It's a walking sim with light puzzles and an RPG style trait system. 4 different endings depending on your play style and choices. An original story not based on the "Call of Cthulu" short story by Lovecraft, it features many elements from his works. Not scary but carries a creepy vibe throughout.

I LOVE this game. On console it plays great. On PC, however, it crashes immediately - every f'n time. I have tried every suggestion to get it to run. My PC is less than a year old and top of the line in every way due to my job. Still, this game crashes like my Aunt Trudy every single time she got behind the wheel to drive to the liquor store for a fill-up.

Having said that, I finally got a chance to play this one and found it very enjoyable with some amazing sights. Nevertheless I would consider the game quite linear with more of an illusion of choice in many places.
Story:
The game takes place with the protagonist, Pierce, going to the mysterious island of Blackwater to find the truth behind the death of a young woman and her family.
It progresses as Pierce uncovers the truth and is led down a path that very much touches on several elements of what one may expect from the author's works.
Characters:
Several characters are tolerable, with some... (Cat) being absolutely unbearable.
(When the point came that I knew I was going to be given an objective by a dying bootlegger to save her, I walked past him and let him die, and ended up giving the medkit to someone else. Fantastic game design 10/10. Thank you for not making me do it.)
Some of the other characters are added in in a slightly disjointed way, by which you can't really get why you're attached to these people, other than the story has to progress that way.
Gameplay:
The RPG elements are slightly tacked on. Increase Strength, Investigation and whatever else, however the changes to the differences in gameplay seemed to be rather aerial.
Tributes to sources material:
The first line of this review was a lie. The French devs clearly wanted to do Lovecraft justice by keeping the elements in without abusing it. Most notably the concept of the unreliable protagonist where it isn't clear whether what he is seeing or doing, or even what he has previously experienced actually happened or not, with it left open to what extent it is being hallucinated. Or maybe not at all?
Great job and its heartening to know that the French are among those that have kept Lovecraft's works dear. Love you guys.

Great game with great story, really pulls you in the Lovecraftian themes. Adapting my favourite works from Lovecraft. The gameplay could be better, but the game looks amazing with a great story. Just short for my taste. Endings could be better
Would recommend

Good Cthulhu story, meh game. Short, feels rushed towards the end, and it feels like a lot of loose ends were left open, otherwise it's a fun ride. I'd recommend it for fans of the genre if you can get it on sale.

After chapter 5 the game becomes extremely infuriating. Bad stealth, with bad checkpoints.

Despite its justified flaws, "Call of Cthulhu" is still a worthwhile product that offers a concise Lovecraftian experience!
It is a interactive adventure walking simulator that amateurishly tries to conceal itself as a sorta RPG.
The developers are a double-A studio and have fully embraced a stretched-thin and unpolished approach to making games.
While the gameplay is trying poorly to imitate the aspects of the 1981 tabletop RPG, nonetheless, the story, exploration and atmosphere are done exceptionally well.
The game has superb sound design and good music. The voice acting was great too.
The character animations were clunky but that again comes back to the unpolished nature of the game.
The skills were horribly designed and this 10h short game depended too much on dice roll.
There are many Lovecraftian games but very few that actually translate the mythos and feel, especially of the tabletop game. A game like "Call of Cthulhu" needs to exist, someone needs to deliver the standard experience!

This game is leagues better than that fake-out "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth" which actually has nothing to do with Cthulhu (despite its name) and instead gives us the beaten "The Shadow over Innsmouth" story with another eldritch being called Dagon. Despite it being a buggy mess, at least it had puzzles, unlike this walking sim.

"Call of Cthulhu (2018)" is also compared to "Sinking City (2019)" because both are Lovecraftian and came out almost at the same time. Sinking City is an actual action game, while Call of Cthulhu only has a short and pathetic FPS segment closer to the end of the game that is not brought up again. Once again masking the game's unpolished design.
The developers:
This game was made by French AA developers Cyanide Studio who are known for their unpolished products.
Their mistake is that they stretch themselves thin trying to make many games at once and can't produce a single satisfyingly completed product! They are best known for their "Styx: Master of Shadows" series, which to this day was their peak.
Despite that, the world needs developers like them, they fill a certain niche. Just sit quietly and churn out games.
Cyanide Studio's publisher "Nacon" is known for messing up and it shows in their recent games: the pathetic greed in "Blood Bowl 3" or one of the worst games in gaming history "Werewolf" The Apocalypse - Earthblood".
Thank Cthulhu, this game was developed and came out before the buy-out! (It could have been much worse.)
Overall, French game developers clearly are struggling to find the right balance between making a quality product or selling out.
Arkane Studios who made "Dishonored" shriveled and made "Redfall", ew.
I won't even start with the abominably flaccid Ubisoft and their pathetic fall.
Dontnod who made "Life Is Strange" are surprisingly doing well by switching genres to make "Jusant" and "Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden".
Cyanide Studios could be compared to another double-A studio 'Spiders' that made "Greedfall" and "Steelrising". But while Spiders make flawed games as well, they do not stretch themselves thin like Cyanide. Their polish makes their games at least appear competent.
"Call of Cthulhu" could have been so much better if the developers put more effort into it instead of wholeheartedly embracing their AA nature. There is no point being so proud of mediocrity.
But despite all that, they still managed to pull it off with this game and gave us a good enough of a time.
Worth it, especially on constant sale for $4.
