Battle Riders Positives: + ok graphics + cool cars + parts and weapons upgrades + ok sound and music + ok handling + you get to blow shit up + almost bugfree Negatives: - gets boring after an hour of play - the cars feel exactly the same to drive - narrow and very boring tracks (acceptable in 1997, not in 2017) - very repetitive and monotonous, doing the same thing over and over - 18 tracks feels more like 3 different tracks (not exiting at all) - every mode feels the same, almost no variation at all - way to long and boring campaign and challenge series (10 -15 hours) Total Score: 4/10

This is a first impressions write up due to not having played enough for an actual review. The main point I want to make is that it works on the Steam Deck. I couldn't get the controller to work in the menu screens, so I had to use my bluetooth mouse; however, I did not try adjusting the controls, so it may be possible. It feels and looks like a PS1, N64 era car combat game(though with higher res). So, if you're looking for a cheap game in that genre that does not take up much storage space, then this game will scratch that itch for a few minutes here and there. Gas Guzzlers Extreme is still my favorite by far.

This is that game you would see in the store for like $2 that you begged your parents to get for you and then you were disappointed when you played it when you got home. Anyway I guess the game's alright for being 1 dollar, I don't want to sound too mean though but it's kinda fun I guess, I just wish there was local and online/lan multiplayer and more stuff in the game.

Battle Rider not a bad game for the money ok graphics looks quiet nice on 4k tv plays well. If you like a bit of easy racing there is a good few hours of fun to be had with this game. Handling and feel are good but basic always fun though multiplayer would be a great addition.

Good simple murderous fun. Small but enjoyable selection of weapons. Tracks aren't too challenging but when you're busy killing things that's not a bad thing. I look forward to finishing all the achievements to this game.

Graphically; it's how you remember PS1 games looking, mechanically; it's how you remember PS1 games playing. If, however, you don't remember those things, then this game is probably not going to appeal to you. It's perhaps a little grindy, and the scenery becomes a little repetitive over time, but otherwise it's a fun little callback to fifth-gen games. Also it's crazy cheap.

German poet Hanns Johst once said: “When I hear the word culture, I reach for my gun”. That's exactly how I feel when I see that UNITY engine startup picture. The one that offers you to choose resolution and picture quality. I see it – I'm starting to expect the worst. Surprisingly, this time it isn't the worst. Not even close. Even though this game was made by a single guy – Valentin Ciampuru, with soundtrack by Kevin MacLeod, it turned out to be a very solid product. I mean, come on. We've all seen a lot of cheap indie racing games on UNITY. Most of those are complete crap, very close to scam. You buy those – you feel robbed. But this game? It's a real deal. Don't expect much, though. Battle Riders is a very basic game. You win races – you unlock the new cars and buy upgrades. Most of the time you'll be able to shoot your enemies to make your life easier (the amount of ammo is very limited), but there's quite a lot of different conditions too. For example, some races won't allow guns, the others will eliminate the last car every lap, etc. That's the best thing about this game – even though it's very basic, Mr. Ciampuru actually wanted to make a proper game. The amount of different conditions makes it clear that the man didn't aim for some quick money. Which is rare among UNITY users. Aside from career (no story here, though, sorry), there are also challenges and basic quick races. That's it, though. There's nothing else. The physics are very simple, the tracks are dull and uninspiring, the amount of cars to unlock is small, and all in all, there's nothing special here. For example, even though Sledgehammer (AKA Gear Grinder) was pretty clunky, it gave you more motivation thanks to the story and other stuff. Battle Riders? It feels more like a mobile game. Pretty solid one. But still. See, it's a little to basic to care. If you'll buy it on sale for about a buck and decide to play it for an hour, or two? Battle Riders will totally deliver you some good time. It feels solid enough to do that. But if you're looking for a game to play for days... That's where this game sucks. It's just too dull and too basic to waste hours on repetitive grinding. It's one of those games that you'll uninstall right after trying them for your first time. Just because an hour, or two are more than enough to get everything that this game can offer. But at least it's a real deal and you won't feel fooled again.

