthetic but they didn't have cyberpunk 2077 in the 90s, lemme put a flatscreen on the wall lol 4) Custom text. 5) Naming shelves, or some kind of signage 6) Add a toilet, preferably with a slot for a game, so I can put Ashen in the toilet where it belongs. But despite all this, the negative reviews here are kinda frustrating; you can't blame the sporting event for the rain, just like you can't blame them for a lack of a feature they literally had working and was forced to axe. Devs have said they're hopeful steam reconsiders one day and I agree, I hope so too, this game is too unique an idea to get downvoted for beaurocracy both unwanted and non-negotiable by the devs. I love the idea of this game, it's cheap, it's charming, it's pure nostalgia fumes going through my old games, and if some of these issues are fixed I'm coming back later for sure. But losing half my progress, with no promise that wasn't gonna happen again later, was a bit of a kick in the butt lol But big ups for the caves of qud mushroom I can place, i love caves of qud mushroom.
