Avoid. The reels retrieval rate is horrible, which means that in order to keep the lure from hitting the bottom, you have to increase retrieval rate or straight retrieve lures that don't work when doing so, so the bite rate is horrible. And good luck using this for actual bass, they'll get the line loose by jumping and running around and you can never get it tight again due to how slow the reel is. The Fishcabin is the only worthwhile thing about this, but not worth the price alone.

Cool rod really but i would suggest this to a level 14 and up player. not a level 1 and just because of the weight limit on rod . Since there is low weight fish in the first lake a 17pound rod will penalize you on XP big time..

I like this Sport Casting Bass Pack. The supplied rod and reel are exceptionally good for jigging. The rod is very sensitive to bites, being long (8'6") with fast action (meaning that it bends and straightens out quickly near the rod tip). The reel has one of the slowest retrieve speeds I have used at 21.5" per handle crank, which works really well for delicate jig presentations. The rod's long length can help compensate for the slow reel speed; when retrieving a jig near the bottom, elevate the rod tip while reeling in to help the jig get up off the bottom for a slow wobbling retrieve or to start a lift and drop technique. This is a well-balanced outfit for fishing bass, and I am actually catching crappie on it, although there is a experience penalty because the tackle is so heavy, and I can't cast quite as far when using light multi-purpose jigs (the supplied bass jigs have a 1 ounce or 1.5 ounce weight, which is quite large, but NOTE THAT 1.5 ounces is max weight for this rod, so do not try to put 2 ounce bass jigs on it OR try to attach a soft plastic trailer to the 1.5 ounce jig or you will risk rod breakage). This is a fantastic rod and reel! I think that I will complement this outfit with a short rod and a quick-retrieve reel in order to cover all bases when jigging (some jig retrieves work better with a reel that can pick up slack more quickly, like those that involve jerking the rod to pull the lure through the water). Note that when using the supplied 10 pound test braid, you will need to calculate drag settings as shown below: 15.4 pound max drag / 6 drag settings = 2.6 pound decrease per notch removed on drag circle, 15.4-2.6x=10, 2.6x=5.4, x=2.1, have to round up, so reduce the drag to a half circle (setting 3) when using the 10 pound braid to set the drag to activate at 7.7 pounds of tension (this is obviously not an ideal drag setting for this line because it does not make good use of the braid strength, so I recommend using the other line, a 15 pound test fluorocarbon, that the DLC provides instead, which you can use with the drag set at setting 5 out of 6) In the long term, it will be best to replace the supplied line with a 13 pound Pro braid, because the reel is relatively low capacity (2000 rating), and it fills up quickly with the 15 pound fluoro due to the line's larger diameter.