Developed/Published by OneManTeam Fun vehicular combat game. EVENTS Duel, Battle Race, Survival, Elimination, Clean Race and Time Trial. CAREER MODE While there are multiple modes, I mainly play in Career Mode. You start off with a tutorial, and then it's off to the tiers. Each tier is made up of several events (see above). There are several courses, however some events will have you competing with the track reversed. You must win an event to unlock additional events, although it's usually possible to skip one and come back to it. POINTS In Battle Race and Clean Race you must place (1st, 2nd, 3rd) to earn points for finishing, although you also get points each time you destroy an opponent and whenever you drive over the Green power-up without damage. The Green power-up repairs damage. Blue power-ups are instant nitros. Yellow power-ups rearm your weapons. UPGRADES Engine. Armor. Left Weapon. Right Weapon. The weapons are Machinegun, Missiles, Mines, EMP and Raygun. Left Weapon mapped to A button on a controller, and the Right Weapon to the B button. STRANGE OPTION I'm well use to being given the option to choose between AUTO and MANUAL transmissions, but this game doesn't offer that option. Instead you can turn AUTO ACCELERATION ON or OFF. I race with it OFF. You can also choose between MPH or KPH. CONTROLS Very tight and responsive. Left Trigger - Reverse Right Trigger - Acceleration A Button - Left Weapon B Button - Right Weapon D Pad and Control Stick - Steering NEGATIVES Aren't many. Firstly you can't choose a manual transmission. And when a race is over the 'replay' is generic. That is it only shows your car going around the track and bares no relationship to what you actually did in the race.. I wish it were an actual replay. My preference for weapons are the Missiles. They're guided. The Lasers are more powerful the closer you are to whomever it is your trying to take out, but they're hard to aim, especially when there are a lot of curves. EMP is only effective when your opponents are close by. POSITIVES I like that you can go back and race in, say, a Tier 1 event with a car you've unlocked in a higher Tier, however the weapons have tiers as well. For example Tier 1 Missiles give you one shot per power-up reload. Tier 2 two shots. Tier 3 three shots. The same applies to your engine and armor upgrades. You can mix and match your weapons anyway you wish. I prefer Missiles on both sides. As the A and B buttons on a controller are close together this allows me to fire two missile at the same time if I wish. CONCLUSION Above average for the price. Recommended.

If you value your money, spend a bit more and get Gas Guzzlers Extreme. This game is awful. The only reason it's so cheap is because it feels as a Mobile Phone port to PC (i'm not surprised if it actually is.) This game feels very claustrophobic, and has a ton of issues and stuff that should plain simple work. - Maps aren't open at all, you feel very enclosed - The AI sucks, I don't feel challenged for a second - The driving is just bad, the physics suck, even for a mobile game - UI, doesn't support controllers, the way of choosing colors and stickers should be a drop down sort of menu, not a previous/next one. - The Cars get very uninteresting very quickly, you don't have a lot of actual diferentiation for them And a lot more that I can't even remember right now. I'll keep playing it for a while and try to get all the achievements (I'm an achievement hunter) but so far, I won't recommend this game to anyone, Gas Guzzlers is a lot more fun. If my opinion ever changes, I'll let you guys know. If this game was on my phone it would be passable.

I love combat racing games and this one is a fun and cool combat racing game with original design, nice graphics, good gameplay and music. It gets even better - more frantic and reckless - once you unlock faster cars and higher weapons! Over the last couple of years, it seems that this genre of games, with a few exceptions, almost completely migrated on mobile. I honestly don't care if it was originally a mobile game, mainly because it's a good ps port, but also the shortage of such games on PC is rampant. I'll say this - after having played this and Cyberline racing (both solid games on PC) - Start making good PC ports of mobile combat racing games and bring them on steam, we need them! :D The only gripe I had with the game was, that I couldn't fire both weapons and steer at the same time, a keyboard ghosting problem, but after posting my issue on the discussion forums the developer told me not to use ctrl and alt keys for left and right weapons, and that is exactly what I had set. So I changed them back to left weapon z or y key (y in my case because I have an QWERTZ keyboard) and right weapon x. This fixed the problem completely. Update: after finishing the game my thoughts are, well, it gets boring when it starts to feel repetitive and almost like a chore. But after all it was made by one man, so props to that.
