This is a fun experience for those looking for some potentially quicker rounds of a survivors-like game. Because you pick your weapons and passives at the start of a run, there's a lot more thought to put into the best level-up options that benefit the form you choose the most. Also, the story, light as it appears to be at the start, seems to imply things about your character that you don't have a means of knowing yourself, so there's a light story hook of trying to figure out who you actually are (or if that's even possible to learn).

I don't leave reviews before completing a game often but I'm making an exception for Wanted Shadows Unchained considering how it doesn't have many reviews and it deserves more attention. The game can be best seen as a bite sized Vampire Survivor both in terms of content and length of each run. You can play with 10 characters, have 5 different melee/ranged weapons, 14 passive skills, 8 locations and 10 difficulty levels called ascensions. All of this content is unlocked over time by completing runs and using currency earned based on how you perform in a run, even when you lose. The 10 characters also come with unique skills or advantages, so you can create some interesting combinations and play styles.
The game is great about cutting out the fat. It doesn't feel like there is bloat or quantity for quantity's sake. What you unlock does add to the game and it makes you consider all options. The game is also great about giving you options to decide how long a run can get. You have 8 locations and each location has a different time to complete instead of the default 30 minutes. The times range from 2.5 to 10 minutes you can see in the menu selection before starting a run. The game is excellent about getting you started right away. When you launch the game, you instantly start in a hub. There is no load screen or logos and it feels so awesome. What the game does best is the addictive progression system tied to the achievements and challenge. Each achievement unlocked makes you stronger in some way, think of more max HP, more shields, hitting harder etc. This encourages you to unlock them and become more powerful to handle higher ascensions. Each ascension level makes one aspect more difficult like normal enemies having more health etc. The increase in difficulty is gradual and within reach, especially with the upgrades. I wish more games tied achievements to getting stronger, it's such a good idea.
In terms of cons, I am limited in covering long term problems since I'm still playing the game and I'm not done with it. Right now I'm potentially worried about 1 achievement that might be too grindy, namely picking up 2000 upgrades. It feels like this could be the last achievement and it might take too long compared to the rest of the achievements. I'm sitting at over 500 at the moment while spending 4.6 hours, I'm not sure how long it's going to take to get the rest of the achievements but I will monitor the situation and will let the developer know if some of the achievements are too grindy. I also feel that the temporary skills (can be selected during a run) related to increased attack rate is misleading. When you think of attack rate, you think of attacking quicker. What I noticed instead is all your stamina being depleted to use multiple attacks with one hit. This is dangerous as dashing also needs stamina and you can't avoid attacks when you're out of stamina. This can put you at a huge disadvantage and it can be a detriment instead of an upgrade. I'm not sure it's intentional.
I'm having a blast with the game. It's the perfect turn your brain off game and I love that it's bite sized. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a Vampire Survivor like game that doesn't devoir your time. You can play it perfectly between other games and it's not an 80+ hour behemoth if you want to get all the achievements. My estimation is very rough at the moment, but I think it might take between 8-15 hours to unlock everything. I will update this estimate once I complete the game 100%. I also want to give a big shout out to the developer, he has been excellent with responding on steam forums and updating the game within hours after gamers point something out.
Edit:
The achievement for getting 2000 upgrades is indeed too grindy. After 8 hours, you have 3 achievements left: get 2000 upgrades, complete 50 runs and start 100 runs. The complete 50 runs was achieved at 11.7 hours. I had to do about 9 more runs and a total of 13.8 hours to get the 2000 upgrades achievement. Roughly 6 hours extra to get this one achievement. I've made a topic about it and informed the developer but the topic has been ignored with no replies.
