well its a okish spinoff of the first game. pretty much largely the same story in a different setting (and of course different gameplay). if you are familiar with the original there is little "new" story to discover. characters are still goofy and your everyday anime cliches. gameplaywise it starts very strong untill the moment you realize there is no reason to not bring your biggest ships in every mission. there is hardly any downside, since all missions give you infinite turns and the ai will always move torwards you, so you can simply park your "ships of the line" in a (you know) line and fire broadside after broadside. the enemy's ship of the line also wont engage you on the same ranges you can reliably engage them, so you get like 1-3 turns (depending on wind) of free braodsides before they actually return fire (in which case they are usually sunk or near sunk). also the variety is pretty luck luster since the setting doesnt realy allow much in terms of different wepanory. sure you get special weapons like the fire rockets, mortar or harpune, but those are hardly used (minus maybe the harpune for boarding) since its usually better to just use your cannons (round/chainshoot) and they dont run out of amo unlike special weapons. and now boarding: cool idea terrible basic execution. its basically turnbased rpg, but the ai is stupid as hell and abillitys have unecesarry restrictions and for the most part are never used, since your combat units take ages to fill their special bar and the units that fill the bar rather quick have mostly useless abillitys and you are better of just sloting 3 fighters and a healer anyways. then there is the problem of locking you into a bad end if you chose a specific route and did clear a sidemission to fast (yes you get punished for beeing to good) or you didnt clear it at all. anoying as hell since its near the end of the playthrough and you effectivly wasted alot of hours if you dont have an older save. then there is the new game + which sounds interesting but basically has the same problems as the normal game has: park ships in line and win. in new+ i had like 10ships instakilling anything in range (and i did play normal and ng+ on the highest difficulty) since you cant get the character endings untill you beat ng+ with all chars it adds unecesarry grind/ pats the playtime with then piss easy missions. even worse if you beat ng+ you cant simply do it again. you need a new save starting on normal and beat it again. now granted the game tells you to create a save at the end of normal to have easy access to ng+, but i dont see the point of not letting me play on ng++ with my original save file. so to 100% the game you effectively play the game 2-4x (depending if you softlock yourself into bad end) which is just terrible gamedesign. all in all good spinoff idea, but lacking in the gameplay mechanics departemnt and the enemy ai. missions get very repetative after a few fights 6.5/10
