As other reviewers note, this film consists mostly of one guy droning endlessly (over an endless loop of really bad music) about how tough he's had it in the industry. He's not funny or charismatic, his stories are generic and dull (I had to sleep on my buddy's couch!), and nothing of actual interest is conveyed. There are a couple of interesting interviews with other devs, but they comprise about 20% of the running time, and it's really not worth sitting through Mr. Self Pity to get to them. There are some great docs on the industry, but this is not one. Avoid it.

The editing felt rough. Most of the content is one person droning on about problems that don't feel relatable. "I had to crash my friend's office and sleep on the couch for months. There wasn't even a shower so I had to borrow his gym membership which I could only do twice a week. After several months of this, we had a falling out and I had to find another living situation." Yikes.

I really wanted to like this... Some of the guests interviewed had great stories but 80% of the movie seemed to revolve around one guy who's story was so over the top and at times almost a little cringeworthy. I feel for the guy, i'm sure he's had it tough, i just don't know why more than 10 minutes was spent on him, it becomes really opinionated rather than informative... even in the avertising you mention Rami and Kellee, then shine the spotlight elsewhere, why? Representation was quite poor. Movies like "Indie Game: The Movie" had much more balanced speakers and "Game Loading: Rise of the Indies" was far more diverse and inclusive. It also lacks a clear direction, what is the underlying story that this is telling? other than "Indie games aren't easy" which is a story told many times before. 4/10 - wish i could rate it higher... kudos to the amazing people who were part of the project, this is a reflection of the project, not you.

I love the interviews, and having personally spoken to a few of the developers featured I think they were portrayed very accurately. HOWEVER the editing of this thing is... kind of terrible? Everything involving the Super Combat Fighter development felt really stretched to fill time. I would have liked to hear more testimonials from either Jay or Kellee. The music sounded more or less like it was ripped from stock and poorly editted to fit the cuts... audio levels jumped a few times, I found myself nursing the volume knob throughout.... the content of the movie is fine and definitely carries some lessons for wannabe devs (like myself) but the craftsmanship of the film itself isn't nearly to the level of other films like IGTM (which this film is admittingly inspired by). I got it for cheap, but when it's not for sale I say rent it. Worth watching once.

This documentary is misleading. The title art and trailer will lead you to think that prominent indie devs will share knowledge about failing with you that you haven't heard before. The reality is that it's mainly about the Director of the film trying to shill his project and tell his sob story about being a 'real' indie dev. A couple of the indie devs make awful life decisions. Needing to get your creativity out at the expense of your life is a first world problem. The reason the director never found a job and also never finished a game are directly related. Game dev is a hobby until it isn't. Get a job and balance your life. DON'T SLEEP ON YOUR FRIEND'S COUCH (for too long...)

I agree with the other reviewers. It is basically just an overlong movie (with repetitive music) about the struggle of one guy, trying to make a video game. This could have been interesting, but the way he tells his story is just not convincing or entertaining at all. Skip this one and watch 'Indie Game - The movie' instead.

Overall, all the comments I read about this are legit. If you're looking for something like "IIndie Games the movie", you'll be disapointed. To go straight to the point: + Unusual way to picture what game dev can be (most of the american documentaries about the subject are work_hard_get_successfull_you_will_be_rich). As it's a more realistic way to describe reality, it might not fit for those who just want to have a happy ending. + Feels honest - Edit is a mess. Interviews could be shortened (not because it was not interesting, but to avoid repetitions) - Music is really bad. You can even hear when the loop ends and when it starts again and again and again for like 10 minutes, with the same 1 minute loop. Aweful. It's a shame. - I wanted to see more of the work of these people. Worth seeing I guess, just pick up what's interesting in all this, even if it's not perfect.

Other reviewers nailed it on the head as to the issues with this movies. Dreadfully long and boring. There are a few interesting interviews, but they are far and few between long segments of moaning and whining about how making games is hard and how being an artist is a difficult road and blah blah cliche blah blah blah.

Absolutely infuriatingly self indulgent. The main story followed is a guy making a fighter game who talks about how he has no money, sleeping on friends couches and yet the film constantly shows all the Starbucks and energy drinks he's consumed during the day. He, and half of the interviewees come across really moany and miserable because of how the interviews are structured and cut between. There's some interesting bits about game development and knowing the challenges but this could all be put into an hour of structured advice and planning. All the juicy stuff is squarely aimed at wannabe devs looking for morale but outside that, it's a fairly dull affair. The music is repetitive. The sound changes volume dramatically per interview. Everyone looks out to horizons way to often. It's a complete miss. Drinking Game : "It's so hard being an indie!!!!" Bottom Line : Indie game documentaries need to understand that 90 minutes of someone saying "Its really hard" and cutting to shots of them drinking coffee hunched over a laptop does not make an engaging or sympathetic experience. Awful.

I couldn't finish this. It does feature several indie developers but it feels like 60% of the time it's the creator whinging about hardships to sad music and at the same time trying to get sympathy for his game. Very, very little is actually said about "what it means to be indie and what it means to be a creative". It's more like a very long youtube vlog with sad music. You could easily compress the 1 hour I saw to 10 minutes without losing any information. The creator repeats himself incessantly throughout.
