~~Bought Jamestown+ after owning Jamestown and I regret it. Can't enjoy the actual game because of all the bugs. Took over an hour to find the bugs so can't get a refund.~~
Tough to recommend a game that requires updating compatibility mode but that seems to be what fixed my issue. The new ships are enjoyable so, barring the bugs, it's worth.

Jamestown is a shmup that is *mostly* great- but falls short of being good enough to do more than a single play-through on due to a couple of (likely personal) issues. The artwork is great and the difficulty scaling works fairly well...up to the point where I find my first & biggest issue with the game: vaunting. This a defense/shield mechanic with a recharge that is (afaik) unique to this game. I cannot fucking stand this mechanic! After 30~ years of only shooting and bombing I really DO NOT want to learn how to adapt to timed shielding - especially in order to finish the game's campaign (around the last level playing w/o using vaunt requires too much effort or is possibly not feasible to otherwise do). Aside from vaunt, the only other problem I had was how much I disliked any weapon that wasn't the starting beam. If you're fine with vaunt and some lack-luster secondary weapons, Jonestown is a worthy scope if you can get it on sale.

Great little shmup. Full of charm, and the music is really good. I have the Conquistador and Croatoa themes on my permanent playlist. Punishingly hard on the higher difficulties but I had an absolute blast playing through with my friend and SO.

Jamestown goes far beyond what you'd expect from shoot 'em up lore, offering a very creative interplanetary steampunk setting. Unfortunately, that was the only thing that impressed me. The game does feature charming pixel art, some unlockable content and a few modes to add variety, but stages are too short, sound design is quite weak and the ship mechanics didn’t really grab me.
