The beauty of this game is what it was for it's time. It is challenging, interesting, and sometimes unpredictable. I really enjoyed seeing what started Fallout and learning what this game meant to those who created it.

This is a game you will either love or hate. To me, Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game has a ton of things that I REALLY love! But for every good thing it makes, it does something equally terrible. The presentation is brilliant, but it can also be difficult to interact with things because the isometric view or multiple objects in an area. The story and writing is some of the best in the franchise, but it can take a while before you meet characters that are interesting. The world building and the atmosphere is phenomenal, but can take forever to get from one place to the next even after you've gotten the water chip Probably the thing that makes this a mystery when it comes to reccomending this is the combat. I don't have a problem with the fact that it is turned based, I can handle it. But I can't handle it if some enemies can outright hit you from a mile away, when the game says I missed an enemy when I clearly did not or the one or two times where either you or your enemy can hit each other perfectly but don't deal a single bit of damage. It's understandable when it is a weaker enemy you fought in previous chapters, but when it's enemies stronger or similar to you, no excuse. Furthermore, a lot of the important information that you need to get in order to get an idea of the place you are on is far too easy to avoid. I mean I didn't know of the main antagonist origin until the end of the game! However, while these are legit problems to me, I don't want to make it sound like I dislike everything about gameplay because of my experience with the modern games like New Vegas or Fallout 4. The exploration is admittely fun as there are a ton of interesting locations to find and figuring out some of the puzzles or even entire quests by thinking outside of the box never sizes to surprise me. Also, when the combat works the way it's supposed to , it can be intesne and really fun. All in all, I would say that although Fallout 1 shows it's age in a lot of areas, it is something I would reccomend in case you are interested. I know it's not for everyone, what with the mechanics and graphics obviously, but it is captivating nonetheless.

Fallout is a marvel of great writing, fun quest and systems that go to great depths to allow for unique builds and characters to conquer this game. Which only makes it all the worst that this diamond is mired in bugs, tons of cut content that leaves hints of it being in the game (ie an entire quest related to a factions ending that you cannot play thus resulting in a bad ending unless you mod the content back in.) glitchy companions without proper commands making them worthless in the end game as well as no stat progression on their part (That I'm aware of) and a lack of options at select points and specific quests which stand out starkly in contrast to quest that have a laundry list of approaches. So Fallout is a good game, great even but it's troubled development leaves a lot to be desired. Whether or not fallout fixt actually redeems these downsides I do not know as I only learned of the mod once I hit 18 hours deep in my playthrough which I finally actually finished the game. Though it's still a shame the satire and mockery of Americana and corporate greed that occupied this genre would only wind up being what it would devolve into. (see fallout 76, 4, and the tv series which are all prime examples of the greed corrupting a fine piece of art) So yeah, play it, is good.

great game if you are super into fallout and other older RPG games. Definitely not the fallout game to start with but is a great one to play later down the line.

Played 27 hrs on steam deck, works great! Love the challenge, atmosphere, music and lore since I started w/ 3. Had to come to terms with the controls and graphics, but do not see them as a detriment. Quests can feel shallow w/out appreciable pay offs at times, but do not deter from the overall experience

Brutal combat, tense music, creepy ambience, unsettling looking characters, a world that looks like its been through a nuclear war THIS is what fallout is 100% recommend trying it out

An absolute classic that still holds up today. The sense of freedom, meaningful choices, and deep world-building made exploring the wasteland an incredible experience. I loved how every decision mattered—whether it was wiping out the Khans, influencing the future of the NCR, or deciding the fate of entire towns. The writing was sharp, the humor was dark, and the game really made me feel like I was shaping the world. The turn-based combat was surprisingly fun, especially with my Turbo Plasma Rifle and Power Armor, and watching enemies melt into a pile of goo never got old. The Cathedral and Military Base finales were intense, and escaping both explosions felt like the perfect way to wrap up the journey. Overall, Fallout 1 was an amazing experience, and I’m glad I finally played it. It’s easy to see why this game started such an iconic series. A must-play for any RPG fan.

Even as somebody who was introduced to Fallout through the 3D games, this game has quickly become one of my favorites. The main thing I love about Fallout 1 is that the game allows you to fail. If you mess up and treat the game like a low stakes sandbox where you just wander about and mess around, you will lose the game and your vault will perish. This sense of stakes makes the player act realistically, and quickly you'll find yourself role-playing without even knowing it. That is the magic of Fallout 1, the gentle hand of the games setting which forces you to adapt. 9/10
