Excellent, brilliantlly well made mod. My only complaint is that they didn't fix the only thing that ruined the older Deus Ex experience - the lack of autosaving! If they actually add it in a patch, I'll be able to finish the mod and do an actual review. Up until now, it's 8.9/10.

Oh dear. I first played this I think in 2000. Despite what some other reviews claim, the graphics were not known for being cutting edge at the time, in fact the poor quality of the character models was often commented on in online reviews. I played this game here and there over and over probably for a year and a half and again in 2005-6. Unfortunately I do have to agree age has finally caught up with it, and me. What I found probably tolerable in 2001 Is now absolutely tedious. The weaponry and the combat is generally terrible, you can line up a guard with a headshot using the pistol, and you are better off doing that than using the Assault rifle. The storyline and the multiple ways to finish the game are still enjoyable but the actual gameplay itself feels like a stinker now in 2017.

Ugly but so satisfying! How did I ever miss this gem. Loved newer Desu Ex games but this one is a must as well.

Is it good? Sure! It does make some changes that might tick off long-time fans, but the visuals and re-designed levels are very impressively done. For a revision of Deus Ex, it does well on those fronts. However, Deus Ex has NOT aged well. The AI is very stiff (you can kill a guard with a non-silenced gun in an area full of guards, and they'll only notice once they walk by the dead body), and many of the mechanics that wowed back then don't work too well nowadays. This said, it's worth a try if you've never played DE before, or even if you have. Deus Ex, in my opinion, needs to get the treatment the original Half Life got with Black Mesa, albeit with more changes than the visuals.

If you already played on Deus Ex GOTY and you enjoyed it, this mod is for you. I would recommend to play the first Deus Ex before playing this one. This mod include : new textures, mods inside a mod (shifter/biomod), new places, glitches fixes, and more! 10/10 for a remake.

A very nice remaster of the original game, though the GMDX mod is a solid, direct competitor to this. Best to play at night, of course!

