Religion and city states - good. Overdependence on 3d graphics - bad. The last of the "good" Civ games. Not as readily modable as Civ3, which is disappointing, but offering just enough interesting features to be worth playing. I go back to this in a way I have never EVER gone back to the later versions. 2nd best of the Civ games (after 3).

Civilization IV was my 'go to' game long before the current days of Steam. I used to own the disks. I played this game for hours upon hours. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to take a peak into nostalgia.

Unfortunately for me I can't play this game. After spending a few hours on a custom game it randomly crashed, fair enough, my own fault in a way for not regularly saving. I started a new game and made sure to save fairly often but it crashed again and now when I try to load that save game it just gives me an error stating "failed to uncompress...." so several hours of play down the toilet. Since I'm unable to play without crashing and unable to load prior save games I'm pretty annoyed at this as I'm past the refund window.
For further clarity - I haven't altered any files or have any mods, it's just the base game plus dlcs and that's it.

First of all, if you get this game, make sure you get the complete edition and install beyond the sword. CIV 4 is the first game to have expansions come out after the main release and said main release is pretty barebones. With beyond the sword, it's the most balanced game in the entire franchise.
