Hexters is a story-driven RTS that takes place deep inside a computer. Apparently there has been one too many accidental bewerage container discharges on top of the computer since the tiny programs and the world running inside are in a complete disarray. You,as the User, are charged with traversing the bitscape through multiple levels to gather both the scattered programs and routines that keep your computer running, and the information of what actually led to the post-digicalyptic state of the machine. Unfortunately, you have to fight gnarly manifestations of bugs, glitches and stale memes not belonging in a healthy computer that inhibit your technological journey.
I've played a early accessversion that has first few levels. The first levels introduce you to the world and game concepts and it seems that there's a lot yet unrevealed. The enemies are yet scarce in the remote corners or the digiscape where you start so focus is more on exploration, completing tasks and clearing roadblocks while traveling corewards.
The graphics depict inhabitants of the computer in simplified flat-shaded 3d and together with the setting remind me of Darwinia. The programs guiding the player around have distinct characters brought to life with animation and clever dialog.
Music fits the theme nicely and I'm hoping more of it to give more variation later during the long missions.
Base building / economy of the game reminds me of Settlers and OxEye's Harvest, both with the worker Hexters that haul, build and fight, and the powergrid on a hex grid that you must maintain and balance to keep everything together.
What I'm hoping for this early access phase is that the developer, Draconus, creates a more acute focuses. Currently there are a lot of new concepts introduced in fast succession which overwhelmed me.
There's of course the other early access problems like bugs and missing info of what gameplay element does what, but I'm expecting them to be fixed before release.
The setting and storytelling by themselves are interesting enough for me want to play more of Hexters.

The game is extremely slow and laggy on OSX (iMac 2015 model with 10.12.6). Lowering resolution and switching to windowed mode doesn't really help. Looks fun but unplayable in current state. Maybe pass if you own a Mac.

This is a fun little game that as of this review is still in development for more maps past the 5th one. The banter with the "ai" programs as you complete the objectives for each one have a nice zest of comedy with them.
It runs very well and even when set to 1920x1080 whist having fullscreen disabled I am able to take advantage of my ultrawide using borderless gaming.
The response of the devs in regards to suggestions and reports is very satisfactory and I am more than happy to see the evolution of this game to its full state as well as possibaly check out any future projects they have in mind.

This game is not the usual clone of clones but has some fresh new ideas and captivating atmosphere. It's early access though so content is limited and a bit buggy.
+Lovely audio and graphics
+Your city looks awesome at night
+It's real time but you're not in a hurry so take your sweet time
+fun economy system
-quite a few bugs here and there
-sometimes hard to get hexters do your bidding
-tutorials are a bit patchy and can be hard to figure out what to do if you miss out just one message
-only 5 levels
Looking forward to more levels!

Darwinia meets Perimeter!
Sounded great to me!
It wasn't.
The game mechanics on their own weren't bad, if on the simple side.
But the fact they force you to continually be interrupted by the tutorial bots, who act like this:
"Well hey buddy! I think you need a refinery!"
"Well good job on building that refinery!"
"Well hey buddy, I think you need some more domiciles!"
"Well good job on building those domiciles"
I'd finished all the objectives already, so it just ended up with me mashing the space bar to get through the dialog.
Recommended for those who need their hands held while playing games.
For those of us who just want to be handed a pickaxe and constructor booklet then to be told: Break down that mountain, the tips are in the book, bye! Then this is not for you.

This review was based on the early access version that was available on 16th of January 2018.
Hexters is a real time strategy game with a side of humorous, slightly domestic comedy flavoured narration in the single player campaign.
Graphically it is an alright showing. No photorealism here, thematically this is a digital landscape inside a computer, so simple geometric shape combinations, bare polygons and glowing neon lights dominate the visuals. Still, the game seems heavy on memory and processor time.
Core gameplay is base building with resource management consisting of a three resources, that are first mined and then refined in increasing complexity. Reloading might come necessary if the scarce starting materials are wasted in poorly thought out projects. Saving often is recommended. Optimization of production chains becomes necessary further into the game, and generally saves on time spent building. Enemies are also introduced later with combat gameplay, so there isn't just serene building here.
The game is still in very early phase, but does give you few hours worth of playing (and waiting if you built poorly optimized base) currently. Seems enough worthwhile to wait on further developments.

Has potential, but lots more work needed
It's an early release, so much of these criticisms are to be expected, but it's definitely not ready for playing yet. Could well be worth a re-visit later, but had I known its limitations I wouldn't have bought it. At least not yet.
This is true Early Access material.
Good:
- Base building strategy game
- Huge maps
- Great potential
Bad:
- Laggy on OSX (2017 Macbook Pro, discrete GPU) on all but low settings
- Easy to run out of resources and get stuck unless you build in *exactly* the correct initial sequence
- Lmited freedom for base builds due to resource constraints
- Buggy AI for your minions ("Hexters") and resource-transportation in particular
- Limited content as of January 26th

Funny little strategy game spiced up with 80's style graphics, sounds, and music that take me right back into my childhood. This is game that offers a nice change of pace compared to other more intensive RTS-games, but since the game is still in early access and isn't quite finished yet, I can't tell if that'll change further into the game.
The only downside is that there are some bugs that I've encountered in the game, but nothing I couldn't solve by restarting the level. I have informed the developer of the two I've encountered so far.