Perhaps the best way for new players to experience the game. Updated graphics, bug fixes and a new soundtrack, this is the ultimate way to play Deus Ex in 2017. It stays true to the original by not changing any of the core gameplay mechanics or story. I recommend only using the HD models for objects and weapons, and keeping the main characters and NPCs with their original models because some of them look really weird (Paul Denton for example). I've only encountered a small handful of bugs which were all quite minor. Besides that, the only other dislike I have for this game is that it isn't very well optimized. Some areas, which featured a lot of complex lighting or a lot of NPCs all in one area, caused my frames to dip down to about 30-40 for a few seconds, This isn't entirely bad, but I wish it would run more smoothly. Overall, I recommend this to new players of the game.
Misses a few high notes, but otherwise a very comprehensive, enjoyable, and rewarding experience.
For every target hit, this game misses one – as part of a recurring pattern that increases as you continue. (parts of this review, such as the Music and Graphics section, were omitted. ran out of space!) When it was announced on moddb that Deus Ex would be "revised" (as part of the mod's moniker, Revision) and released as a standalone game, I was ecstatic. No other games in release purgatory could possibly rouse me to the point that Deus Ex: Revision did. Scrutinizing screenshots led me to believe that this would be one of the most ambitious modifications ever created, only rivalled by a select few on its scale – and it was only then that a quiet sense of cautious cynicism grasped me. Reality began to set in; Caustic Creative, a skeleton crew of only 8 people, looked upon themselves as the deliverers of an (almost) entirely new experience -- one of which that could not be taken lightly -- as the careful painstaking ingenuity and design of the original game remained to be, albeit subjectively, unparalleled to this day. Deus Ex: Revision almost manages to accomplish a feat that not very many game modifications or overhauls manage to reach; the likes of Black Mesa which remained in development limbo for years on end are among a humble lineup of modifications that achieved their goals of reimagining their predecessors. As a result of the sheer ambition, and the nigh unimaginable scope of this modification, paired with a hopeful team of about half a dozen, this mod is not one you should have excessively high expectations for. In fact, keep your mind open, for the peaks and valleys you may encounter during gameplay may also provide you with a sense of variety. Revision is a tapestry of brilliant and mediocre design decisions. The ingenuity and developmental finesse isn't something I'll undermine in this review -- and despite there being an outstanding amount of negatives, there still remains to be a plethora of great things to ogle over. - Level Design... The map layouts, obviously the largest part about this game (and by the largest part, I mean it is the fucking game) are an amalgam of positive and negative. Let me elaborate: A sizable sum of the maps aren't entire overhauls, which defeats the overall moniker of "Revision". While this may seem like an excruciatingly close excuse to nitpick, it isn't -- because other levels within Revision stay true to its name, and truly are reimaginings of their original counterparts. How is this a bad thing? Because while there are levels that have an excessive amount of detail and design worked into them, there remain to be others that have that same bar of detail and prodigal design that have the detail worked around them instead. This causes a jarring lapse between the levels that pertain to these differing design choices, in the way that, upon loading in, you near immediately try to figure out if everything was left as it was (consistent with the original map designs), or if everything was changed. This is where the breathtaking amount of brilliance and painstaking design contrasts with the negatives: a lot of it feels and flows nicely, with a fair amount of backtracking, guide checking, and careful observation to go around, but in comparison, a lot of it falls flat -- with a less than acceptable amount of figuring out if they did a simple cut and paste job of the map's core design with revamped structural work, foliage, and greeble, in place of the aforementioned design principles. A lot of the time I felt I was loading in to immediately scrutinize lazy brushwork. A sizable amount of the questions I had asked myself were inclusive of things akin to "Where's [critical objective location]? Did they move it?" "Did they just fuck up the map instead of opt for a redesign?" "Why are there fucking trash bags everywhere?". That's where my experience fell flat. My expectations were too high, and I had to reason with myself that while the name may objectively promise an overall shift from everything the original Deus Ex was, it quickly becomes obvious that the burden the developers chose to seek reared its head at a moment that was least advantageous to their development cycle. Choosing to take on a reimagining of an already genius work is nearly infeasible. An ungodly amount of attempts to do so usually result in a dissonance between the intended artistic vision of the authors, and those that chose to undertake the task of doing so. A typical result, although hyperbolic, would be the Ecce Homo incident of 2012, when some 80 year old fucked up a Jesus painting. Except Revision really isn't that bad -- and when it comes to looking past its obvious flaws, it (mostly) remains to be casted upon the player to do so. Do away with your insurmountably high requirements for a satisfactory gameplay experience, given to you, in this case, as a curse by 2000's Deus Ex, and instead open your mind for a shift of pace and locales -- you will appreciate Revision's map design much more for it. Gameplay... The gameplay in Revision is largely tethered to the level design -- just like the original, so I'll keep this section brief. If you enjoyed the gameplay in the original, then you're going to enjoy the gameplay featured in the Revision modification. All features remain intact and largely unchanged, save for quite a few bug fixes and skillful programming to incorporate features that went missing in the final version of the previous installment (such as Ford Schick's return to Smuggler's Compound upon his rescue). Caustic Creative did a wonderful job in ensuring anything that was departed from the original game was seamlessly integrated into Revision. Continuing through, you can potentially hear a lot of new dialogue and character interactions. Caustic Creative even took the liberty to reintroduce a missing character from the final game (the woman on the gondola in the Canal section of Hong Kong, who was ostensibly omitted at the last minute). The game's difficulty, however, is not something I'm very happy about. In fact, I'm not going to free it from petty insults. I fucking hate it. Realistic difficulty is something out of a hellish fever dream, created by sadomasochists for sadomasochists. Enemies are able to hear you from insane distances -- see you from insane distances, and worst of all, are able to one shot-you with unbelievable accuracy. Their reflexes are practically hair-trigger, with MJ12 Commandos being capable of turning on a whim and simply raising their arms at you -- with that being the last thing you see before your emotionally devoid, countless death. Allow me to sum up Realistic difficulty in just a few words: If you play Realistic, you will die. Conclusion... Deus Ex: Revision is a modification that may potentially disappoint many of its long time Deus Ex fans. In lieu of setting the stage for being let down is a truth that players may need to lower their expectations and remain open-minded about their experiences and the game as a whole. Caustic Creative's many years of painstaking work has paid off, and its essential that you allow them to cater to your urge to play through the original game again. Revision will guide you through a splendid conjuration of a new but familiar experience -- but only if you allow it. As great of a game as 'Deus Ex' was (and still is), it did not age well. Thankfully, Caustic Creative put together 'Deus Ex: Revision' to give the original game a much-needed facelift. This mod (collection) includes high-resolution graphic textures, improved lighting, redesigned and expanded levels, new gameplay modes, bug fixes, and new soundtrack. Honestly, just the improved lighting alone makes the original 'Deus Ex' much more playable on modern day computers; everything else is icing on the cake. I highly recommend 'Revision' to anyone who wishes to replay 'Deus Ex' because just the graphic improvement alone is worth the (huge) download. Plus, this mod is endorsed by Square-Enix, making it as official as a mod can be. Still, note that not all of the bugs and glitches will be fixed by this mod. For example, stealth AI is still glitchy, with enemy detecting your presence inconsistently; and there is still a delay in tranquilizer darts taking effect, causing enemies to go into alert mode. However, considering how the modders and creators have spent years putting 'Revision' together, and then releasing it for our enjoyment and consumption for free, I say there really isn't much to complain about. Thank you, Caustic Creative, for your hard work and generosity! 'Revision' is truly a phenomenal mod!
